Connecting Fibre ONT to router through a patch panel

I have just had Fibre installed and the ONT is installed next to an 8 port patch panel in the garage. I have plugged the ONT directly into a port in the patch panel that terminates in my home office. I have connected the Huawei router in the home office to that wall network port and it accepts the connection and works well. I have other devices plugged directly into the router and I also have the wireless access point on the router turned on and that works well too. The issue I am having is how to extend the network to other wired network ports around the house. I tried running an ethernet cable from the router into another wall network port in the home office but that didn't extend the network. I also tried running an ethernet cable between the router and a small network switch, and then plugged the network switch into the wall ethernet port but that didn't work either. I suspect it could be something to do with connecting the router to the ONT via the patch panel rather than directly. With my old setup I had an ADSL modem plugged into a router and the router was plugged into a wall network port and this distributed the network around the house just fine. Any advice appreciated!
