Home networking - powerline vs wifi to ethernet bridge? Ethernet switch vs router vs splitter vs... ?

Hi all, First post!

Come to my limit with google searches... I can read the product numbers but not sure what all the terms mean! Would much appreciate any advice...

We have fibre coming through a Calix T072G HGU ONT with 4 GB ethernet ports. This is wired to a FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7360 modem/router which has at least 2 GB ports, think the others might be 10/100.These are in the living room.

I have a WD My Cloud Mirror Gen 2 (I know these don't have the best reputation) which I want to set up in my home office downstairs so I can have an Ethernet connection to my laptop (through a dock).

So, questions -

1) powerline vs wifi to ethernet bridge? Is a range extender OK as a wifi to ethernet bridge? (I see wirecutter recommends TP-Link TL-WPA8630 V2 or TP-Link AC750 Wi-Fi Range Extender RE200)

2) How to get the laptop and NAS to talk to each other? Ethernet switch vs router vs splitter vs... ?

WD recomends GB connections between NAS and ? and Laptop

Is there a device can do 1 & 2 together !?

Cheers.....?

Edgerouter ER-4 a bit disappointed

So, I had a bit of a journey with an OpnSense install and my VLAN setup (still ongoing). Mostly to my personal lack of networking know how.

After a week I got so frustrated I just bought an EdgeRouter ER-4. Everyone and their dog saying they are the best bang for buck. I have a Gig fibre and apparently this thing just works.

Well... While it is a pretty sexy box and the UI is marvelously slick and it is impressive. Two things are killer features.

A)My OpnSense box (admittedly easily outpowering the ER-4) gets about 100mbit more downstream and 200mbit more up (ER-4 maxxed out at about 720/280, where the OS box did 870/510)!! That's nothing to sneeze at. Especially the up, which is why I have that link in the 1st place. And then, killer #2 (which I missed before buying), the LAGG support is well...only really theoretical.

I did try a lot of settings and googling but no avail. Also the same issues as with OpnSense appeared so it wasn't that. I hope I can return the ER-4 on Monday otherwise there will be one going here. Still a good box but you can have more for less I guess. Just thought I'd share. I'd definitely go for it for lower rates but then probably a smaller ER would do the job too.

Need guidance to connect R7000 with Advanced Tomato as Acess point to Vodafone modem

Hello Friends

I am hoping that you may be able to help me install StrongVPN using OpenVPN on a Nighthawk R7000 with Advanced Tomato.

Internet connection is Vodafone Fibre.

Have found a few guides but have not been able to succeed.

BTW I am 72 yo so please be a bit gentle with me as, although I am still learning I don't have your knowledge base.

Have flashed the R7000 with Advanced Tomato Ok. So far have been able to disable the WAN on the R7000 and use a network cable from the Vodafone LAN port to R7000 LAN port to start to get somewhere but really need some help (sort of plain English so as I can understand).

Is there any more basic info you need from me?.

Thanks in advance.

Hey

I am using the asus gt-ax11000 router with my netcomm NF18ACV modem from Orcon. So I'm meant to be getting over 800Mbps down and Over 400Mbps up. Once ive set the router up though i only get 170Mbps down and 340 Mbps up. My line test is fine when i run it through the router and if i go through the netcomm i get the speeds from the speedtest im meant to be getting.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Switching between VDSL and 4G Modems automatically (or manually)

I am going to be away from home for a while and want my home network to have VDSL uncapped with fall back to 4G capped.

It seems that a managed network switch may be required but I know nothing about these. Reading up now!

I don't want to use any web management access to my VDSL modem or my 4G modem.

Any pointers available?

TIA

Issue between ONT and ERLite-3

Hi,

Having a bizarre issue between my fibre ONT, and my EdgeRouter, in which eth0 seems to drop link from the ONT for 2 seconds or so. Due to the drop, I don't seem to be having 'drop-outs' as such, however am getting the odd ping drop, which I'd expect. Logs show the following:

Mar 14 01:42:59 rtr01 kernel: eth0: Link downMar 14 01:43:01 rtr01 kernel: eth0: 1000 Mbps Full duplex, port 0Mar 14 01:53:57 rtr01 kernel: eth0: Link downMar 14 01:53:59 rtr01 kernel: eth0: 1000 Mbps Full duplex, port 0Mar 14 07:09:21 rtr01 kernel: eth0: Link downMar 14 07:09:23 rtr01 kernel: eth0: 1000 Mbps Full duplex, port 0Mar 14 18:38:58 rtr01 kernel: eth0: Link downMar 14 18:39:00 rtr01 kernel: eth0: 1000 Mbps Full duplex, port 0Mar 14 20:16:36 rtr01 kernel: eth0: Link downMar 14 20:16:38 rtr01 kernel: eth0: 1000 Mbps Full duplex, port 0Mar 14 21:24:33 rtr01 kernel: eth0: Link downMar 14 21:24:35 rtr01 kernel: eth0: 1000 Mbps Full duplex, port 0Mar 15 06:05:55 rtr01 kernel: eth0: Link downMar 15 06:05:57 rtr01 kernel: eth0: 1000 Mbps Full duplex, port 0Mar 15 06:57:49 rtr01 kernel: eth0: Link downMar 15 06:57:51 rtr01 kernel: eth0: 1000 Mbps Full duplex, port 0Mar 15 08:52:41 rtr01 kernel: eth0: Link downMar 15 08:52:43 rtr01 kernel: eth0: 1000 Mbps Full duplex, port 0

Anyone come across this before, and if so, how did you manage to fix this? I have run proper testing across the Cat6 run between the ONT and the EdgeRouter, with nothing of note coming from this. Possible issue with the ONT port?

Cheers

Fiber & Modem Question

Hi I have a small question

So we just got a new fiber connection, which has a box on the wall inside the house, which is then plugged into the modem

Now this box has more ethernet ports, so i wanted to know if i buy a third party modem from store, can i plug it into the fiber box? will the modem then be capable of getting internet, or will it not work ?

i just thought i will use a 2nd powerful modem for pushing wifi into the back rooms, as the current rooms dont get enough from existing modem which is given by supplier,

cheers,

VPN Connection with iPad and FortiClient

Hello,

I connect to our work network on my iPad with the FortiClient app and it connects successfully. I use the documents app to view files on our server, this works fine when I'm connected via wifi at the office and connected to the VPN while hotspotting from my mobile phone. It doesnt work at home connected to my Spark fibre connection - the VPN connects successfully just cant find any files/folders

Is this something to do with my modem at home or ?

Google DNS re-direct; hard coded device fails to call home

I have a Vu+ Zero that appears to use built in google DNS when it tries to phone home when using its plugin manager.

My edgerouter re-directs 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 requests to my pihole. As best I can tell the re-direct works successfully.

What I am struggling with is that the Vu+ fails to connect to their servers, unless I disable the two DNAT rules on the edgrouter.

Is this something I can work around?

Vodafone Ultrahub and Ubiquiti AP

Our Vodafone Ultrahub wifi doesn't reach out to the attached garage/sleepout. I have been looking at Ubiquiti AP's to put in the sleepout, running without a controller.

We have an existing POE switch (802.3af).

Does it make sense to only have one Ubiquiti AP in the house, and continue using the existing Wifi, or are we better having a second AP for the house?

If I buy a secondhand AP that doesn't support 802.3af, can we plug the included POE adaptor into the switch, and would it still need power? (the switch cupboard has limited power as the electrician ran the power off the light circuit)

The AP's I'm looking at are the UAP-LR or the UAP-AC-LR (both secondhand). Is it worth paying twice the price for the AC-LR so we don't need to use a POE adaptor.

If we keep the existing Ultrahub wifi going, will both wifi networks be able to access the wired NAS?

Bad sector on NAS drive - time to replace?

As if it wasn't enough that my kids wake up in the middle of the night crying, needing attention, now my technology has taken to doing the same thing...

Last night, around 2.30am, my Synology NAS started beeping. I got up to investigate, and discovered that volume 1 had "crashed". It's not a RAID (haven't got around to it yet), just a single SHR/BTRFS volume. I seem to be able to access data through File Station in Synology DSM, and when I ran a SMART quick test, it came up with "normal", but noted 1 bad sector. Specifically, "1 bad sectors were detected and have been automatically repaired by the disk. Bad Sector Count displays the sum of SMART Attributes "Reallocated Sectors Count", "Current Pending Sector Count" and "Uncorrectable Sector Count". It may indicate that the disk surface has been physically damaged. This is repairable because data can be transferred to spare areas on the disk."

A couple of questions arise:

1. Is it time to get a new disk? I was already planning on it, as it's reached 90% capacity, and "only" has 388GB left.

2. Is it recoverable in the short term? And if so, what should I do? Do I just restart the NAS, or do I need to something else?

(FibreX) VLAN 10 and multiple VLANs on the network

Please forgive my ignorance and lack of in-depth understanding of VLAN tagging etc...

We are on Vodafone FibreX, but running a Ubiquiti USG, switch and AP.

I'd like to put all of the kids devices on a separate VLAN (for a number of reasons, one of them being that I'd like to run their traffic through OpenDNS, without having to set it up on each device). If I set up a separate 'network' in the via the Unifi controller for this purpose, and tag it as, say, VLAN 55, would this cause issues with their internet traffic? I say this since I recall all WAN traffic is VLAN 10.

Forgive me if I am imprecise with my terminology, as I said, I am still getting up to speed with this stuff...

Thanks in advance!

Fibre 100: Powerline 600 v 1000mbps

Hi Geeks.

Firstly just want to say over the years I read over all the various topics on the forum and appreciate your knowledge, wisdom and kindess in helping out the lesser geeks.

My question is as per the subject title, but just background.

Moving in to a rental property. Orcon Fibre 100 plan (used your referral link, so thanks for that!). Fibre already installed and ready. Recieved the Orcon supplied Router.

Having never been on Fibre before, it will vastly increase the speeds and reliabilty I have been use to on ADSL. I have gamed comfortably for the years which has the occasional drops and spikes, but completely blaps when my wife uploads a picture to instagram and my game times out....I look forward to this never happening again during the last ranked match round on Rainbow Six Siege or running a solo abyssal in Eve Online. Ever.

The ONT is located in the lounge, away from the sun/office room where I will setup my PC. It is roughly 8 metres away but crosses the front door's path. I thought about running an ethernet cable on the surface of the wall via the ceiling as that's the primary option, but last resort as is a rental property. I cannot run the cable on the skirting boards etc. because I have a young daughter who will rip it off and eat it.

My PC does not have a wifi PCI-E adapter (because I never dreamed of going wireless over cable for gaming!) and I don't think it is reliable enough as a gamer if I invested in one to connect wirelessly to the router provided.

I have used Powerlines before, without concerns re speed or connectivity. Reading over some topics, most do not appear on the forums to recommend them and I totally understand why because quite a few people do have trouble and have lesser speeds. As for me this appears to be the wiser option in this circumstance.

So, will the cheaper AV600 still support the Fibre100 speed as opposed to the AV1000? Will I still see the fibre increased speeds through these? (I am unable to post links as I'm new but from Mightyape)

TP-Link AV600 TL-PA4010P KIT V2 - $109

Tp-Link Tl-PA7010P AV1000 - $139

If I eventually upgraded to the Gigantic Fibre 900mbps/450, would the V600 hinder this in reality?

Altrenatively, do you have any other recommendations in this situation?

Appreciate your time. ??

Dual Vlan 10's on Mikrotik

I have a RB1100AHX4 router and am looking at acquiring a CRS326-24G-2S+RM switch. I need to interface to 2x VDSL2 WAN networks via Metanoia VDSL SFP's which will be plugged into the switch and trunked back to the router. Thing is, both VDSL interfaces need to be tagged VLAN 10. Any thoughts on topology/strategy for this?

IBM Xyratex NAS - opinion?

$

I am in the market for my first ever NAS. I have been looking at the usual suspects like Synology and QNAP, but good ones do not come cheap. Recently I saw a IBM NAS on trademe: it has a server grade intel CPU, 8GB RAM and 12 x 1TB drives and runs FreeNAS. Although the model number is not on the listing, it appears to be a Xyratex unit. Specification wise it seems too good to be true. So apart from the noise issue (which will not be a problem for me where I intend to put it), what is the catch?

In general, for the same money, is it better to buy a new but lower spec model (say a Synology 216se), or is it better to buy an older but higher spec model second hand?

Use case will be mainly storage / back up and would be a bonus if I can run plex and serve iTunes from it.

EdgeRouter 6P as switch?

I'm looking to upgrade my Huawei Spark router to a EdgeRouter 6P but i want to know if the ports can be used as a switch as i read that the EdgeRouter does not have a dedicated switch? Would it be better to buy the EdgeRouter ER4 and a cheap unmanaged switch?

My network has 2x Unifi APs and 3 wired devices connected to the router

Hi

Looking at installing Fibre shortly at home and I am very limited with ethernet and Wifi. I am thinking about using my existing telephone cables and switching their use to ethernet.

A couple of photos showing the existing telephone cables

Question - Are the cables Cat5 or Cat5e. If Cat5 will this be an issue

Your help would be appreciated

Thanks

Idiot-proof Gigabit Router Needed. Edgerouter Lite?

$

I'm in search of a router that will not bottleneck my gigabit connection. I'd like something that will have a reasonable support lifespan (not just receive a couple of firmware updates and then be abandoned after a year). The Edgerouter Lite appears to fit those criteria.

My third requirement is that it's fairly idiot-proof to set up. I've seen the ER-X's wizard, presumably the ER-L is the same? Is an ER-L configured by the wizard (with default firewalls enabled) ready to go and comparably secure to a typical home router.

Fastest Asus router for Vodafone fibre max

Current setup is a Asus DSL-Ac68u router (was on VDSL) this is now reconfigured and using port 4 as a WAN port. Speed tests are only getting 400Mbs and should reach 700-900.Would swapping to a RT-AC68u help? Does the DSL side limit these routers? Should I get a different brand router? This router is not doing Wifi and both radios are off. I do like the Asus routers.
