Guide: Mikrotik RB750Gr3 on UFB

This is a simple guide for the Mikrotik RB750Gr3 to get it up and running on common connection types across NZ. The goal here is to get an universal configuration that can run on the following connection types:

- DHCP (IPoE) with or without VLAN 10.- PPPoE with or without VLAN 10.

This makes the configuration suitable for most connection types (except in cases DHCP / PPPoE is not used) - should work out of the box for Spark / BigPipe / Orcon / Vodafone FibreX and require minimal configuration for other ISP's. A more advanced configuration guide is coming soon.

Universal Configuration:

Download Link - support for most NZ connection types. (need to sort out config)Advanced: Raw Configuration.Winbox Download Link: http://www.mikrotik.com/download/winbox.exe

Configuration:Router IP: 192.168.4.1/24DHCP Pool: 192.168.4.2-192.168.4.254Firewall: All inbound blocked, no UPnP (for security reasons)User / Pass: admin/blank (change this under System - Users)

Setting this up:

**IMPORTANT** ensure your router is in a factory reset state before starting. This configuration is only suitable for the Mikrotik RB750Gr3.

By default, your computer should get an IP in the 192.168.88.1/24 range. Open Winbox and connect to your router on 192.168.88.1 with the username admin (blank password).

Click on Files then Upload - select your configuration you've downloaded above:

Click Restore - select your backup and then click Restore:

The router will restore the backup and reboot (you'll need to renew the lease on your DHCP) - when it is rebooted connect it to your ONT and you're away (if you're on BigPipe, Spark, Orcon, Vodafone FibreX or potentially any other ISP that uses port based authentication.)

Other ISP's:

You'll need to edit your PPPoE credentials - go back into Winbox then go to Interfaces - you'll note the following:

Set the one that corresponds with your ISP - for example, if you're on 2degrees or Vodafone you'll want to edit the one with VLAN 10 - double-click on this then go to the Dial Out tab. You'll need to edit the username and password in here:

When you're done hit apply, wait a bit and you should have internet.

Potential Problems:

- Things like Vodafone TV won't work without additional configuration - I don't know what is involved here to test.- Some ISP's might do weird things and be listening on VLAN and also DHCP - I have a plan to mitigate this and will update the above config likely before anyone tries it.- I know some people don't use Windows - I normally don't. You can still follow 99% of this guide through the WebUI or Winbox runs nicely under Wine.

Where to grab a Mikrotik RB750Gr3:

GoWiFi were kind enough to send me one to play around with so it seems fair to purchase one from them. They're cheap, and great if you're wanting to learn Mikrotik RouterOS. Here is the link.

What about WiFi?

Go take a look at my router thread Here. It lists several WiFi options.

Performance?

I am able to route full Gigabit down / up without any issues and with only hitting 25% load. You're not going to have any issues on any connection type.
