ADSL Problems - Ancient modem syncing, but new modem/routers won't.

Hi all-- haven't used this website in a while, feel free to move this topic if it's in the wrong place :)I'm currently trying to "fix" my parent's internet problems. They have a fairly old modem that started dropping (and making weird noises..) recently, and I assumed that it was probably about at the end of its life. The old modem will still sync-- it just stops working frequently (the power LED stays red, while DSL stays green). To try remedy this issue, I've tried a couple of new, modern , $250ish modem/routers.Neither of the two I've tried will sync. All of the settings are correct, and after 2 different modem/routers, I'm pretty convinced that it's sometime to do with the connection. Is it common that old hardware will sync with more troublesome connections, but newer stuff will find it hard? I don't have too much knowledge in this area. They live in a rural area, but aren't too far (1km or less) from their cabinet. I've made sure that everything else in the house is using an appropriate filter.I've included an image of one of the most recent times when the (possibly) dying modem would actually sync with connection details. My apologies if I've left out any relevant information, any help or advice would be much appreciated. I've been trying to get in touch with Snap (now 2degrees) to get someone out to look at the wiring (if that's a thing), but the woeful waits on their helpline is proving to be a bit of an issue...Any advice would be much appreciated.
