Hello all,Sorting out electrical plans for our new house build - needing some help picking mainly the switch.Current house uses Fritz 7490 for net + voip and Fritz 7390 as a repeater for out back as the powerline adapters didn't work too well in this home (shoddy internal cabling perhaps). Looking to get rid of the repeater setup in the new home + wired ethernet for all PC's.Draft plan for new house:3 x data/phone in lounge (electrician said there MUST be 3 here)2 x data/phone in master (same as above - I don't even want a phone line here but they said it's a must)1 x data point in bed 2,3 and 4Each person has their own desktop switch already being used to "power" consoles, PC, chromecast, NAS etc which is why we have allowed for just 1 data point in the bedrooms. We'll be keeping the Fritz in the meantime for VOIP/modem but I do have 2 x Ubiquiti AC-Lites that I would like to use for the AP's (given through work).I suppose I'm looking for a switch with POE ports, but even so most of them only support 802.3af/at POE so was advised to purchase the Ubiquiti indoor gigabit adapter as well. How would it work if I decided not to buy the adapter and just use the included injectors?Anyone got any switch suggestions for me? The Ubiquiti ones that have support for 24V passive are quite pricey so looking for alternatives.Cheers allPlacements of points:

I'm no geek.... Internet Question
I have Vodafone Broadband (Fibre). I have the Vodafone issued router in the garage, had it 4 years. The internet on it has been crap for ages, When I connect via my cellphone, wife's cellphone, iPad I frequently get no internet access when WIFI is connected (PC has no problem). So I used a very old router as a wifi access point. Plugged that in at the lounge Ethernet port. That's worked for about 6 months but is slowly becoming a pain also, same issue. Turn it off and on and away we go again.I want to solve this now, the internet I believe is fine, it the age and crap quality of the 'free' routers supplied when you sign up I think.Ultimately my question is.I've gone onto PB's website I get 'modem' and 'routers' as two separate category options - what's the difference? - what do I need to replace what I have in the garage?Do I need to do anything so connect it to the internet once purchased it will it detect the internet somehow?(I'm no geek like I said)

Hey guys, I have a question, I was looking at the advanced setting in my network card and I see there is a setting for something that I know nothing about. It's Gigabit Lite option. What is this and what does it do?

Wifi Range Extender Data Use?
Hi. Recently our RBI data consumption has risen dramatically which I think may coincide with the addition of a Vonets wireless bridge to service a week spot where the TV is wired. Is it possible the range extender itself is burning data even though the PC that connects to it is "sleeping"?
TIA. Alan

Internet/Phone not working after touching ETP.
So out of curiosity of upgrading our home phone lines, I took a look at our ETP that's outside the garage. Took it out and put it back in. Didnt dismantle it, or cut any wires or whatever, but after that the internet speed dropped to 1mbps (originally 8~9 mbps). We had this speed about 4 years ago, and after installing a master splitter/filter, the increased drastically. I am not entirely sure why the speed dropped back after looking at it, perhaps faulty or loose wires. So I decided to reconnect the wires(exactly the way it was before), bought new gel 2way/3way wire connectors, and reconnected it.Now both phone and internet is faulty. Both of it doesnt seem to work. The master filter we had was a really old one that only has blue/white and orange/white.I ve been reading the forums a lot on installing a new master splitter, and it seems like the colour code was incorrectly installed from the first place. I ve bought a new master filter (orange/white, green/white, blue/white) and tried installing it, but our home wires seems to be slightly different from the ones that was mentioned online for people who has had a similar problem. Our ETP currently has 4 cables, 3 black, and 1 white.1st Black cable is rolled up and not used,2nd black cable consists pf 3 wires inside (yellow, brown ish, white),3rd black cable consists of 4 wires (Red,black, blue, white) Found the red/black rolled up and not used.White cable consists of 6 wires (red, blue, green, black, white, orange) So originally the technician installed the filter wiring like this: The Blue/White wires from the splitter was joined to the Blue/white wires to the 3rd black cable mentioned. (Blue-Blue), (white-White).[I read from posts that the Orange/white is connected to the line and not the blue/white, but this was how it was originally connected.] The orange wire from the splitter was connected to the white wire from the White cable. The White wire from the splitter was connected 3 way with the red wire from the white cable and to the yellow wire from the 2nd Black cable. Blue -> BlueWhite -> White Orange -> WhiteWhite -> Red/Yellow to 2 different cable. From reading different posts, I know some of the wiring contradicts how people connects the filter, I don't understand why it was working fine for years before I pulled it out for inspection. What my actual plan was to install a 3 way master splitter (green/white -> cat5e) and installing a CAT5e cable going into the garage so I can place my router there with cat5e wired straight to the router, rather than going through the phone lines as different phone jacks seems to give different speed. If someone could help me with this matter it'd be great. Thanks

Does a Spark ONT have an internal IP?
Bear with me here, this may be a silly question! :-D I'm currently buying and setting up some Ubiquiti gear for my new build (currently 2 x AC PRO's, the 8-port PoE switch and a Cloud Key). Long-term I plan on adding a USG to take over the firewall & router-function that will be carried out by the ONT, so my understanding is that I:- Configure the USG to run in bridge mode- Disable the routing aspects of the ONT (DHCP - I believe double-NAT is ok?)So the ONT effectively is then just a modem. If that's the case, and it's on the WAN side of the USG, how do I browse to it, should I need to trouble-shoot anything? Is is this done by Spark using it's public IP?

Asus RT-AC5300 WAN Reconnection Problems - Spark UFB
I recently bought a new Asus RT-AC5300 router (to replace the Huawei HG659b), and it works really well except for when I have to reboot the router and it can take anywhere from 10 - 120 minutes to get a WAN connection. VLAN tag is set to 10, and WAN connection type is set to PPPoE. I followed the UFB configuration settings at https://www.pbtech.co.nz/ASUSISPSettingsThe syslog shows:Aug 1 13:02:16 pppd[662]: Timeout waiting for PADO packetsAug 1 13:03:31 pppd[662]: Timeout waiting for PADO packetsAug 1 13:04:06 pppd[662]: Connected to 00:23:3e:85:ef:a0 via interface vlan10Aug 1 13:04:06 pppd[662]: Connect: ppp0 <--> vlan10Aug 1 13:04:36 pppd[662]: LCP: timeout sending Config-RequestsAug 1 13:04:36 pppd[662]: Connection terminated.Aug 1 13:04:37 pppd[662]: Modem hangupAug 1 13:05:22 pppd[662]: Timeout waiting for PADO packetsAug 1 13:06:37 pppd[662]: Timeout waiting for PADO packetsAug 1 13:07:52 pppd[662]: Timeout waiting for PADO packetsAug 1 13:09:07 pppd[662]: Timeout waiting for PADO packetsAug 1 13:10:22 pppd[662]: Timeout waiting for PADO packetsAug 1 13:10:22 pppd[662]: Connected to 00:23:3e:85:ef:a0 via interface vlan10Aug 1 13:10:22 pppd[662]: Connect: ppp0 <--> vlan10Aug 1 13:10:52 pppd[662]: LCP: timeout sending Config-RequestsAug 1 13:10:52 pppd[662]: Connection terminated.Aug 1 13:10:52 pppd[662]: Modem hangupAug 1 13:11:02 pppd[662]: Connected to 00:23:3e:85:ef:a0 via interface vlan10Aug 1 13:11:02 pppd[662]: Connect: ppp0 <--> vlan10Aug 1 13:11:32 pppd[662]: LCP: timeout sending Config-RequestsAug 1 13:11:32 pppd[662]: Connection terminated.Aug 1 13:11:32 pppd[662]: Modem hangupAug 1 13:11:42 pppd[662]: Connected to 00:23:3e:85:ef:a0 via interface vlan10Aug 1 13:11:42 pppd[662]: Connect: ppp0 <--> vlan10Aug 1 13:12:12 pppd[662]: LCP: timeout sending Config-RequestsAug 1 13:12:12 pppd[662]: Connection terminated.Aug 1 13:12:12 pppd[662]: Modem hangupAug 1 13:12:38 pppd[662]: Connected to 00:23:3e:85:ef:a0 via interface vlan10Aug 1 13:12:38 pppd[662]: Connect: ppp0 <--> vlan10Aug 1 13:13:08 pppd[662]: LCP: timeout sending Config-RequestsAug 1 13:13:08 pppd[662]: Connection terminated.Aug 1 13:13:08 pppd[662]: Modem hangupAug 1 13:13:53 pppd[662]: Timeout waiting for PADO packetsAug 1 13:13:53 pppd[662]: Connected to 00:23:3e:85:ef:a0 via interface vlan10Aug 1 13:13:53 pppd[662]: Connect: ppp0 <--> vlan10Aug 1 13:13:53 pppd[662]: PAP authentication succeededAs you can see, on this particular attempt it took about 10 minutes, but other times it can take a lot longer. Google seems to suggest it's a problem with the DHCP lease aggression setting trying to renew the WAN IP lease too many times within a short period, causing a temporary blacklist on my router's MAC address. https://www.snbforums.com/threads/so-what-is-the-point-of-aggressive-dhcp-query-frequency.11738/ & https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1011715/However, the DHCP Query Frequency setting isn't an available option that can be set once the WAN type is set to "PPPoE". It only appears under "Automatic IP".Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue? Surely, I'm not the only one with an Asus router and UFB that has this problem. I am having this issue with both the latest official and merlin firmware. I'm currently on Merlin 360.68.Thanks in advance.

Synology Diskstation internet connectivity problem
I just recently changed from Vodafone VDSL to Spark VDSL.I have a Synology Diskstation DS212j which connects to my ISP router via ethernet cable.I have connected the Diskstation to a LAN port in new Spark router, but I have lost internet connectivity for the Diskstation. I'm guessing it has something to do with the router IP address changing from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254, but am not sure how to rectify in either router or Diskstation settings?Any help greatly appreciated.

REGUS Serviced Office - Networking Nightmare
I've been in the new serviced office (REGUS) for two days and their networking is driving me mad.The single office has 8 RJ45 network ports. Each port has access to the internet but even though all 8 network port is on the same subnet, none of the computers, NAS or printers can access each other. Now I'm quite competent in the networking as I been doing this kind of thing for 20 years.I have never been so frustrated. If I want to get any kind of IT support it going to cost me $$.Also, my VoIP phones are not working correctly either, suffering from the one-way audio issue. They can hear me but I can't hear them. But I think this is a common problem with Serviced Offices as they block the VoIP traffic so you have to use their phone system. $$ So does anybody know how to set-up a local LAN network in a REGUS serviced office?

Huawei B315 4G Modem - Automated Reboot Script Example
I've been finding recently that I've have to routinely reboot my Huawei B315 fixed wireless modem/router, in order to get any reasonable performance out of it. By routinely I mean every 1-2 days.Anyway, I got tired of doing it manually via a web browser, so I wrote a PhantomJS script to automate the reboot. The script logs onto the web UI, and clicks through the reboot process.PhantomJS itself doesn't require much in the way of external dependencies, and runs headless in a CLI. Given that, it can be scheduled to run in a cron job every night, or whatever. I'm sharing it here in case anyone else wants an example (my JS is pretty rough btw, not my preferred scripting language):https://gist.github.com/jonathanhoskin/0bc11f55d0ec926c0a457d4110b1f46f PhantomJS:http://phantomjs.org/download.html Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions :-)

Thinking about the new home setup
So, I'm getting closer to settlement now and part of that is now thinking about what I want the place to look like from a connectivity point of view.I've stipulated what I need for each room and the lounge shall have two data points (one on each side) and each bedroom will have one. In hindsight, I wish had gotten more, but them is the breaks.Given the designs of the house the ONT + networking gear will all be in a cupboard by the front door, meaning that the AP in that area will be completely useless. However, I have been doing some reading and am a bit of a fan of the Ubiquiti gear (will keep the FritzBox as a router for the mean time with the idea of updating to an Edge Router at a later point in time).I intend on purchasing the following;2 x Ubiquiti UniFi Switch US-8, 8-Port Gigabit Managed Switch (I appreciate I don't need managed switches, but would likely need this to power the AP below?)2 x Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-IW, N150 (150Mbps) In-Wall Wireless Access PointHas anyone had any experience with the In-Wall Wireless AP's at all? I like the idea because then I can setup one in the lounge downstairs and the study upstairs and get decent coverage of the house (perhaps a 3rd one upstairs as well later on) I'm a bit of a newbie at this, so if anyone has any other thoughts, I'm interested to hear.

Port Forwarding to Nextcloud VM with HG659
HiI am trying to access my Nextcloud from outside my LAN (only tested with my phone on 4G using both the app and browser) but I cannot connect. I get an error saying connection could not be established. This is both with with my public ip and a domain name pointed at the public ip. I wanted to try out Nextcloud so I installed the official VM with VMWare player (the network adapter is in bridged mode). I installed it on a laptop which wirelessly connects to the HG659. During the install it automatically detected my LAN and assigned a local ip 192.168.1.X. With this IP I can access nextcloud from any device on my LAN. Despite this, my router did not automatically detect the VM. So I manually added the device using the MAC address from VMWare. I then forwarded port 443 to the VM by creating a new port mapping application (but I also tried the https preset). This did not work. I also tried disabling the firewalls on the host machine and the router but that also did not work so I turned them back on.Currently I am at a bit of a loss. I would appreciate any help.

Just got 200mbps fibre, but wireless signal is very poor with new modem, looking for suggestions...
Hi,I'm a bit of a networking noob, so please bare with me.I have an ASUS PCE-AC68 wireless adapter which is supposed to be excellent, I was getting a max signal with our old Vodafone ADSL modem, but now with the new Vodafone fibre modem, I am getting one bar on the wireless signal with download speeds heavily fluctuating. My room is upstairs, and the modem is downstairs in the living room which is 2 rooms away. The fibre modem was installed about 5m further away than the ADSL modem was in the living room. But I doubt this would make such a big difference though, so I'm guessing its the new modems fault. My wireless adapter antenna are probably around 15-20m away, with one floor and about 3 walls in the way.So my question is, what would be the most cost effective option to improve the modem wireless signal output? I'd prefer not to replace the modem if possible. Is there a good router I can connect with ethernet cable to the modem, which I can then connect to?Is this the best way of doing it? Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Router and Range Extension Advice for Spark MaxFibre
We currently have Spark MaxFibre and a network supplied Huawei HG659B which, while fine for ethernet, seems to have issues with WiFi range, speed and reliability.A test yesterday returned 338mbps down and 156mbps up while sitting directly in front of the router. I'm not too fussed about these speeds as I gather we should expect significant speed loss over WiFi. Trouble is the above is never consistent and somewhat understandably we get far worse speeds on the other side of our fairly small house. The other week while trying to troubleshoot with a Spark rep, I got the following results while directly in front of the router:- 88mbps both down and up on 2.4Ghz- 230 down and 270 up (higher up speeds than down) on 5GhzToday I am in my room on the other side of the house getting the following:- 1mbps down and 20mbps up (much higher up speeds than the appalling down speed) on 2.4Ghz- 170 down and 107 up on 5GhzThe Spark guy said there's nothing wrong from their end so our only solution is to buy new hardware. He kept mentioning a Netgear Nighthawk but wasn't specific about which one. I did a small amount of research and we bought a $350 Netgear Nighthawk D7000 V2 which only made our problems worse. Speeds were lower, range was worse and it would drop connection for extended periods completely at random. I'm not sure if it was faulty or simply incompatible but we have returned it for store credit. So my question is, what is most likely to fix our issues? Our main requirements are:- Range- Speed over WiFi- PriceWe don't really need any fancy features, just decent WiFi that makes it worth having a MaxFibre connection. I have looked at other routers (I believe we probably don't need a modem router and can just buy a router?) and mesh routers but must admit I don't really know what I am looking at.Options like Ubiquiti AmpliFi look nice but at $500 for the router and an extender plug, I would need to know it's going to work. Google WiFi looks great too but does it work with Spark? Could we just get a different, better router from another brand like ASUS?Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

UniFi devices transparently sharing a SSID
Hi, I'm sure I found this info previously on the UniFi support site somewhere but now can't find it...If you have a couple of UniFi UAP devices in the house, and you setup on the controller app a single WiFi network and add both devices to it, then WiFi clients on the network should transparently hand over between the access points? But I seem to recall there were some gotchas or compatibility issues - so in my case, I currently have one UAP AC LR and if I buy a second AP it has to be from a certain subset of their devices to play nicely and do the handovers transparently?Or can I use pretty much any one of their access points for the second one and it will just work? For instance does it matter if the second one is 2.4GHz only?ThanksJohnO [edit] oh, and one other thing: We have Spark VDSL and the Spark supplied Huawei VDSL Modem/Router. I keep hearing people mention issues about VLAN tagging and have no idea what that means - does it matter in the context above?

How do you connect Chorus ONT to Modem through ethernet patch panel?
My apartment has a Chorus ONT installed this week in bedroom 1. So I converted the telephone jacks in bedroom 1 & 2 which are daisy chained, into an ethernet extension (between bedroom 1 & 2). I connected an ethernet from the ONT to the jack in bed1 & an ethernet from the modem to jack in bed2 but the modem isn't detected by the ONT. However if I connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the jack in bed 1 & a laptop to jack in bed 2 I do get a network connection. So do I need a special ethernet cable for the ONT - Patch1 - Patch2 - Modem? Crossover or something?
