Huawei HG659 firmware

Hi,

I have a HG659 on VDSL. The VOIP doesn't work. This thread here outlines the exact scenario and symptoms, so 99.9% sure it's this issue.

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=43&topicid=156054

My firmware is V100R001C297B011 (Skinny/BigPipe), I've also tried V100R001C227B011 (Spark), but as both of those are B011 the issue exists.

Apparently Vodafone fixed this in their firmware, but when I flash it with vf firmware (V100R001C206B026) the device bricks.

I reached out to Skinny support. They said tough biscuits. Can't believe this hasn't been fixed after 5 years.....

Is there a kind soul out there hoarding firmware for the HG659 (hardware revision b) which would like to share some?

Is Shielded Wiring Necessary for Cambium APs?

Ubiquiti's manual for the AP AC Pro demanded shielded cables, but I can't seem to find anything about that in Cambium's manuals. The AP in question is the indoor e600. Can I use un-shielded CAT6?

Unifi USG fibreX connection issue

I recently brought a unifi USG, cloud key, poe switch, AP and have Vodafone's fibreX internet at home. I'm struggling getting it connected to the internet..

I plugging the USG in and didn't have access to the internet so assumed that needed to set VLAN 10

I searched around and followed these steps after ssh to the USG

configure

edit interfaces ethernet eth0

delete address

delete firewall

set vif 10 address dhcp

set vif 10 firewall in name WAN_IN

set vif 10 firewall local name WAN_LOCAL

commit

save

exit

It then picked up an IP address which is progress but I still wasn't connected to the internet. I couldn't ping anything for example. Rebooted modem, USG, checked all the patch leads etc..

I'm a bit stumped here.. I can only assume I don't have the correct settings on the USG.

Any ideas anyone?

Replacement router for Pace Gateway V5542 on Spark Fibre 100/20 - Huawei HG659B was worse!

Having thoroughly read Michael Murphy's guide to routers, I am still unsure what to do. Essentially I want a robust router without CLI, and don't really need it to have wifi.

Our current setup is an Airport Extreme and 2 Airport Expresses (in bridge mode) handling AP duty connected via Ethernet back to the Pace Gateway (with Wifi turned off) . I can tell via Netspot app that we have excellent WiFi coverage. I have had multiple wired APs due to old house with lathe and plaster being very unfriendly towards wifi. We have been having lots of slowdowns over the last 6 months where things take an age to start loading, although once videos are streaming technology, we rarely if ever have a problem with buffering. So I started to think that the Pace Gateway just could handle all the different requests, and that was the problem. So I ordered a Spark Huawei HG659b, thinking that a modern Spark router would solve it. But that was even worse - devices stopped being able to even find the internet at all. Then I looked at total connected devices in our house, and it is hovering up around 30! So even though i was using the Huawei with Wifi turned off, it felt like the Huawei couldnt handle the number of devices and was dropping them. I subsequently understand that the HG659B has a 32 device limit. With the Pace Gateway back in the circuit, devices don't get dropped off anymore, but I am back to the same issue that we have frequent slowdown at initiating web page connections, , an age to load things, app startup on phones etc.

Of course it could be that the Airports are the issue, but as I say - Wifi throughout is really strong, and I remain suspicious that the Pace Gateway is at Fault. I know I couldn't handle a router with a CLI. Although I don't need a router with Wifi, all the non-wifi ones seem very technical. Would one of either the Asus AC68U, Netgear R7000 or Ubiquiti Amplifi devices solve the issues I describe? I would aim to put them in the circuit with Wifi disabled, because I am primarily looking for strong routing ability, but as I say, I am trying to avoid a device that requires me to use a CLI, and I can't seem to find a high quality non-wifi router that doesn't have a CLI.

Thanks for any helpful advice. I will probably be told to ditch the Airports I know, but I also use them as Airplay devices, and have a housewide Dual band single SSID setup, , loads of Apple devices, Apple TVs etc so keen to keep if possible!

Cambium E600 Basic Setup

The "Quick Start menu" mentioned in the quick start guide does not exist, so I'm muddling through this UI. Have a single E600 with an ER-L as my router. Not trying to do anything fancy, just set it up as a basic AP. So far on the E600 I have:

Misc:- Installed the latest firmware

System Menu:- Set country code to NZ- Set admin password

WLAN Menu:- Added a WLAN (ID 1)- Set SSID- Set Security to: WPA2 Pre-shared Key- Set Wi-Fi passphrase

Is there anything else I need to configure?

Thanks.

Mesh, extender or powerline adapters

Finding connection in our new place to be a problem as it's 2 stories! Though not an issue for myself as the router and connection both come into the house through my office, the rest of the flatties are complaining about not having a reliable connection for their own computers/devices. One of them said he might get a powerline adapter but I thought i'd ask people here whether that is worth, or if simply all chipping in and buying a cheap mesh system would be better.

I'm sure someone has asked this before but please look at it from the point of view of a bunch of young twenty somethings allergic to spending money =P

5GHz through the ceiling ?

Hi there,

How well would a 5GHz access point work for devices if the AP is in the roof space ? Is a layer of plaster and wood going to degrade the signal much ?

I'm looking to do a mesh setup but hide the APs away in the roof space.

Thanks,.

Wifi/Modem setup - replace HG659 for small business

Hey team,

My workplace has 3 locations, one of them being the 'main' store.

It has a VDSL connection for the non trading connection (separate connection for internet and all main trading activities). This currently has the HG659 serving it.

We have 3 wifi points currently, a random Ubiquiti unit that was existing when I started (some random one that looks like its meant to be outside on a pole. A cisco unit that was factory reset from the old customer wifi, and a random old wifi router set with DHCP off as a random AP upstairs. The area is quite large to cover downstairs, plus a small upstairs area

We also use the guest wifi on the HG659 for managers free wifi (isolated from the main network)

Currently goes VDSL -> HG659 -> 16 Port switch -> Lan devices/WiFi AP's

I think we're starting to max out the HG659 device limit, when I checked today it said 30 devices on it and the owners phone wouldn't connect to wifi (didn't investigate as it happened earlier, I just heard about it).

Without spending a bomb, as this is for back office use, printers, CCTV, training tablets, manager free wifi, owner wifi, what sort of devices would everyone recommend? I've been looking at Unifi AP's and they look okay for the price, but to replace the HG659 I have zero idea.

Look forward to some ideas so that I can pitch to the boss :)

USG - setting MTU for Spark Fibre

I'm trying to configure the USG to use mtu 1500 for spark fibre.

pppoe mtu to be 1500

vif 10 mtu to be 1500

eth0 mtu to be 1508

Here is my config.gateway.json. It seems like valid JSON code but i am unable to connect to the internet with this config. Can someone help me figure out what is wrong with my config code

{ "interfaces": { "ethernet": { "eth0": { "vif": { "10": { "mtu": "1508", "pppoe": { "2": { "mtu": "1500" } } } } } }}}

Slingshot Netcomm NF18ACV - bridge mode possible?

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has setup a Slingshot supplied NF18ACV in bridge mode (for VDSL).I know the NF4V are pretty easy - are these similar/the same? Slingshot don't do anything silly with the firmware?

And I think slingshot require the correct usename and password for PPPoE authentication?

Thanks heaps!

Where to begin to restore (switch?) internet connectivity to home office

Please forgive me in advance for my lack of knowledge in this area. I am seeking the helpful advice of someone more network savvy than myself.

So the problem I am facing is this:I have shifted into what used to be a home office building (5+ years ago with previous landlords), which certainly had internet to it. This has 20+ ethernet/telephone? ports in the walls, however no connectivity. I believe the landlord has a VDSL internet connection however the building I am in is too far for wifi (something I'm working on seperately).

Digging deeper I find that where a switch once would have been has been totally ripped out by the previous owners, see below:

https://imgur.com/a/hbDJXx2

Above this switch is an alarm system box.

I have access to a 24 plug unmanaged switch, but obviously, there is no way to connect anything as the cords from the previous unit have been broken and taped off it seems.

Any advice on where to start with a solution would be much appreciated, I am calling spark this arvo to see if they have a record of what has happened. I'm pretty keen to find a solution myself and not afraid of getting my hands dirty to fix it, so any starting point would be super helpful :)

Thank you!

Odd UniFi UAP behaviour

$

Hi, I have a network here at work it has a modest number of UniFi AC-Lites and AC-LR APs on it. We also have a cupboard full of older UAP's, the originals.

The network has two SSID's both on seperate vlans, and the AC WAPs work fine, no problems.

But the issue is the UAP's, if I have more than one SSID on them, then the clients will connect, then disconnect after about 10sec and will drift off to a distant AP that is too weak to provide reliable service. If I have just a singe SSID on these older WAPs the client will happily connect and remain so indefinitely with good reliability. Current firmware is 4.0.14.9736, controller is 5.10.17

Anyone else seen this odd behaviour?

Cheers

Cyril

Is anyone able to confirm what the long vertical black and white component is on the right of this photo, with the red arrow on it? I am guessing it is a patch panel that is still to have cables installed, but just want to check. TIA

Google wifi app on new device

$

I've tried the google wifi help community on this but the only advice for all of the same or similar questions is 'is the new device on the same google account?' and there is never anything further.

I got a new phone a couple of weeks ago and just had cause to use the google wifi app for the first time since. So I downloaded it and tried to get it to recognise my google wifi. It only goes in to setup mode, there is no option for finding an existing google wifi network. In set up mode I've been down to the room with the ethernet connection and at one point touched the phone to the puck.

The app mentions the light has to be flashing, so I power cycled everything and tried to get it to pick up when the puck was flashing but it wouldn't.

Has anyone successfully set the app up on a new device when it's already set up on an existing device? If so, how? Will it help if I uninstall it on the existing device (I can't really thing why given I still won't be setting up from new)? I really don't wan to have to keep my iPad going for this one app and it really seems like it should be able to be used on a 2nd device with the same user. Everything else about it is so nice and easy.

Outsource the routing function of NF18ACV to an Edgerouter Lite - how?

I got a Netcomm NF18ACV from Slingshot with landline function enabled and an Edgerouter Lite.

If I was to use the routing function of my Edgerouter while keeping the NF18ACV for switching and VOIP, can someone tell me how to set up the NF18ACV modem?

* the Edgerouter is working fine by itself even with the NF18ACV behind it as a switch, but the telephone port isn't working in this setup.

Many thanks

Draytek DV130 bridging + admin

Is there a way to put a DV130 on an IP address and VLAN tag this so I can access the DV130 through my "mamagement vlan"?

Setup is bridging VDSL to Mikrotik. Mikrotik WAN port has an IP address assigned to it (ie: not PPPoE)

Have Googled and all the examples I could find were tangibly different from what I am doing.

Speed drop question

Just had fibre installed and speed at the modem is 927/500 which has is fairly decent.

I have a run of Cat 6 coming out of the modem to a wall plate where one of my google wifi points is installed.

Speed at this point is 527/400.

That is the speed the wifi point is showing, not the speed it is distributing wifi at.

So there seems to be quite a big drop between the modem and first wifi point. Just wondering if this is to be expected or if I should be checking the wall plate connection?
