Windows 10 excessive network usage: how to track

$

Anyone has any good ideas on how to track network usage on Windows 10? The built-in tool is only good for Windows Apps really.

Parents-in-law have two laptops, on a metered connection while on a road trip, used 3GB in a couple of days. I am told they only use Trade Me, Stuff and Email (Outlook with Google Suite sync app).

They also have Crashplan and Google Drive. Those were 100% synced before leaving (they have a fibre connection at home).

To save some of the mobile WiFi they plugged into a campsite WiFi - 1GB per day. One of the laptops used 100% of this in less than a day.

Disabled Crashplan and Google Drive. No torrents, presumably no malware (they run as Standard users, have Norton AV installed, MB runs periodically).

Is there anything I can use to track usage? If not previous usage at least something I can install and track that more accurately than Windows does?

Just released for those CloudKey owners who haven't manually upgraded. Feature updates.

https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Updates-Blog/UniFi-Cloud-Key-firmware-0-7-3-has-been-released/ba-p/2011908

5.5.20 has been OK for me so far. I tried the 5.6 series but it's still marked 'unstable' for a reason.

LetsEncrypt - private ssl certs

Of the back of https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=208215

@freitasm - I understand how to do the letsencrypt for the public accessible parts of my network (I've got public accessible site running off home).

But for your other internal names where you own the domain, how are you doing the renewals if they're not accessible for verification on the internet?

So I have

home.mydomain.com - this is accessible this points to a machine that I internally call machine.mydomain.com

So I manually created a certificate last night for home.mydomain.com and machine.mydomain.com and used the dns verification. But apprarently for renewal I'll need to do that all over again.

How are others handling it?

Netcomm NF17ACV setup trouble when it comes to connecting to spark ultra fast broadband

Recently, I brought a Netcomm NF17ACV router modem from PB tech due to the fact that the Huawei router from spark literally died within two months and instead I brought a Netcomm NF17ACV because according to PB Tech, it is compatible with Spark's Ultra Fast Broadband network. When I spoke to a Spark service center agent, I was sent the following specifications:

Operating Mode : MDI/MDIX

PPP Protocol : PPPoE

PPP Username: user@spark.co.nz

PPP Password: password

PPP Auth Type : PAP

PPP Mode : Always on (Dial on Demand disabled)

Encapsulation : 802.1Q

PCP Marking : 0

VID (or VLAN) : 10

MTU : 1,500 or AUTOI would like to know how do I make the Netcomm NF17ACV modem or router run on the MDI or MDIX operating mode as specified by Spark and overall the settings provided by Spark which should be implemented into the Netcomm NF17ACV modem or router

Looking for options/recommendations for an organisation to provide temporary medium density wifi in an outdoor space? High speed internet already available, just the wifi coverage needed. For example, installation and rental of Xirrus APs on tripods, etc.

Strange WiFi behaviour

Hi all,

My in-laws recently changed over to Orcon's 100/20 fibre. They weren't really impressed with the WiFi speeds, so I had a look.

A couple of weeks ago, I ran speed tests using WiFi on the Netcomm NF4V (stock Orcon modem) using a phone and laptop in the same room as the modem, which returned very varied results.Downloads were anywhere from 1-40mbps down and uploads ranged from 1-20mbps.Just to check it wasn't the connection, I hooked up a ethernet cable to the modem and ran a few other tests, resulting in fairly consistent speeds around 100/20.

I have the same plan, with the same modem. A few years ago I added a Netgear R7000 via ethernet to my modem and greatly improved the WiFi.Thinking my in-laws' WiFi issue was similar, I bought them a Netgear R8000 and connected it to the modem via ethernet. With the new router I get fairly good download speeds (60-90mbps) down, but only 1-3mbps upload! Weird!

I enabled the WiFi on the Netcomm NF4V and performed a few more tests resulting speeds around 40 down/20 up (the upload on the Netcomm seemed more stable).Reconnecting the R8000, I connected to the 2.4G, and both 5G WiFi bands and couldn't get upload speeds past 10mbps.I thought it might be the room, so I took my 10m ethernet cable and tried moving the R8000 to the living room.

To eliminate variables, I brought the R8000 home, replacing my R8000 and consistently get over 90mbps down and around 20mbps up with wireless and wired.

I have run out of ideas, and I can't pinpoint the issue from my tests. The Netcomm NF4V seems to have good upload now, but delivers less than half the download bandwidth, whereas the Netgear R8000 delivers good download speed but unusually low upload speed.

Anyone else experienced this before?Any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks!

testvf.co.nz/files archive anyone?

So I've been messing around with my old HG556a modem with Openwrt, anyway I went to go to the trusty testvf website where they hosted firmware and it's gone :O

Now normally I would have a backup of this stuff but it appears that I do not. I did try the wayback machine but they only had a copy of one file and it's a bin2 which i dont think will work.

Anyway this is a call to anyone who has a copy of the latest firmware still on their pc, hopefully someone can send it to me!

Hi there,

I've been advised by Vodafone that Ipv6 is enabled on my FibreX connection but I can't get an Ipv6 address using the suggested Auto Config set up for the R7000. Anyone have any luck doing so? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

USG RADIUS Server

Hi,

I've noticed that in version 5.5 of the UniFi controller they've exposed the USG's FreeRadius server configuration inside the controller UI. Currently I run a free radius server on a raspberry pi that does WPA2-Enterprise WiFi authentication, but seeing that the option is now available on the USG I'd be keen to run it on there instead.

I'm just a bit confused about the configuration options on the USG. In the screen to create a new user it requires a tunnel type and a tunnel medium type. I am unsure what to set these options to in order to match the configuration I currently have. I've setup my existing Free Radius server to only authenticate when using EAP-PEAP with MSCHAPv2

Option screen inside UniFi controller:

What would be the correct settings to use here?

Thanks!

VPN noob - not working on Spark free wifi zones

I have an openvpn server set up on a raspberrypi 3 and the openvpn app on android.

I can use openvpn fine on mobile data, and have used it on private wifi connections fine. What I am struggling with is getting it to work on Spark free wifi. It seems to connect/authenticate fine, but I cannot do anything from there. Nothing will load in browsers/facebook/email etc etc. Yet when I use the Astrill app, I can use their vpn services fine.

Any ideas as to how/why I cannot get my own VPN to work, yet it works fine with Astrill?

Adding a second UniFi AP

Hi and thanks in advance for your patience and comments!

So, added a UAP AC AP LR from picked up from TM onto my Spark supplied VDSL modem - it's attached off one of the built-in router ports on a cable that runs from the office to the downstairs rumpus room at the far end of the house. I downloaded the controller software from Uniquiti and blundered my way setting up an SSID name and password and it just pretty much worked once I realised one of my patch cables was bad. Only issue is that the power cable's fit into the POE adapter is terrible - it easily falls out. Not sure if the socket has a defect as the pins look ok.

So at the moment the upstairs/left side of the house has better coverage from the Spark modem's (Huawei VDSL) somewhat weak 2.4GHz wifi and the downstairs/right side of the house has better coverage from the UAP's decent 2.4/5GHz. Not ideal for mobile devices that are moved between the two areas as it hangs onto the original network. So I figure I should get another UAP for upstairs, and have a couple of questions...

Does it matter what kind of UniFi AP I get? I mean, the downstairs one has 2.4GHz/5GHz but I don't really care if the upstairs one only does 2.4GHz as far as speed is concerned - as long as it won't confuse the devices?

Does the second unit need to be permanently connected to a wired LAN or can it mesh off the first unit? If the latter is that something tricky to configure? The controller software seems quite complex as I guess it caters to enterprise use as well as simpletons.

Any other recommendations?

Thanks again,

JohnO

Hi, thanks for taking the time.

I have a TPLink Wr1043ND v4 router. I wanted to put gargoyle firmware on. They don't support v4. Haven't bricked it yet :)

If you are aware of other firmware that support TL-WR1043ND v4 (similar to gargoyle etc) please respond.

Cheers

Hi There!

We have a customer who wants to stop his sons 2 devices being able to access the internet at all between 10pm and 7am Sunday > Thursday and 12am to 7am Friday and Saturday.

He has 200Mbps Fibre.

Anyone able to recommend something? We normally supply Zyxel here, but unfortunately, there appears an issue with these routers being able to reliably provide this feature set.

DNS resolution over Unifi USG L2TP VPN

$

Hi there,

I have just setup a nice shiney new USG + USW-24 + 2xUAP home network, running the latest version of the Unifi controller software - v5.5.20.

I have a number of different VLANs setup and dnsmasq running on a VM on my network. The USG has DHCP disabled as dnsmasq handles everything DHCP/DNS related.

I am trying to setup a remote user VPN on the USG so I can connect in on my phone or laptop and access my main data VLAN (.10).

I followed the online guides and have enabled the USG radius server, setup the Remote User VPN (L2TP), and can successfully connect and authenticate using my Android phone. From my phone I can access the .10 VLAN via direct IP addresses.

However I cannot access anything via my internal hostnames/aliases - e.g. my openHAB server is 192.168.10.103 but is also accessible via openhab.home. However when connecting via the L2TP VPN I cannot *see* these hostnames.

I have tried leaving the VPN "Name Server" config on the USG empty, tried specifying the dnsmasq server, but nothing seems to work. Also tried explicitly setting the dnsmasq server IP address in the client VPN config, but no difference.

I know the phone can access those servers, but I just can't figure out how to get it to use the dnsmasq DNS server.

Anyone got any tips or suggestions about what I am missing here?!

Cheers,

Ben

QNAP VPN setup question

Hi

Have just started to set up a QNAP 251+ NAS - first time so lots of fun. I am trying to get a VPN set up to browse folders on the NAS via my Android phone.

I have discovered that my LG G2 (lollipop) won't work using the android IPsec VPN (phone resets when I try and make a connection) so I am using OpenVPN.

I have managed to get the OpenVPN to connect from the phone to the NAS direrctly and can see the shared folders, but cannot open these folders (eg multimedia, public etc).

I am using ES file explorer to view the folders on the phone.

Any thoughts on what may be the issue or where I should be looking - any googled suggestions I have tried are not helping.

Cheers

[Phone line] What sort of punchdown block is this?

Hi guys,

I've got to clean up some wiring at work, one being a Frankenstein of a connection which has seen many PBX changes and must have a dozen open circuit wires, etc.

I removed the blue and blue/white from the block and replaced with my own connected to a modem, which didn't work. I also tried with the other pair which is terminated: orange orange/white which didn't work either. There is so many joiners, terminations/crimps throughout the whole system I'm not sure if my understanding of how this block works is wrong, or if I've completely identified the wrong cable.

I've put a square of one pair I tested:

As far as I can tell this isn't a 66 or 110 block, any ideas?

older black genius orcon modem / router as an access point or repeater

$

I recently went from a 30mbps / 10mbps fibre plan to a a 100mbps / 20mbps fibre plan. They sent me a new white orcon modem / router which works great, I was thinking that I might use the older black genius orcon one as an access point or repeater at the back of the house where there is a weaker signal. I found several web sites that talk about this type of thing, but not with my specific old modem / router. All attempts I have made to configure it seem to fail. Is it actually possible to achieve what I was wanting to do? And if so how can it be done?

HG659b issues when used in conjunction with an Access Point

$

I have a Spark supplied HG659b that works perfectly on Ethernet and Wifi (both 2.4 and 5).

However when I connect (via a LAN cable) an Access Point I get unreliable connection to the internet via the Access Point (the AP even says it has no internet connection when this issue occurs) and we get different devices unable to connect via wifi on both devices (ie including the HG659b).

I have tried 3 different Access Point devices and all have the same issue so I have concluded the problem is in the HG659b setup and it something to do with how it is dealing with IP addresses as it all works perfectly fine when both devices are booted up, but then at a later time these various issues arise. It seems to be most noticeable that it occurs after a device has successfully been using the AP, but then when there is no internet traffic via the AP it is as though the HG659b is disconnecting the internet from the AP.

I have no idea why even devices connected to the HG659b via wifi will lose the connection while others will remain connected. It seems like some sort of IP conflict, but I cannot see why it occurs. However as soon as I switch off the AP the devices immediately get connection to the HG659b again.

The three Access Points I have tried are:

WD MY Net N900 Central operating in AP mode (it has an option to select this)

An Old Vodafone Station with DHCP turned off

An old Vodafone HG 556a with HDCP turned off.

In all cases (and for both the HG659b and the AP) the wifi channels are set to fixed and different channels.

Where possible I have tried the AP using a Static IP.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am missing.

It seems like there must be some setting in the HG659b that I need to change, but I can't think what.

Thanks

Modem Recommendation

Please forgive me if there is a discussion elsewhere. I'm just about to move into a new house and am in the process of selecting an ISP. The generally accepted principle seems to be that ISP-provided modems are usually not the best. I'm looking for one that would serve me for any ISP and will also handle all of the static routing and IP blocking that one needs in this modern age to stay connected to the streaming services of choice.

Looking around, the ASUS DSL-AC52U looks to be a good compromise in terms of price and functionality. Would it do the job, please? Are there other alternatives? The only brand I've been advised to steer clear of is Netgear as their stuff tends to misbehave with my work VPN.
