Friday talk - how edge router (or similar business grade) better?

Hello Geek fellows,

happy Friday.

a while ago, i took advise from fellows here that to get rid of my wifi extenders and replaced them with net gear orbi.

i'm current use netgear router + 3 x orbi.

the reason i keep the netgear router is orbi could not get full speed on its own. result from speedtest shown netgear router has 100m full speed, orbi only has 70m.

i'm thinking of changing the router since i have been having internet drop lately. (:( :( :( the internet is driving me mad.)

anyway back to the topic, to fellows who is using edgerouter or have experience with it , how is it (or similar business grade) better than others?

hope you guys have a awesome weekend

thanks,

Sam

PFSense IPv6 configuration questions (from ISP perspective)

Hi, all.

I finally managed to get IPv6 to work on my new PFSense firewall, but I don't entirely understand precisely how this works from a higher level ISP perspective.

For understanding, I am on VDSL so I'm using PPPoE.

My WAN interface has a link-local IPv6 address and my LAN interface has been assigned a public IPv6. I can ping this LAN interface (after opening a firewall rule to allow it) and everything seems dandy. But that seems strange.

Why do I not have an IP on my WAN interface?

And furthermore, it seems my DHCP6 server isn't doing anything, because it shows no leases when I look it up, but my devices on my LAN have IPv6 addresses too. Are these being assigned directly from the ISP or am I reading something wrong?

I have a good knowledge of IPv4, I work in an IT related role, but I want to delve into IPv6 to learn more about it.

Thanks.

New laptop = new wifi issues

Hey guys,

Wondering if anybody has any ideas on diagnosing/fixing this problem.

Just acquired a new laptop, Asus Zephyrus M, Windows 10 (https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKASU501001/ASUS-ROG-GM501GS-EI001T-GTX1070-Premium-Gaming-Lap). Adapter is an Intel Wireless AC 9560.

Having some issues connecting it to the wifi which is an Tp-link AC750 (https://www.tp-link.com/au/products/details/cat-9_Archer-C2.html). Firmware on the router, and drivers/Win 10 on the laptop are up to date.

When logging onto the 5ghz network, my laptop fails a variable number of times before eventually managing to log on - can take up to 4 attempts before success. Sometimes, the connection gets dropped randomly. This is not a problem i've had with any other laptop at home, or my Apple mobile devices which all log on smoothly. My flatmate's surface pro also connects smoothly. In addition, there are no problems at all logging onto the 2.4ghz network from the same router (completely different SSID though) which functions smoothly. Unfortunately, i've only had the laptop for a short time so i've not been able to log onto another router than my mums (which only runs a 2.4ghz network - works fine and smoothly)

I've tried

a) On the router, changing the 5ghz channel and channel width from auto to pre-selected channel and narrower widhts

b) Copying the settings from the 2.4ghz network to the 5ghz network

c) Changing channel width on the laptop

d) Assigning a manual IP on the router for this device

e) "Forgetting" the network, and relogging.

Also had a thorough browse on the internet about this....can't find any suggestions that I haven't already tried.

Just seeing if any clever person has any bright ideas?

PtMP Wireless

We seem to be experiencing a spike in crime, and two of my neighbours have independently asked me about setting up CCTV systems for them, or connecting cameras to my system. Having provided video to the police on four occasions in less than a year, having fewer systems seems with everything collated by one person seems like the best solution. Two sources is presently causing enough communication issues, four certainly won't be fun.

With that in mind, I am looking for a networking solution to connect their cameras. I've used Ubiquiti NanoBridge products in the past to bridge buildings, but am now looking for a point to multi-point solution that is reasonably priced.

For the remote properties, I am looking at using up to three cameras, an 802.3at injector, a 4-port PoE-powered PoE switch, and three cameras, with one port left for the wireless device (which ideally would also be 802.3af powered).

Does anyone have any recommendations for hardware that could achieve the desired result?

Using an Old Router to Extend your Wifi

New Broadband Router

When a shiny new Broadband Modem arived in the mail (NetComm Wifeless NF18ACV), I decided to use the old Broadband router(a NetComm NF4V) to extend my wifi Network to remote parts of the house where the Wifi signal was week. This document describes how to do this.

Broadband Router as Switch

The term "Router" is not an accurate description of a Broadband Router. A btroadband router actually contains three capabilities all rolled into one:

Broadband Modem

Switch

Wifi Access Point

The trick to setting up the old Router as a Wifi Extender was to disable Capability #1 above and basically just use the old Router as a Switch and Wifi Access Point. So how did I do this?

Step 1: Physical Connections

I connected my new NF18ACV Broadband Router to the new fibre connection point which is in the hall cupboard at the front of the house. I got the new Broadband router completely configured and working - including the Wifi and phone line.

I then connected a Powerline Adaptor to LAN Port 4 of the NF18ACV Broadband Router. I also plugged in another Powerline Adaptor in a remote part of the house (my Bedroom). Unfortunately, my house is not wired with CAT6 Cable and therfore the Powerline adaptors were a good second choice. I then paired up the Powerline adaptors using the WPS buttons on the front of the devices and then tested the connection using a Laptop connected via Ethernet Cable to the Powerline Adaptor in the Bedroom. All good.

Next I connected the Powerline adaptor in my Bedroom to the WAN port of the old NF4V Broadband router using an ethernet cable. I then connected a Laptop to LAN Port 4 on the back of the old NF4V using another ethernet cable.

Step 2: Disable all existing WAN Configurations

I then logged into my old NF4V using the url: http:192.168.1.1. The new NF18ACV Broadband Router uses http:192.168.20.1. My old NF4V had three existing WAN connections configured as shown in the screenshot below. I deleted all three.

Step 3 - Configure a Layer 2 Eth Interface

Next, configure a layer 2 interface only for eth4. eth4 corresponds to the WAN port on the back of the Router. Eth0 to eth3 corresponds to the LAN ports marked 1 to 4. This is confusing because the numbers don't match up. But eth0 is actaully the physical LAN port marked 1 on the back of the device.

Step 4 Configure a Layer 3 IP over Ethernet WAN connection

The next step is to configure a WAN Service as shown in the screenshots below. I am using OpenDNS for Family safety. These are IP-Addresses 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. I deactivated IPv6 so as not to confuse OpenDNS (and me).

Below, I just selected an IP-Address of 192.168.20.100. The new NetComm Wifeless NF18ACV that arrived in the mail uses the 192.168.20/24 VLAN. So I just picked a high IP-Address in this VLAN that was unlikely to be used. I really should now go into the Console for the new Router and set this IP as a static DHCP lease address and tie it to the MAC address of the old NPF4 router. However it works fine without doing this. I might run into trouble if I have lots of devices and all the IP-Addresses between 192.168.20.2 and 192.168.20.100 get used up - then I might get an IP-Address conflict.

You should enable NAT on the next screen as shown below. Click on next and then Apply/Save on the following screen.

I tried it without NAT - but could not get a connection. NAT is Network Address Translation.

You should then reboot the Router which you can do via the GUI or by toggling the power button on the Router.

It should now work. You will now have two Wifi Networks in your house both of which will work and both will use two VLANS: 192.168.20/24 and 192.168.1/24. The VLANS will be connected together.

There are undubtable other ways of getting the Same Result. For example, you could use Layer 2 bridging which would give you only one VLAN. This might be easier to manage - but I spent about 4 hours on this and could not get it working.

You could also try and setup the second modem using Wifi Bridging. This would effectly make the old modem into a Wifi Repeater. I did not try this method either. I had some unused Powerline adaptors, and I thought I would get better throughput if I used a physical connection - rather then trying to bridge over Wifi.

I am now getting about 93 Mbps download and 11 Mbps Upload using an ethernet cable and about 50/9 using Wifi on 2.4 GHz. The new NF18ACV adaptor has both 2.4 GHz and a 5GHz reception. 5GHz is supposed to be faster (but shorter range). I am supposed to have 20 MBps from Trustpower - so I sense another phone call is imminent.

Disabling ICMP / Pings. Why? Good or Bad

$

In a recent post I was told ICMP / Pings / Tracert packets were disabled by the ISP. I was told this is good practice.

iknow there are ways to attack ICMP, (e.g. SMURF) but if the ISP is routing those packets onto other servers, while disabling their servers from reposnding to the packets, are they not going to experience the same issues of DOS and data over load? Either they should disable ping packet routing (and not just reposnse) or enable the lot surely. Any thoughts?

There are many valid reasons for deprotization of ICMP, just as there are for no responding at all.

How it looks on tools such as pingplotter is a unfortunate side-affect however, even pingplotter supports alternative methods such as unix style (udp) pings that will preform differently.

Wireless solution between ONT and modem. Doable? Recommendation?

Due to some technical limitations, it's quite challenging to run a physical cable between our soon-to-be-installed ONT and the modem. A quick research online didn't tell me much (it's uncommon issue, I reckon), apart from running a pair of powerlines adapters.

Is there any smart option out there? Wifi to ethernet adapters?

Thanks in advance for your time and advice.

Zyxel vmg8324-b10a router loses settings after reboot

It's a NOW supplied VDSL router from a few years ago, but recently I wanted to setup some reserved IP addresses and custom DNS, I called up NOW and got the router password and set it up and everything worked fine. But each time I restart the modem/router (even using the built-in restart in the routers web GUI) it loses all my settings, including the login password NOW had set.

So each time there is a power cut, or I restart it I have to call up NOW to get the password changed again and re-setup the DNS and reserved IPs.

Any ideas why it's not holding my changes? (NOW doesn't know, and wants to sell us a new VDSL modem/router, I'll probably source my own)

PS, I've tried holding the reset button on the router and it'll reset, but doesn't fix the issue.

I wonder how CVE-2018-5390 Linux kernel versions 4.9+ vulnerability would affect Linux-based consumer-grade routers in the wild... Not sure how many (if any) models are running affected version - but if any then I would be afraid.

@michaelmurfy do you know?

Configuration of DrayTek v130 and MikroTik RB951G-2HnD for VDSL

Hi guys, the plan is to use a DrayTek v130 in bridge mode for the VDSL service, with a MikroTik RB951G-2HnD behind it providing the firewall/pppoe dialer etc.

Unfortunately the Mikrotik can't connect.

The DrayTek when acting as a the PPPOE dialer connects successfully, so it's not the VDSL connection itself.

The configuration of the DrayTek (192.168.0.254) is as follows (taken from the guides I found online)

With the Mikrotik config (in its default 192.168.88.1 config for the moment is) as follows:

The firewall rules (not pictured) will move from the default connection to the PPPOE connection.

Does this look correct? Another guide referenced using just the PPPOE pass-through feature and disabling MPoA.

This is the first time I've had to deal with VDSL and a MikroTik. I've only used them on fibre connections.

Spark hg659b - Can't Forward port 1701

Hi there

I am trying to set up a VPN server on my Synology NAS using L2TP/IPSec. Apparently to get this to work I need to forward ports 1701, 500, and 4500 (UDP)

The HG659B refuses to allow me to forward port 1701. "The external port cannot be 7547,514,68,53,546,500,1701,8443,8080,990,5060,28090,50000-50020."

(Note the error message also mentions 500, but this can be forwarded with a built-in mapping).

Couple of questions:

1) Any idea why?

2) Any way around it?

There are no options to change the ports being used in the VPN Server settings.

Thanks!

Brett

Outsource the routing function of NF18ACV to an Edgerouter Lite - how?

I got a Netcomm NF18ACV from Slingshot with landline function enabled and an Edgerouter Lite.

If I was to use the routing function of my Edgerouter while keeping the NF18ACV for switching and VOIP, can someone tell me how to set up the NF18ACV modem?

* the Edgerouter is working fine by itself even with the NF18ACV behind it as a switch, but the telephone port isn't working in this setup.

Many thanks

Home network set up and bridging routers

I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to networking and would be very grateful for some advice, please.

I've just moved into a new house which has UFB from 2degrees. They have supplied a very nice Fritzbox 7560 with it. The ONT is in the garage with ethernet cable running from there to four of the rooms. It looks as if the previous owners had their router in there. However, we would rather have the router in the lounge, which is a more central location for the wifi and for the landline connection into it. Also, we would like to block/static route the Google DNS IPs to continue to parallel import certain stuff.

My thought would be to get a non-wifi router that handles static routes etc to put in the garage to handle the distribution around the house and the plug the Fritzbox into one of its ports that runs into the lounge. There are some questions around that:

Would that actually work?

Can I still run the landline off the Fritzbox if it has been bridged?

What would be the best non-wifi router to get that is generally available (from PB Tech for example, if that's not heresy to suggest)?

If I can't run the landline a bridged Fritzbox, what wifi router would be recommended?

How do I bridge routers?

Many thanks

Yagi AY12 Setup

Hey all,

I am wondering what is needed to setup the AY12, we upgraded from the ANT-205 external antenna to the AY12. I have plugged the antenna into the Huawei B525s. With the AY12 we were getting low 4G and were told by FarmsideNZ that upgrading to the AY12 would get solid 4g. However now that I switched there is no service whatsoever, cellutronics Wanaka said we wouldn't need any other pieces of kit so I feel I've just done it wrong. Anyone know how the correct setup is done, or if there's another thing I need?

Thanks,

Hamish

setting up GWN7000 on 2degrees fibre

Ok what am I doing wrong here? I'm sure it's blatantly obvious to somebody more skilled than I. I tried putting in the 2degrees IPv4 DNS but that didn't help. I deselected the IPv6, didn't help. The connection via the Fritzbox is perfectly fine but I can't figure out this GWN7000.

Fritz_fon charging bases

Seems my last one from the 3 handsets I got when snap was clearing them out from just before their rebrand has died again, and the metal contacts are not moving smoothly in the recess despite my best efforts to bend them back into place.

Looking online this seems to be common and they released a different base that apparantly solved the problem.

Did anyone ever get theirs swapped out under warranty? I parted ways with snap soon after getting these so dont really have any billing arrangement with them now.

Otherwise know where to get new bases locally? ebay has some but that will end up costing more than I want to invest into a seldom used landline number.

ASUS AC68U (RT-AC1900P) - with merlin - error in logs

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone could help with the following error in my logs:

dnsmasq-dhcp[9432]: not giving name Apple-TV4 to the DHCP lease of 192.168.1.241 because the name exists in /etc/hosts.dnsmasq with address 192.168.1.243

It's happening with another wireless device as well.

I've manually assigned the ATV4 the IP of 192.168.1.241 in the router by turning on the MAC and IP address binding but still get this error.

I've only noticed it in the last few updates with Merlin but for some reason can't post on the SNB forums at present.

I did change the device from being wired cat6 to go wireless via 5GHz as it's faster for this device so not sure if something went wrong after that switch or if it was there previous to that.
