Thompson TG585v8 and Wireless Printer

First I must disclose that I know next to nothing about home wi-fi networks. So be gentle.Purchased a new wireless printer which I have installed, but no computer or portable devices can see it through the wi-fi network. However I think this is a symptom of a wider network problem. Printer shows as connected to wi-fi and I can see it listed on the Thompson gateway interface. Computers are a Win 7 (64) and a Win 8 laptop, but no mobile devices including iPhone or iPad can detect it either. I have downloaded the Brother print apps which just come up 'no devices connected to network'Given the range of devices having issues I can't see how it could be a computer/operating system issue.I accept is may be a problem with the new printer but in the past I have also been unable to use a range of Apple apps which supposedly would allow me to access files on my computer, for example for streaming movies over wi-fi. I put this down to the older computer we had then but now I am thinking the modem is the common denominator in all this. In addition neither laptop can see the other (should they be able to?)Modem is unmodified from the Telecom supplied build including the firewall which is disabled. Software release is 8.2.7.7 Security is WPA-PSK (standard?) Before I launch into having to buy and set up a new modem/router...any suggestions? The modem otherwise works faultlessly. If I am in for a new modem/router, any suggestions? Thanks
