Advice setting up filezilla server with Huawei HG659b Modem and google mesh.

$

I tried to set up a filezilla server the other day to share some large files with friends and ran into trouble due to issues requiring bridging etc.

I'm not very technical but I can usually follow instructions.

As mentioned in the title I have a Huawei HG659b Modem and a google mesh with 3 satellites set up around the place.

One is in the garage which is about 20m from the house and contains my mining computers which are wired into a switch that's connected to the mesh unit.

I am open to changing my hardware if that would help but I am not completely confident to attempt the bridging in case I can't get the net back up for some reason :)

Cheers

Trying to setup old Huawei HG630b as an AP

I must be missing something simple. I'm trying to setup an old Huawei wireless router as a 2nd access point by following the instructions from @Jase2985 in this old post here, but I'm having problems.

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=173220#1305877

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/convert_wifi_router_to_access_point.htm

Basically I'm falling at the first hurdle. Note my current router (an Asus RT-AC58U) has a DHCP IP pool within 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254. I can login into the admin page for the HG630b, and type an alternate static IP (I've tried 192.168.1.252) but when I hit Submit to commit the settings, the HG630 basically becomes unresponsive and I have to do a factory reset to be able to see the admin page again.

Seems like there is some kind of conflict going on - but I'm no expert at these types of issues. Note the IP address of the HG630b is 192.168.1.254.

Any ideas most welcome.

Strange IP issue on small network

I have a small network for remote camera monitoring. I run Sighthound on an Intel NUC through a small 4 port POE switch to a Hikvision camera. There is also a Netatmo weather station running on wifi and a few wifi sonoff plugs. This is through a Skinny 4G connection using the Huawei 240G plan (sorry cant remember the modem model)Huawei is set to serve DHCP in the range 192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.150 the camera is .199 static IP.It was working. Then it became intermittent, and now I cant ping the .199 address at all. I thought cable or camera fault but they both check out fine, and when I log into the network via wifi on a laptop I can see .199 every time. I run Nirsoft Wireless Network Watcher to see whats up as well as DOS ping.I have tried changing the camera IP as well as assigning it DHCP IP.I have turned off firewalls etc although the laptop works with firewall on anyway.I have tried flushdns and netsh int ip resetI have read most of the internet trying to sort it, but nothing pops out as a cause or fix.Anyone have an idea what might cause this?

Do gaming routers help speed?

Hi,

I recently signed up with 2Degrees for broadband.

Great customer support. However, when I play online games in my console, I get occasional random lag.

I didn't experience lags in gaming when I was living with my parents. Their broadband was Vodafone, but their router was a gaming one.

Is it worth buying a gaming router to avoid lag?

Help connecting Asus RT AC86U to Spark Fibre

I have connected the router straight up too the ONT and it connects but then when I restart the router never connects until I do a factory reset. The system logs are full of 'net: apply redirect rules error' and 'modem hangup' errors.

The Huawei that comes with the fibre works great so do I need to set it up in bridge mode and then connect my Asus up to the huawei?

Has anyone here got a RT AC86U running normally on Spark Fibre?

Unifi-AP-AC-PRO vs VF Ultrahub modem for wifi

Hello.

I currently have a VF Ultrahub providing my 5GHz wifi, and a microtek? thingy from TrueNet doing the 2.4Ghz.

I would quite like to nix the Truenet router, but I've been wondering if it's a good idea to have the VF router doing everything.

I have recommended the AC-Pro to others whose wifi just wasn't up to snuff and its worked marvelously for them.

If I were to do the same would I expect to see much of a performance improvement?

Slow download speed only on overseas servers using WAP

Hi everyone, I've recently set up an old router I had (Spark Huawei Hg630B) as a Wireless Access Point upstairs to improve the WIFI signal. My main router is located downstairs and it is a VDSL/FIBRE Dual Band AC1600 Gigabit Gateyway with VoIP provided by Orcon. The router and the WAP are connected using an ethernet cable that goes from LAN to LAN. The settings of the WAP were set according to these instructions:

"

Under Home Newtork-->LAN Interface-->LAN Settings, change modem IP address to a different range than main modem (I used 192.168.3.1), and Device Name to something else as well. Save and log into the modem with the new IP address

Under WAN/internet settings un-tick/disable all connection types (ADSL, VDSL, Ethernet etc). Save settings.

Under Home Network-->WLAN Settings change SSIDs and password to be identical to the main router. Save settings.

Under Home Network-->LAN Interface-->DHCP Server un-tick DHCP Server, and save settings.

"

I did not change any settings in the main router. Both networks have the same name "Your New Wi-fi" and password, although the main router has an extra 5Ghz network created that the WAP doesn't.

The problem I have is I am getting very slow download speeds using the WAP, but only on some websites. For example, if I download from Google Drive, I normally get a speed of about 4MB/s, which is good and similar to what I get connected to the main router. However, downloading from Mega the download speed is no bigger than 100kB/s, which is extremly slow. I began to try diagnose why this was happening so I did some internet connection speeds using the Ookla speedtest website, which lets you choose a server to test your connection on.

What I found was that when testing using a server in NZ, I get very good results: 4.5MB/s download, 4ms ping, 2.5MB/s upload. These are similar to what I get when connected to the main router.

However, when testing using a server overseas, the San Francisco one, I get very slow results: 0.01MB/s download, 164ms ping, 0.17MB/s upload. Meanwhile, when connected to the main router and performing the same test, I get results similar to the ones mentioned above for NZ (around 4MB/s download).

So clearly it seems that the problem is nothing to do with the ISP, but with the settings of the WAP that seems to give me very slow speeds when connecting to overseas servers, but normal speeds when connected to NZ servers. I don't really know much about networks so I was hoping someone would be able to help me diagnose what could be causing this behaviour, and how I am able to fix it.

Thanks for your help!

Metro Ethernet Providers in New Zealand

Hi There

Any recommended Metro Ethernet providers in NZ? I'm looking for metro ethernet connectivity between branches and a Data Centre. I'm aware that Vector has a metro ethernet offering and Spark has their equivalent, Carrier Ethernet.

I'm interested to hear from anyone who has had any experience with any other providers?

Thanks

Home network and switch question.

Hey all.

Just moved into my new house which is hard wired with data cabling. All leading to the garage into a patch panel, and currently the router into the ONT from the study.

My plan is to purchase 2 x gigabit switches. The first one will sit in the lounge to expand the single data point allow TV, PS4 & Vodafone TV to all hardwire into the network.

The second switch will be placed in the garage cabinet. The router will have two connections going into the patch, one into the ONT and one into the switch.

Does the sound correct to allow the house to talk with the router and to expand the single data point beside the TV?

Cheers.

ethernet cable for home network

I am considering laying some ethernet cables to add an access point and to have a wired connection to the TV.

1. I was thinking of using cat6 Dynamix C-C6-SLDBLUE. Is that a good choice?

2. It could become necessary to bury a small length in the ground, would Dynamix C-C6EXT-SLDBK be suitable?

3. Any general tips on pulling wires will be welcome. (All this will be underneath the house, wires emerging into wall cavities at the destinations.)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you think I could get more speed getting a dedicated card like this ? https://www.computerlounge.co.nz/shop/components/expansion-cards/network-cards/tp-link-tg-3468-32-bit-gigabit-pci-e-network-adaptor

Also, the new white fibre box. Is that the modem and is the other box just spreading the wifi/lan or does it use two modems/

Gate video intercom options (VOIP phone?)

$

We are needing to replace our current gate video intercom & unlock system (or more correctly, had an electrician attempt to do it but messed up such that we now have no intercom to the gate). Gate is about 80 m from & not in sight of the house and is normally locked so we need the intercom to unlock the gate when unexpected visitors arrive. Existing system was an old Kocom unit but the video was shot and the system now dissembled! Original link to gate was a ducted 6-wire security cable but that has now been pulled and replaced by new cat6 cable (gel filled, underground variety) in the existing duct.

I have looked at Panasonic residential video intercom systems which seem to be one of the more common ones used. But have been underwhelmed by what appears to be about 15 year old technology and the inadequate weatherproofing of the door/gate stations - all only IPx4. Despite diagrams showing typical installations on a post some distance from a house, IPx4 is not adequate for our situation where the gate unit will be exposed to rain from the front. Most of the units are only IP44, which is probably inadequate even dust-wise for us (gravel driveway, pine pollen). Only one system can use mobile phones as secondary monitors and that only in-house via wifi, or by email notification. Fixed monitor on that system has a resolution of only 480 x 272. Also, other than their apartment series, none of the Panasonic options include keypad and video intercom on a single gate station.

One alternative that looks interesting is a Fanvil i30 SIP Video Doorphone unit (link removed to enable posting). This is a new product released only a few months ago though there has been a similar i31 version around for several years - dearer & more robust (IK10) but not needed in our case. The i30 has an ideal combination of keypad, RFID card reader, and video intercom on a single gate station & is IP65 - not great but passable. Also highly configurable, with detailed instructions in generally good English. Plus Fanvil have a local NZ presence (NZ staff) and a number of local suppliers/installers. PB Tech also have the unit in stock but their staff appear to know little about it ("its a new product - do not really know anything about it").

Two main concerns are the SIP phone aspect and apparent lack of a matching dedicated monitor. Fanvil are primarily a SIP phone manufacturer and their door intercom units seem designed to mainly link to SIP phones. I understand that for offices systems, eg. at reception in a office setting, which is probably the main target market. I gather most of the local (north Auckland) installers would likely not be interested in a one-unit, residential type install. But a SIP phone as the primary monitor in the kitchen would likely have a low WAF. And I really would rather avoid having to buy and configure an IP PBX just to run the gate video intercom

The website linked above does though indicate that it can be installed P2P, to link the i30 directly with a VOIP phone, PC or SIP softphone without use of a PBX. Also shows the i30 connected to a dedicated wall monitor. These features may be new to the i30. I have spoken with one local supplier/installer (BANX) and their tech person who handles Fanvil was not aware of either the P2P or dedicated wall monitor options (this being a new model). I pointed him to the website above and he offered to follow up with Fanvil but that was a week ago and I have not heard back since :(.

Is anyone familiar with this unit or know of a reasonably priced alternative that offers the same level of functionality? Preference is for a keypad, RFID card reader, and video intercom on a single gate station, a minimum of IP65 (67 better), decent video resolution, a main video wall monitor and ability to have a secondary monitor (PC would be adequate as the secondary - work from home situation). Remote smartphone capability would be great, though that can come later - would need be sure of the system security first. If at all possible, something under $1k all up. At a pinch something like the Fanvil C600 IP phone would do for the main monitor but it seems overkill and for WAF would prefer a simple dedicated monitor as indicated in a couple of images on the Fanvil website for the i30.

There is cat6 cable from the gate to the wall monitor location, or alternatively to our router and/or main switch at the other end of the house. Main switch is a Netgear GS724T v4. It has both voice & video VLAN capability and is connected to a Unifi AP AC LR wireless access point that provides good wifi to the main wall monitor location (hence WiFi only connection to the main monitor would be OK).

PLC Remote Access with same subnets

Hey Everyone, I hope someone can help me. I have softether running on windows server on a VPS. I have successfully setup up server and clients and can connect via PC and the 4G LTE Route (Teltonika RUT240 ) and can access siemens s7-1200 PLC. I have a NAT setup on VPN server with 192.168.5.1 and have given PLC static IP of 192.168.5.10 and Have set static IP on TAP Interface on PC with 192.168.5.15 and have Installed virtual ethernet adapter (microsoft loopback) and assigned a satic IP of 192.168.5.20 and bridged the connections in softether server to the virtual hub. This now gives me access from server to PLC ( I can ping PLC from Server and Engineering PC ) I can connect to the PLC from PC fine. The Problem I now have Is I have a lot of PLCs at remote sites already set up and they all have the same subnets and they can not be changed (connected to other devices in the network I have no control over) I have thought about setting up individual NATs on the routers I will be installing but it seems the OpenVPN TAP client in the router is bridged to the local lan and can't be altered. The other issue I see is the SCADA software running on the server needs to access these PLC ( I set the PLC IP address in the software for which one they connect to) I now have an issue as they all have same IP so I was possibly thinking about setting PLC IP in the software as the NAT ip set on the Router and then create static route to the PLC on the router. If I need to access PLC network from Engineering PC I will just connect to server and set the TAP IP to the NAT the PLC is on and may need to cascade the connection to that particular virtual VPN Hub.I will link a diagram for a better understandingIf anyone has any better ideas or ways of achieving this would be great

Wireless on computer drops out only on 5GHz

We recently got Gigabit internet and over the past two weeks or so the 5GHz has been dropping out on my computer...

It connects fine, works for a few minutes then drops out completely all of a sudden. When hovering over the network, it says "No internet, secured" but still has the white range bars as if it's connected to the network (and if you hover over the internet icon on task bar it shows the network name which should mean there is a connection there.

Because of this I am connecting to 2.4GHz WiFi (which there are no connection issues with) but I'd love to resume connecting to the 5GHz network as obviously the speeds are much faster...

Unfortunately I am also too far away from the router to connect via ethernet and be done with the issue...

Below are my computer specs. I have tried reinstalling the WiFi driver...

For example, to test the issue I tried connecting to the 5GHz WiFi just a moment ago to see what was going to happen...

It connected, was fine for a minute or so, came up with "no internet, secured" for a further 5 minutes then resumed being connected...

It's been about 15 minutes and it hasn't dropped out again (yet) but I know it's on a matter of time.

I've also done a wlan report - if you need a screenshot of another part of the report, let me know...

I've noticed that there is a unknown device that is connected to our home network so i have blocked it and it appears to be trying to connect every 2hours.

I'm really stumped on what this device is as it has used 5.50gb/250mb of traffic in the past 15 days.

Does anyone know how i should go about looking for it? I've asked around the house and it doesn't appear to be anyone's device.

Router or Mesh system?

I'm on the 100/20 plan on Orcon and using the router that it came with. Have just upgraded for the Gigantic Fibre plan so waiting for that to set up.That being said, I'm experiencing dead spots around the house (just 100 sqm) and thinking that the router that it comes with is pretty standard so thinking of improving it. I use a TP-Link powerline ethernet adapter in my room which connects to my comp and the modem is on the other side of the house with multiple walls in between. Not brick walls tho. I get about 65mbps down on LAN and on WiFi about 30mps. Understandably I won't get the max 100 but was wondering if other solutions will help.Currently contemplating on either getting the TP-Link Archer AX6000 or Ubiquiti AMPLIFI AFi-HD Mesh Wi-Fi System after I get on Gigantic.Any recommendations on what I should do?

Not sure if this matters but current setup:

Hey guys!I've been wanting to set up a VPN for a while now, but have only just started seriously looking into it.I'm a bit of a rookie when it comes to this stuff, but usually can pick it up fast!I'm interested in Nord VPN, but am wanting to run it through the router as to be able to keep my smart tv/chromecast/netflix etc all working together without hassle. I haven't had much luck in finding any guides or info on setting Nord VPN up on a fritzbox. I'm pretty sure it is possible, but want to make sure and see if anyone knows how.

If anyone could offer some guidance that would be much appreciated! I'm open to looking at other options also. Thanks!

New house build & network (Ubiquiti setup)

Hi,

Long time reader, first time poster...I'm after advice probably on a few fronts.

I've done a lot of reading on these forums and elsewhere. I am currently doing a new build and we are close to having the cabling put into the house (290sqm / 2 storey). This is what will be being run in currently:2 * outdoor security cameras, 1 * indoor security camera3 * TV's each with 4 * cat6 terminations2 other cat6 terminations2 * WAP points

In terms of hardware I've pretty much made up my mind to use Ubiquiti after reading a lot of positive articles and watching videos.

This is the hardware I'm thinking of:Security Gateway USG / RouterCloud key Gen2 Plus2 * WAP - UPA-AC-LR Dual band AC13503 * cameras - still determining exactly which modelsSwitch(s) - I'm not too sure here, I need to cover POE for the cameras and WAPs and also the other non POE terminationsPatch panelCabinet

I guess firstly I'm after advice on the following:Patch panels - best Ubiquiti switch option(s) to cover what I've listedPatch panel & cabinet recommendations based on the aboveWhere to set the cabinet. I have 2 options really, in the garage which is easy to access or a reasonably sized access under the stairs. And finally the general set up I've gone for.

Any help / advice would be appreciated.

Why would pfsense take an hour to connect to Spark Fibre?

$

Yesterday I tried to set up a pfsense box on my spark fibre connection (WAN as PPPoE on vlan 10). Everything else was disconnected except a linux laptop connected to the pfsense GUI (static IPv4 LAN). I could see my public IP address, ping Google's 8.8.8.8 etc. but from the laptop itself 8.8.8.8 was unreachable (laptop could ping its own ip address given by dhcp).

I gave up, shut down the pfsense router & returned to using the previous setup (Spark's HG659b). This morning I tried again, same problem, still couldn't figure it out. Then after an hour mucking around pinging & ponging & looking (but not changing) stuff in both pfsense gui & my laptop's terminal it all came right without rebooting or changing any settings. I reconnected my switch, wifi etc. & all seems well. But it bothers me that I have no idea what happened (maybe I'm blind & changed something inadvertently). I'm very much an amateur, but presumably PPPoE discovery & recognising the router's MAC address had already taken place, so why the delay? This was a pretty vanilla setup, firewall was default allowing stuff out originating on the LAN, DNS Server settings were as per the old router, DHCP was always enabled & there was only the laptop & pfsense router at my end. So my question is, for those who know much more than me, is this likely to be something at Spark's end that was so slow, or my pfsense box (its not virtualized, amd64, Intel Pro/1000 nic etc.)?

Without wishing to recreate whatever mess I was in, can anyone tell me what sort of steps I (or anyone else in a similar position) should have done to isolate the problem?

New Spark Modem has open unsecured open connection

Hi there

I need advice and or help on my new Spark WiFi modem (delivered in the last week) ... we have three connections available .. the two standard secure connections on 2.4 and 5 GHz bands which I understand.

The WiFi connection from the new modem that I don't understand is an open connection that is unsecured. I have spoken to a few technicians at Spark about this but don't get an answer that makes sense. Has anyone come across this ? What should I do ?

I have connected to the admin page of the modem in the usual way but this open connection cannot be accessed or seen.

When I power the modem off ... I see all connections on my mobile phone and they are marked as 'Not in range' as is usual when you are not near to the WiFi source.

Thanks for any help
