Google Nest Wifi With Fritzbox Problems

Hi All

Looking for some help with my home setup please.

I have 2 Degrees fibre with the 7490 Fritzbox and i have just picked up the new google nest wifi mesh.

Setup was easy and it seems to work well but i am getting a lot of connection drop outs. I have a new sony smart tv and it will constantly drop out every 20min or so when watching netflix for example. Other devices have similar connection dropout issues.

I've done some research and i see things like double Nat, bridge mode router, VLAN tagging but that's a bit above me to be honest haha. Ive turned the wifi off on the fritzbox to see if that was causing the issue but still no luck.

Has anyone had any success with my current setup? any router settings i can change? or do i have to get a new router...

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!!!

UniFi AC AP Lite As A Downlink

Hi There,

I currently have a single UniFi AC-AP-LR but it's not giving me the coverage I need so I'm looking to purchase one or two more UniFi APs to act as downlinks around the house. I was thinking of just using the AC-AP-Lite units as they are the cheapest but before I do I thought I'd ask if anyone has experience with these devices and with UniFi "meshing" in general. Any feedback appreciated.

Cheers

Hi there,

Has anyone successfully setup an HP Laserjet CP1025nw using WPS to connect to a Huawei B315 router?

Steps taken:

Pressed and held the WPS button on the router. Wifi flashes as expected.

Turned on Wifi on printer which flashed. Guess device is expecting to pair.

After a couple of minutes the router gives up and the printer stays flashing.

Sigh.

I have an aquarium light in my house which has it's own WIFI signal. I can connect my laptop to this wifi network and then control the light via it's internal network.

The question I have is.

Can I get my router to connect to this wifi network all the time so I can access it on my computer while connected via Ethernet to my router

Recommendation for Fibre Modem/Router and Mesh wifi points

Hi,

I've moved into a new mid-range house with a comms cabinet in the garage, ethernet ports in each of the 5 bedrooms and the main and 2nd living spaces.

It's a 2 storey house and is not overly large. I'm with Spark.

I thought I'd put the modem/router in the comms cabinet and connect it to all the ethernet ports, then put a mesh point in the main living space on the ground floor plus another one in the central bedroom upstairs. That should give me good wifi coverage for the 2 floors and the key outdoor zones.

I've currently got the older Huawei HG659b device, and was thinking to replace that with the Spark Smart Modem.

Then I thought to get 2 Spark Smart Mesh points and connect them to ethernet points.

Questions:

If I have the modem/router in the metal comms cabinet will that block it's wifi signal?

Do the mesh points support connecting back to the modem/router over either wifi or ethernet and is it configurable?

I don't need a high-end setup, just wanting to get gigabit to the ethernet ports and 802.11 a/n/ac. I think I might be able to drop the 2.4GHz types.

I think Spark will provide the Smart Modem for just the cost of shipping if I extend my contract, then I just need to pay for the Smart Mesh points.

Thanks.

Can't get EdgeRouter X working on Spark: Fibre box on wall > EdgeRouter X > Google WiFi primary pod

Hello all,

Firstly, I've done this same setup at another house with Vodafone - it was my first time and it didn't take long.

This attempt, with Spark (not sure if it makes any significant difference), has been a nightmare. I have run the ipsec and hwnat commands as well.

My setup is: Fibre box on wall > EdgeRouter X > Google WiFi pod > (2 more pods spaced throughout house).

Initially, I went through the basic setup provided by this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aECPxlT6Qq4 with no such luck.

Then, I tried it again using the settings provided by Spark: https://www.spark.co.nz/help/internet/set-up/non-spark-modem/ - no luck there either. I'm also not sure whether it should even be under PPPoE or DHCP.

I then tried this tutorial, which everyone has said worked for them: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=205740 - not for me, I am assuming I've done something wrong.

After being quite sure everything has been set up properly, I plug the ONT into Eth0 and the Google WiFi master pod into the Eth1 port. The Google WiFi (according to the app on my phone) just says everything is offline - everything is even greyed out, so I can't reset settings and such.

I've been having to take the ER-X upstairs and plugging it into my PC, changing the settings, bring it downstairs, plug everything in and do this over and over with different tutorials, to no avail. Anyone have any idea what's happening?

[HELP] - US-8-60W POE Switch won't work [diagram layout included]

Hi guys,

I purchased the US-8-60W POE Switch and set it all up connected to one of my Fritzbox router. When opening the Ubiquiti UniFi Controller (Windows 10 PC) > Launch browser to manage >  it shows the POE Switch device but it attempts to adopt but then disconnects and then readopts then disconnects. The adopt never finishes/succeeds..

Methods tried:

  1. I have tried using a cable ethernet cat6 cable shorter length and doesn't work
  2. Reset the POE switch 5 times (holding the reset button until led turns off while power is still on).
  3. Turn POE Switch off and on
  4. tried inserting to different ports of both the router and POE switch
  5. have also tried connecting the POE Switch to the fritz 1 and problem still persist

NOTE: During the first setup attempt when entering the device using the Ubiquiti UniFi Controller, I was told to setup the POE device with a wifi name and pass.... strange but yeah.

Please help (I'm still quite new to networking so please bear with me).

Thanks and I look forward to working with you guys to fix this problem ??

Does anyone have any experience using Ubiquiti Aircube APs

Does anyone have any experience using Ubiquiti Aircubes as access points?

I have found a bunch of places selling them, but very little in the way of documentation or actual reviews.

I'm planning to replace the Huawei HG659 I currently have (poor WiFi coverage and the stupid 32 device limit). This will either be with the new Spark Smartmodem, or with something else - possibly a TP-Link Archer AX6000 to get the 8 gigabit ports.

But I also want to place some APs with wired backhaul to eliminate WiFi dead spots. At first glance the Aircubes look nice as they seem decently priced, support both bands with 102.11ac, and have a couple of additional gigabit ports that would let me connect wired devices. Plus, Ubiquiti seems to have a decent reputation.

The price is about the same as the Spark mesh extenders and, on paper, they seem more capable. I'm interested in whether anyone has used these, and experiences of how well they work as APs. I'm thinking two of them, plus a decent router, should take out all my dead spots. Or is there a better option I have overlooked? (I'm not really an IT or a networking guy).

My 'Cat6' cable is only 100Mbps

Hi everyone. Last year I bought a roll of Cat6 cable from trademe, and installed it (about 20 metres) from my modem to my Nvidia Shield Tv. I have jut realized the link speed is 100Mbps )plus I got occasional issue with it dropping to 10Mbps and had to replug it). I tried another cable and get 1000Mbps testing to my laptop.

I made a short 1 metre cable and tried it and only get 100Mbps to my computer in testing.

So I figure the cable isnt very good. I have ordered another roll of Cat6 to try out.

I have just realized I have also used some of that cable from my VDSL master filter to the modem - would this cause any issue as well?

We only have max about 40Mbps download speed - so it may not make any difference if the link speed was only 100Mbps anyway I guess? But I figured it cant hurt to have a better cable.

Is it possible to configure Spark Huawei HG630B as a wireless router or bridge only?

Hi all.

I have a Spark VDSL connection with a Huawei HG659 modem (originally a Vodafone modem, but I put Spark firmware on it).

I also have a Spark Huawei HG630b modem which I would like to use to extend my wireless network (or simply create a second wifi network) down in my garage. I have the house wired with network cable, so can connect from my modem to the WAN Port on my HG630b in the garage).

I have tried to find a way to configure the HG630b to do this, but cannot figure it out (if it is in fact possible). Anyone here know if this can be done, and how?

Cheers.

Win 10 to Mint via Ethernet

I am trying to make a direct Ethernet connection between a Win 10 laptop and one running Mint so I can test some cables using LAN Speed Test. I have Mint set to Link Local and I have created a shared folder to write to. I have also tried to set the Windows IPv4 IP address to the one displayed by Mint IFCONFIG but I can't get windows to see the Linux computer. My networking skills are pretty limited and I also don't know much about Linux so I am kind of out of my depth here. I have been searching on-line but I can't figure out why the computers won't connect. I'm sure it is just something simple and obvious that I am missing but if anyone knows the secret I would be grateful for some help. Thanks in advance.

Sonos/Alexa Integration with Edgerouter Lite

I have a new Sonos One (Gen 2) which supports Alexa integration. However, the Alexa integration doesn't work with my network. The Sonos works fine for streaming music (selected through iOS app) and Alexa responds to the Sonos mic, but won't play music requested.

By trial and error it seems the problem is due to my Edgerouter Lite. i.e. I swapped it out for an old Netgear router (flashed with Gargoyle) and the Alexa integration worked fine (with the same switch, WAP etc). So there seems to be something in the Edgerouter that is causing an issue.

I think the only non default setting I have in the ERL is using dns4me DNS servers. Would there be any other setting that would be different in the ERL? Maybe some firewall settings? Ports that need to be opened?

Setting Up HG659 as modem to replace my Vodafone Ultra Hub

Hi Team,

Clearly new here so please go easy XD

I'm on Vodafone Fibre with one of those horrible Ultra Hub's... I've been struggling for a long time trying to get it to work well with Google WiFi to which VF support has been a bit of a joke (Didn't expect much).

Following members advice on this page I decided to pick up Huawei HG659 (Vodafone branded) as I believe they work better with other Routers and can customize more settings on it.

My question is:

What settings do I need to change exactly so my Google WiFi can handle the wireless side (But I can still use the Ethernet ports on the HG659)?

My network at home is a disaster at the moment with this Ultra Hub... And I'm just not quite tech savvy enough dive into the 'nitty gritty' of the settings on these things.

Thanks in advance guys - Love the site and the advice I get from here.

Edge Router X dropping Static IP

$

Hi all,

My ISP is 2Degrees and due to their CGNAT implementation, I have opted to get a Static IP from them.

Every few days (2-5 approximately) my ERX will lose internet connection, and when I log onto the ERX portal, the PPPoe interface shows as disconnected with no IP assigned to it.

All I have to do is restart the ERX and it will work fine again.

Does anyone know what the cause of this might be and if there is anything I can do to not have to reset the ERX every few days?

Appreciate any help!

Trouble accessing Synology NAS from outside LAN

$

Hi there

I am with Spark, on Fibre Broadband, Using standard SPARK HG659b router. And Synology NAS 415play.

Firmware on router: V100R001C227B022

NAS is fully up to date.

I have in the recent past (a few months ago) had no issues connecting to the NAS from outside the LAN on:

port 5001 to access the NAS Diskstation Manager

port 1194 for VPN

port (non-standard #) for SFTP

I have not changed anything in recent times. But I can no longer access any of the above.

I have checked the port forwarding rules in the router, and they all look good to me. No apparent change.

I have checked the firewall in the NAS, and that also looks good to me. No apparent change.

I restarted both the router and the NAS

As far as I can tell, I should be able to connect, but I can't.

[edit] I can connect via the Synology "quickconnect.to/quickconnectID", which I believe uses 80, 443, and/or 8888.

I don't know enough to understand where the block might be happening. Any ideas how I can work out where the problem might be happening?

Thanks

Unifi Gen2 PoE switch advice

I need to replace my PoE switch which has died.

My dilemma is really around active vs passive cooling - my general impression is that passive cooling products are usually overly optimistic and likely to die sooner than actively cooled systems.

I've got a unifi setup at home, so keen to stick with their line of products.

I'm comparing the passively cooled USW-24-POE Gen 2 vs the USW-Pro-24-POE Gen 2. For my needs, the difference is no fan vs fan (and to a lesser degree power output). I'm pretty sure that 120W from the home model would be enough for my needs, however 22.5 dB fan noise from the pro would be fine if it'll help keep the system cooler.

It needs to power:

3x Unifi cameras

2x UAP-AC-pro access points

2x UAP-IW-HD access points

Yealink WP52 base station.

So, is anyone using the passively cooled USW-24-POE Gen 2? How hot does it get (ideally under a similar load), and what's the airflow like around your setup?

The pro has a max power output of 450w, vs 120w for the non-pro model. Is heat production likely to be the same if using the USW-Pro-24-POE Gen 2 for the same given load?

I'm leaning towards the pro model, but wonder if I'm over calling it.

The device will sit in a rack with approx 1" space above it (with a non-POE switch) and 2" below. The rack is in a cupboard which gets up to about 30-35 deg in summer. The cupboard door stays open to aid with airflow, and there's an extractor fan at the top of the cupboard to vent heat, but that fan is noisier than a jet engine so I'd prefer not to use it if I can avoid it.

Fritz!Box 7490 Port Forward headaches with Windows machines

$

While I think the Fritz Box is a pretty good piece of hardware, the internal lan configuration absolutely drives me insane and never seems to work for me properly. I know there were bugs in old versions of the firmware regarding assigning fixed IP addresses, but now I'm having a massive headache trying to setup port forwards in the permit access section. No matter what I try I keep getting:

A device with this name has already been configured

As best I can tell, it's using the the network name/id as an index for the port forwards and once you to try to setup a port forward to a specific windows 10 machine on the FritzBox 7490 it locks it up and you can't add other port forwards?

I'm running the 7.10 firmware so I'm at the latest revision.

In this particular case, I managed to finally force it to accept a port forward by manually configuring it against and IP address rather than selecting it from the dropdown list, but I wanted to add a secondary port forward as I'm trying to expose several different services on this one windows 10 machine to the internet. So I hoped that I could just add a new share to that one device that is already working in the Permit Access section but I get that same error again.I have other machines on the network setup in the exact same fashion, but, admittedly that was done last year when the Fritz firmware was at an earlier revision. So I suspect this is a new bug. It's a bit of a nightmare trying to get support from the internet though as most published pages for the fritz box on google are from German forums so it becomes really hard to seek support from other users to see what they are all doing.

Anyone here have this issue and any suggestions on fixing it?

14km PTP over Whangarei with Ubiquiti LiteBeam 5AC LR ?

I have line of sight from the top of a mountain in Kamo, over Whangarei, to an address near Onerahi Airport where I'm looking to beam a UFB connection from.

Based on Ubiquiti AirLink stats does this looks feasible with 2x Ubiquiti LiteBeam 5AC LR or do I need to make more allowance for noise floor of Whangarei / Onerahi Airport (anyone happen to have any measurements?), cloud / rain etc?
