Home network Spark Huawei with LAN & Apple devices in bridge mode

$

Hi guys

I'm also commenting in the Spark Sport streaming thread about difficulties I'm having streaming Spark Sport

@oblivian suggests I seek help here re. set up.

What I have is ...

A large 320sqm double story old villa, heavy beams, thick walls, 3-layered (false ceiling, ceiling & floor) between up/down

A CAT06 LAN spreading through the house from a hub in the basement

Spark fibre to the house, coming in via one of the wires to a LAN hub, because although we designed the whole thing for a wire coming in underground, Chorus in their infinite wisdom brought it in above ground to the top of the 2 storey house

So the fibre comes in to the attic, down through one of our LAN ethernet cables to the hub, out to the modem, then back to the hub

Modem is Spark Huawei standard issue, creating the ethenet lan and 2 x wifi networks (5G and not)

an early Apple airport express in a room downstairs far away from the Huawei, ethernet connected to the LAN, operating in bridge mode

a recent Apple airport extreme upstairs, ethernet connected to the LAN, operating in bridge mode

on one TV, an old Apple TV(3), ethernet connected

on a 2nd TV, a brand new ChromeCast Ultra, ethernet connected directly from a LAN port on the Huawei modem

A near-new Windows 10 PC and an elderly (2014'ish) Apple iMac both ethernet connected to the LAN

numerous phones, laptops, tablets, Amazon Echo and God knows what else all using the wifi network(s)

Problems ...

1) DCHP problems from time to time, especially the iMac and the laptops (interestingly, very rarely if ever affecting the near-new Dell PC) ... resolution 90% of the time is achieved by reset DCHP menu on the iMac (or switch wifi network on the other devices)

2) Nightmares getting the CCu to cast ... this is my major hassle. Typical use case is to use an iPad on the non-5G wifi network (because it's in the immediate vicinity of the Huawei modem, and that modem emanates a rubbish 5G wifi signal). The CCu nightmares are variously ... black screen ... picture but no sound ... total loss of control of where in the stream we are if we do anything other than play and leave it alone (so pause, fwd, rew takes the devices out of sync, at times by hours in a stream)

Oblivian (here) reckons I've almost certainly got a badly designed network. I could do with some advice. I am not a techy BTW, so in plain English please.

Many thanks, Don

Netgear Nighthawk M2 / MR2100 Mobile Router in NZ

I am in need of a really good mobile 4G router/hotspot for use in NZ.

Needs to be super reliable and be capable of use for live streaming video over (up and down). It is being connected to by a MS surface using wifi or LAN.

Needs to be mobile i.e. battery powered or USB powered (not AC), and work with NZ Mobile network providers. Would be great if it supported multi SIM with bonding... but not essential.

I see this was launched in AU by Telstra - https://www.netgear.com.au/home/products/mobile-broadband/mobilerouters/M2.aspx

https://www.pcworld.co.nz/article/658367/mwc-2019-netgear-launch-m2-mobile-router-through-telstra/

Does anyone know if the Nighthawk M2 can be purchased in NZ? Would it work with any NZ mobile carriers?

Alternatively if anyone can recommend a device I should check out.

Thanks!

Unifi Secure Gateway Pro 4 - Issue with DHCP and Default gateway

$

Hi All,

Having some issues with a new-ish USG Pro 4. Changes made in the controller for DHCP and Default gateway is not being saved to router. I've contacted Unifi and they've simply told me they cannot reproduce the issue and closed my case, even though people are experiencing the same issue on their forums.

I did a quick check through ssh:admin@ubnt:~$ show configuration commands | grep dhcp-serverset service dhcp-server disabled falseset service dhcp-server hostfile-update disableset service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 authoritative disableset service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 subnet 192.168.1.0/24 lease 86400set service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 subnet 192.168.1.0/24 start 192.168.1.100 stop 192.168.1.253set service dhcp-server static-arp disableset service dhcp-server use-dnsmasq disableSo gateway and DNS server are not being advertised even though the details are in the controller under networks-> Lan-> Edit. I tried both manual and automatic configuration of dns and gateway, both will not update the USG settings. Also tried to re-adopt and nothing.Using the following:configure set service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 authoritative enable set service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 subnet 192.168.1.0/24 default-router 192.168.1.1 set service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 subnet 192.168.1.0/24 dns-server 192.168.1.1commit save exitNow the USG works as intended and shows the following:admin@ubnt:~$ show configuration commands | grep dhcp-serverset service dhcp-server disabled falseset service dhcp-server hostfile-update disableset service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 authoritative enableset service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 subnet 192.168.1.0/24 default-router 192.168.1.1set service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 subnet 192.168.1.0/24 dns-server 192.168.1.1set service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 subnet 192.168.1.0/24 lease 86400set service dhcp-server shared-network-name LAN_192.168.1.0-24 subnet 192.168.1.0/24 start 192.168.1.100 stop 192.168.1.253set service dhcp-server static-arp disableset service dhcp-server use-dnsmasq disable

So issue with this is that every time I make an update to something in the controller, the USG loses its settings and have to re-ssh and configure again. As Ubiquiti is being extremely unhelpful in the matter, is there anyway to make the changes persistent, without the possibility of having any issues later on when upgrading firmware and software?

Using ISP router for wifi print server

I need a wifi print server to allow printing to a brother laser printer (USB). I have a couple of ISP provided routers here, a Netcom NF4V and a Huawei HG659b. Has anyone managed to set one up to do this? I had a look but it seems that neither is compatible with Tomato or similar firmware.

Thoughts?

Can the HG659 be connected to another router?

Modem Drops Out Every Week Day

I have an HG659b provided by Spark.

Every week day I come home to find it has no internet connection. I turn it off and on and this solves the problem until the next day.

Never happens on weekends.

I have reset the thing and upgraded firmware to what I think is the latest version (filename ending in 22) from Spark's website.

Problem persists.

Any suggestions?

Recently had fibre installed by Chorus. Problem has developed since then.

Used to have VDSL and this is still connected - could this be the issue.

We were entitled to a free modem with our fibre, so I've ordered that but spark sent it to our old address.

How fast is a Firewalla Blue?

How fast is a Firewalla Blue?

dimensions: 4 x 4 x 3cm

Introduction:

Advertised as "Smart & Powerful Cyber Security Firewall Appliance Protecting Your Family and Business", this tiny box is a hardware firewall with numerous options including: device management, parental control, VPN server, dynamic DNS, ad block, intrusion prevention, and bandwidth measurement.

It is available at two spec levels:Firewalla Red: "affordable" (USD $109), 100 MbitFirewalla Blue: "powerful, pro version" (USD $179) >500 Mbit

The Firewalla website is in the USA, and the device ships from China.

I am on a "gigabit" HFC cable connection in Wellington, and therefore bought the Firewalla Blue.

The Firewalla website claims: "The Blue will allow all of these wonderful security features to run at near gigabit speeds. Our current code is able to do 400 to 500 Mbits, and by the time we deliver, we should be closer to gigabit speed."

I am very impressed with this tiny device, and it does what it says on the box, with one exception - speed.

Without the Firewalla I can get downstream 950 Mbit/sec from Auckland and 850 Mbit/sec from Melbourne. With Firewalla connected, speeds immediately drop to about 400 to 500 Mbit/sec or worse.

While realising that for real-world purposes there is no difference between 800 and 400 Mbit/sec, the geek in me wants to know if other users have the same "problem."

Do any other Geekzoners use this device?

How well has it performed for you?

Home networking - powerline vs wifi to ethernet bridge? Ethernet switch vs router vs splitter vs... ?

$

Hi all, First post!

Come to my limit with google searches... I can read the product numbers but not sure what all the terms mean! Would much appreciate any advice...

We have fibre coming through a Calix T072G HGU ONT with 4 GB ethernet ports. This is wired to a FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7360 modem/router which has at least 2 GB ports, think the others might be 10/100.These are in the living room.

I have a WD My Cloud Mirror Gen 2 (I know these don't have the best reputation) which I want to set up in my home office downstairs so I can have an Ethernet connection to my laptop (through a dock).

So, questions -

1) powerline vs wifi to ethernet bridge? Is a range extender OK as a wifi to ethernet bridge? (I see wirecutter recommends TP-Link TL-WPA8630 V2 or TP-Link AC750 Wi-Fi Range Extender RE200)

2) How to get the laptop and NAS to talk to each other? Ethernet switch vs router vs splitter vs... ?

WD recomends GB connections between NAS and ? and Laptop

Is there a device can do 1 & 2 together !?

Cheers.....?

setting to use vodafone ultra hub as phone line only.

Hi There,

I'm sure this has been answered elsewhere, but the threads I've been reading seem related to other model routers and the steps don't seem quite the same.

Vodafone have supplied a vodafone ultrahub for our fibre connection. We don't want to use this and have our existing router set-up on the fibre connection and running fine. However, we want to use the vodafone voip connection, and so want to connect the ultrahub to our router to act as a phone connection only.

I'm just wondering if someone has experience with this model and can post the settings that we should be changing to get this working through our exisiting router?

Appreciate any help here!

OpenVPN: Accessing client LAN (site-to-site)

$

I've got an OpenVPN site-to-site setup working ok, but unable to access any devices connected to the client side LAN.

This is between HOME (fibre connection) and a remote house (connected via 2degrees 4g, so CGNAT). Remote location has a bunch of IoT sensors, etc

Take this very simplified network diagram below, which highlights the key setup. (I've not included all the dozens of other home/remote devices to not confuse things)

Summary of setup:

OpenVPN server pushes routes to client

OpenVPN server has client-config-dir, and file containing iroute for client

Remote site is always connected to Home via OpenVPN

Mobile phone can connect to home network as required

What works:

Remote site connected via OpenVPN

Raspberry Pi can ping and access all HOME devices

Mobile connected via OpenVPN

Mobile can access HOME devices, plus access REMOTE raspberry pi

OpenVPN Server & Home devices (e.g. Desktop) can:

Ping all REMOTE devices (e.g. Raspberry pi, remote huawei modem, and wemos d1 minis)These work:

ping 192.168.10.1

ping 192.168.10.2

ping 192.168.10.10

Access Raspberry Pi via SSH, VNCserver, web, etc

What does not work:

Home devices (OpenVPN server or desktop) cannot access anything at REMOTE apart from raspberry pi.e.g. Home device cannot access web interface of Huawei modem, OR access Wemos d1 minis

Accessing this fails: http://192.168.10.1, or http://192.168.10.10

When running tcpdump for tun0 on the Raspberry Pi at REMOTE:

Ping from HOME to any REMOTE IP shows packets transmitted/received, OK

HTTP web request from HOME to REMOTE Raspberry Pi, shows packets transmitted/received, OK

HTTP web request from HOME to other REMOTE device (192.168.10.1), shows packets transmitted, nothing received, FAILED

Suspect this is a routing issue, but it's doing my head in!

Wondering if I need a better 4g modem/router at the REMOTE location, that will allow to set a static route in the router, telling remote LAN devices to route openvpn requests back via the raspberry pi???

At the moment the only way I can access the web interface of other devices at REMOTE, is to VNC into the Raspberry Pi, and then use the Raspberry Pi desktop and browser remotely to access those devices.

Synology router, netcomm modem

Chorus ONT: Does it have a user accessible front end or is it simply 'dumb' to the consumer?

$

I'm looking at my Active Directory 'powered' network and the distribution of my domain controller IPs in relation to my router and VDSL modem. Presently, my router is on 192.168.1.1 with my modem on 192.168.0.1 with static links to allow access, however I was thinking of moving the modem in to the main IP range for simplicity... As we're about to get fibre enabled in our street and therefore the modem will go the way of the dodo and be replaced by the ONT I was wondering whether the ONT had a user facing component or if it was simply a 'dumb' unit from the consumer perspective? There is no point moving the IP addresses around if I'm no longer going to need access to internet connection stats.

Time for new router

$

Over the last few years, Ive had HG659's, and Zyxel's......... the Huawei range drives me up the wall, port mapping never works for me. The Zyxel has been great but occasionally has port mapping issues, and VoIP drops out at random (was also restarting itself at random but firmware fixed that).

So I'm starting to think its time I get a decent router. Ideally I want one that has built in ATA for VoIP but that usually points me back to the Huawei style unit...

Phone is via VoIP - wife wants to continue using our cordless handsets. (else Id just go softphone via mobile app)

ISP = BigPipe 100/100

I run a server at home (email, web, games)

So I either look at "high end consumer" router with built in ATA, or something more basic yet reliable (Ubiquiti etc) with a separate ATA....

Budget is limited (as usual) so $400 routers are out of the question :-p

Thoughts/suggestions ?

Using a telephone module plugged into ONT

$

I posted part of this question in the Spark forum earlier, but the issue I am currently having is possibly nothing to do with Spark, as there is now current a dial tone again on the line, and I have done more testing. Plus I still haven't got that issue with Spark resolved as to why the phone line keeps going down, but that is really different issue to this one.

The electrician left a telephone module to allow phone line to be split and patched around the home, which is this one http://www.electricsmarts.com/industry/smartecat/product/view/Hubbell/NSOMTM12 . The module is plugged into the POTS1 port on the ONT, and into the number 1 on the voice input line as shown in the photo below. However when it is patched to any of the rooms from the 1,2,3,4 ports below, there is no dial tone. However if I patch it from the TEST-IN PORT to a room, there is a dial tone. I am wondering if I am missing something, or this isn't the right type of module they should be using. I notice that the photo of the product on this website, shows the TEST-IN and TEST -OUT line linked with a wire. I am wondering if the electrician forgot to put that in, because they just left the module in the network cabinet with no box, instructions or cables etc, and it doesn' t look like there are any downloadable instructions. Anyone know, or am I right, and it needs the test ports linking?

Can the HG659B bridge PPPoE?

I'm looking at setting up a Meraki appliance on a VDSL connection and would like to have the Meraki (MX84) do the PPPoE for the WAN connection.

Can the (Vodafone) HG659 bridge the connection (so all it acts as is the modem) or do I need to look at getting something like a Draytek Vigor 130?
