Unmanaged switch into Powerline adapter

$

Hi all :)

I have a setup that looks like this currently:

VDSL Router (plus wifi) > Powerline > PC

I would like to add another PC via the Powerline, like this:

VDSL Router (plus wifi) > Powerline > Unmanaged switch > PCs

Will this work ok? I have done research that suggests it'll be fine, but wondered if anyone else had done this.

Cheers!

Building new house: network advice needed please

Hi folks,

I've never posted in this fine forum, but I've certainly browsed it a lot from time to time.

I'm about to start building a new house in February and have been doing some thinking about our home network.

I have VERY little networking experience but I want to ensure we get a good, future-proof setup in our new home.

We will wire for Ethernet (Cat 6) and have fibre installed.

There will be a large central utility cupboard housing the hot water cylinder and ventilation system, and I'm thinking it would make sense to put the network distribution cabinet in there too, as it should allow for good wireless signal around the house (approx 200m2, incl. double garage).

I guess I'm looking for advice on how to best go about setting the cabinet and network up (I like stuff to be neat and tidy). I also have a NAS and I'm not sure whether that needs to go into/near the cabinet or whether I could plug it into an outlet somewhere else in the house.

About the only thing I'm sure about at this point is that I need a plastic cabinet, as metal ones are no good for wifi signal!

Any advice much appreciated. Cheers

Does this home network cabinet install look right?

My parents are getting a new star network installed in their new house. It has a lot of ethernet cabling to future proof it. This is what the electrician has done so far. I am wondering though whether they have used the wrong components to connect the Ethernet cables to. It looks like they have used these Hills Home Hub HTM-408S Telephone Modules to connect the ethernet cables to https://www.hills.co.nz/p/S2120#gref, so their aren't many outputs. Shouldn't they be using something like this https://www.ryve.com.au/shop/categories/network-wifi/hills-hdm-808-data-patch-module/ so there is a connector for each wire? The box also does seem quite small for what is going in it and we did comment to the electrician that it looked too small . The box contains the ONT and the main spark modem/router

PC No longer accessible on network

Hi, we have a small business with 3 PC's (All Win-7) on a local network.

Yesterday, after a restart, one of the PC's could no longer be accessed by the others. It still appears in the Network list but any attempt to connect results in a "Windows cannot access \\OFFICE-PC" alert. This includes error code 0x80070035 "the network path cannot be found."

- The offending PC has full access to the internet/network

- The offending PC can connect to the other two PC's ok

- The offending PC network path is confirmed as \\OFFICE-PC

- I have used different network cables and ports on the switch

Any ideas from those with more knowledge than me? (not a high bar )

thanks

What do others think about this switch? Is it TP-Link?

I bought this switch on Aliexpress. If you scroll down to the product details, you see under Item Specifics that the brand is TP-Link. I had doubts when I bought it. There is nothing on it that suggests TP Link and it doesn't look like any other TP Link switch I have ever seen. But it didn't cost much and I'm not really that bothered.

Now that I have received it, I am more convinced than ever that it is not TP-Link, but I can't be completely sure. Maybe they also sell stuff that is generically branded.

I haven't actually tried the switch yet. I will install it later. I am not questioning the quality of it or whether it works or not, just the fact that it is sold as TP-Link. It actually looks better than other cheap stuff I have had. It even comes with a good, solid AC plug adaptor. But nowhere does TP-Link appear on the packaging or the brief user manual. So what do others think? I would be interested to know.

Improving my Wifi situation... Better wifi router vs Mesh solution

$

I've been doing some reading and haven't really found an answer to ny question, but I have found a number of people steering clear of Mesh solutions.

I live in an three storey unit, I'm on the second floor. I am flatting with two others and running a cable is not an option to the second or third floor sadly. (not my house, not my choice!)

Our current network is;

Router: NF18ACVWifi: aforementioned NF18ACV and a wifi extender on third floor (netgear something).Connection: gigabit/Slingshot.

Coverage in my room is pretty bad being about 10 meters from the router, 1 floor above. We had an occasion the other night where I was downloading something on my computer, barely getting 2-3MB/s and my flatmate upstairs came down and said he couldn't game, presumably because my weak Wifi connection was sucking priority from the wifi extender than he runs from.

So ideally I'd like to improve my wifi coverage to my room - our gigabit connection is most definitely not the bottle neck here, but the wifi is.

I've considered getting a Mesh wifi solution (1 hub + 1 satellite), but have heard throughout isn't the best.the other option, is purchase a decent Wifi access point that is better than the NF18ACV and place it in the same location.

What would be the best option here? I'd like to maximise my ability to use the gigabit connection (but of course understand than gigabit over wifi is a unicorn). I'm not particularly concerned if I buy a router that only I end up being connected to (or if it makes the network a bit of a mess), but just need something that will work and improve the 1 bar signal issue I have and not cause issues for the wifi extender upstairs.

Having to try and explain the benefits of purchasing networking gear to my flat is not really an option.. not going there again!

Best way to control kids' internet access?

$

We've got two boys who have the typical young person addiction to using devices (usually iPads, sometimes phones or Android tablet). I'm looking for a technical solution to control their access to the internet (please no comments re teaching the kids good practices; I get all that, and try to do this, but sometimes the ability to use a blanket control is appropriate!).

I know I can elect to limit access at the router level, but that's a hassle as the interfaces aren't user-friendly or quick to use, and we have two different brands of routers so this can't be done without making adjustments on both devices. Similarly, neither have an app available (which some models of routers seem to work with).

There are parental control apps I'm aware of, but I'm not keen on the subscription model some use (eg Our Pact) nor convinced at handing over money to purchase an app when not 100% sure it'll do the trick.

So, has anyone got any suggestions as to the best way to restricting internet access to specific devices, ideally from a simple phone- or tablet-based interface?

Thanks for any ideas.

Probably looking at @Hio77, but keen to hear others thoughts.

Chucked a new VDSL connection for a custom, on a POTS line, filter installed.

So it's rocking it hard on a 17a profile at 110Mbps down, but is "unstable" in Chorus' words and also from our own monitoring via SNMP. I've requested we pull it back to a 9b profile, but wondering if there is a better option. Obviously could just simply be a bad line, so no amount of profile changing will help. But from experience, what do people reckon?

Edit: dam, tables didn't come out properly lol

AP Isolation stops Chromecasts form operating on Spark Huawei b315s-607 modem router wap

It appears that some change to Spark's wireless modem router (the rural broadband offering), now disables Chromecast devices from talking to eachother via the Google Home app.

I have a customer with two of the newer (round) Chromecasts that used to work fine with the same modem in the near past.

Despite resetting everything and then doing it all again while on the phone with Google's Chromecast help person, I have had to admit defeat!

She agreed that it is the "AP Isolation" setting that needs to be disabled. (also known as 'Client Isolation' or 'Guest Mode')

Google was willing to ring Huawei to get it sorted (ambitious!), as Huawei warn you in their introductory support phone message that modems are configured by the retailers (such as Spark),

Spark, in turn was only able to send me the generic How-to documentation - which confirmed that I had been unable to find this setting in their firmware on this modem - as its not there!

Solutions:

Go back to copper based ADSL: No

Get Spark to change their firmware: unlikely

Add an additional wifi access point for the home setup...

Any other ideas?

TIA

Need help with wiring the entire home

Hi, I am quite new to this forum and still learning the basics of networking.

I have reasonably new house which has a "network box" in the garage and my entire house is wired with LAN cables to a "CAT port" to a wall.

We are using SPARK as our ISP.

Our current set up is that we have the fibre network to the ONT (huawei unit) that attaches to one of the LAN cable which is connected to CAT port in one of our room, which has a wireless router attached.

Due to number of growing network devices that is clogging up the WIFI, we were hoping to have wired internet available to all of our "CAT port", so that we can have wired network to some of our big devices (TVs, 2 computers)

I have tried attaching the LAN directly to the ONT and it didn't work.

Dear experts what do I need to do to achieve this.

Regards

John

I have just purchased a new router and I am having trouble getting it set up. I have purchased an ASUS RT-AC5300 router, but I am having issues getting it connected to my Fibre connection. My internet service provider is Orcon, I have done my own research and after few hours still have had no luck. I don't understand too much about networking but I definitely know how to folllow instructions, all of which I've found so far have not worked. Could somebody please help me?

Fritzbox 7490 5-Ghz issue; help please

My Fritz!OS version is 07.01.

On the Wireless > Radio Channel tab, when I select the Adjust radio channel settings option, the 5-Ghz frequency channel is disabled and I can't see where to assign a different SSID to the 5Ghz channel.

Anyone here have the same router and can verify if 5-Ghz works please?

HELP- Issues setting up my 2nd FritzBox 7490 Refurbished as access point - wifi is not working/connecting. LAN works though

I have already tried to disable the wifi on my main router and still not working. Tried to disable the AP wifi leaving the Main one and still not connecting. Not sure if @freitasm or @2degreesCare and @NickMack is able to help me out :D.

So the devices I have in my house is:

1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 MAIN

1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 Refurbished (will be using this one as access point)

1 x ONT

Connection process-

1. One Ethernet cable is plugged into the ONT port 1 slot. The other end of the same Ethernet cable is then plugged into the LAN 1 port slot of the "1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 MAIN". This setup is to ensure a fibre internet connection.

I then for the "1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 Refurbished" I did all your suggested configuration onto my router via computer pc before plugging it into the "1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 MAIN".

2. - I then grabbed another Ethernet cable and connect/plugged one end to the LAN 4 of the "1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 MAIN". The other end of the same ethernet cable, I connect it to the LAN1 of the Access point (1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 Refurbished).

* Configurations done to the "1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 Refurbished" were:

Setup - select country etc

Made sure to apply the "2degrees - Performance on faster plans - Tips & Tricks" to the "1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 Refurbished"

Updated firmware

Set it to IP Client mode

Make sure both 2.4ghz and 5ghz SSID is the SAME as the 1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 MAINSet the wifi channel for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz to a different channel. What I mean by this is I made sure the wifi channels for the "1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 Refurbished" were different to the 1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 MAIN. That way no interference would occur.

DISABLED DHCP by following: "

Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.

Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.

Click on the "Network Settings" tab.

Click the "IPv4 Addresses" button. "

I remember hearing from somewhere that I should also do the:-

-You need to disable most of the features (ie DHCP, firewall etc)

- Also don't plug the LAN cable into the WAN port of the access point, it needs to be in one of the LAN ports.

- Change the access points IP address to something different than the main router (Really unsure how to do this..teach me please thanks).

So yeah, this is what I have done. Please spare a moment to read and let me know what else is missing?

Oh and can someone tell me what values do i need to put in for this setting? Screenshot: https://unsee.cc/d3e49e85/

- I notice that I am unable to NOW access the 1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 Refurbished (AP) Unless I use the emergency IP address http://169.254.1.1

Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.

Mike.

Hello All

I currently am having problems loading Youtube (any google service), facebook and Netflix (will load slowly and then buffer to 98% and stop), for about a week now.

Everything else loads fine and no problems downloading/uploading, Playing games or browsing sites like reddit, outlook or geekzone.

I have tried all my browsers (chrome, edge and firefox) and none load them,

Tried changing IP address and DNS, restarting router and reinstalling windows. I have looked up almost everywhere and cannot seem to find an answer. Any help? It is driving me nuts.

UniFi Causing issues with switch

So I have a UniFi AC AP which most of the time works perfectly.

Twice now I have had issues where when the switch it's plugged into, basically goes crazy and there is massive packet loss to anything plugged into the same switch.

The first time I ended up doing quite a lot of troubleshooting over a weekend including replacing the switch which didn't help, before realizing it was the UniFi, unplugged it, network went back to normal, plugged it in, went crazy.

I went to work as ran out of time to troubleshoot and got home and it was working fine.

Got back from Holiday yesterday and same thing, network was unresponsive (though wireless was working fine!). Umplugged WAP and Network Fine. Factory reset and firmware updated, and seems fine now, but I am concerned this will happen again.

Anyone with UBNT experience noticed or seen this before?

Unifi USG Firewall Rules - blocking devices from internet

$

I've followed https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Routing-Switching/USG-How-to-block-internet-access-for-a-single-... and have a group for insecure devices that are blocked from the internet.

I can tell they're blocked as I'll go to their apps and they wont show up, or my camera will stop sending out ios notifications.

The only way I can get it to work is to put it at the very top of the LAN IN list:

The rule is set up as:

Before Predefined RulesDropNew, Established, RelatedSource - InsecureDevices GroupSource Port : Any

Destination: Any

Destination Port: Any

If I move that rule to anywhere other than the very top, it stops working, as in I see traffic coming out from the insecure devices (but then my vpn access works)

But with it in this configuration the LAN to insecure access is working. But any traffic from my VPN LAN (192.168.50.x) seems to fail to get to the insecure devices which are in my regular lan (192.168.10.x)

I did try an explicit 192.168.50.x rule to InsecureGroup Accept. But that didn't seem to help either.

VDSL Master Splitter/Filter?

Hi team,

After some help as have been battling this issue for the longest time and nobody can give a straight answer and google isn't helping.

We were with Vodafone VDSL, our internet kept dropping out intermittently and connection wasn't the best at times. Vodafone refused to look into or help so we switched to 2 Degrees. Still had the same issue but 2 Degrees at least looked into the problems for us and were fantastic to deal with. They ended up sending a Chorus technician out who looked at the phone jack on the wall and said he didn't think the house was wired for VDSL and we'd need a master splitter/filter installed which our provider could arrange. So we rung 2 Degrees about it and they said an electrician would need to do this. We've temporarily downgraded to ADSL as I work from home and couldn't work with VDSL dropping out all the time, and have had no more dropout issues but the slow speeds are killing me.

Have spoken to an electrician who has said that you can buy a splitter which plugs into the wall socket then your modem plugs into that which is apparently an inline splitter, or they could install one for around $100 + gst.

Looking on google I can't for the life of me figure out what an inline splitter is or where we would get one, or know for sure if it will help with the problem. And not sure if this is different from what the electrician would install for $100.

So I thought it might be worth posting here for some guidance. We've been battling this since we moved into this house (nearly two years ago)

We're on naked broadband, with no home phone or sky etc plugged in. Only one wall socket in the house to plug modem into. It's an older country type home so wouldn't surprise me if it has rubbish wiring. And we also aren't able to get fibre yet at our address unfortunately.

Thanks in advance!

Stacey

Synology NAS disappears from Network

$

Folks. Hopefully correct forum as its network related. If it belongs in the Windows forum then please move or let me know. This happened about 6 months ago and I can't remember how or indeed if I fixed it or it just came right.

Setup consists of my main desktop, a home theatre PC in another room (INTEL NUC) and my Synology NAS which is used to feed content to the HTPC in the main living room.

On my desktop PC, under windows explorer I have the network icon and this generally shows my desktop, the HTPC and the NAS. The NAS and the HTPC are pretty much always on. The desktop gets powered down daily.

I can access the NAS folders, swap files in and out of it by clicking the icon under network etc

Last night I fixed some windows update patches on the HTPC and rebooted it. Then noticed after doing that the NAS disappeared from my network.

I can still access it using the main web browser. I can also type in \\synology in windows explorer and it pops back up but i have to do that each time i login.

Did some reading thinking it was master browser issues, followed instructions and set the NAS to be local master browser. Turned everything off, rebooted etc but no change.

Have also tried various boot up sequences, NAS first, desktop etc..HTPC then NAS etc but no difference.

What have I done and what is the easiest way to fix it.

Cheers for the help. Win 7 build
