OK, now I'm really confused and would greatly appreciate any insights. First, my setup: I'm on 4G wireless RBI, Huawei gateway device upstairs with laptop in next room connected at the moment via Ethernet cable about three metres long. Another 30 metre cable runs through the house to feed a TP Link router. At this end we use wi-fi. The cables are cat 5 something, I think cat 5e. Although I have a fair bit of general computer knowledge, I don't have much network experience and don't know much about it. When I run Speedtest, I consistently get a ping of around 56 - 60, download 30 mb/s, upload around 20 mb/s. Having recently heard that some people can get up to 70 mb/s with 4G, I became curious as to whether our setup was doing everything it might be capable of so I decided to run a quick comparison test. I took a new laptop and ran Speedtest via wi-fi while sitting next to the downstairs router. I got 39 down and 20+ up, slightly better than usual. I then took the same laptop upstairs and ran several tests using a LAN connection. On one of the tests I connected the laptop directly to the Huawei with a new cable about two metres long. All of the LAN tests, including a later one on a different cable, gave the same result: similar ping but around 5mb/s down and nearly the same up. WTF?After those tests I immediately went back to my first location (downstairs next to the TP Link router) and did the test again via wi-fi. I got the same result as earlier, 39 mb/s down and over 20 mb/s up. So apparently the wi-fi fed by LAN is significantly faster than a direct LAN connection. This doesn't seem to make sense, at least not to me. Can anyone with more knowledge explain this? What am I actually measuring with those tests? Can it be that my laptop just has a slow LAN port? I can't make sense of these findings.

Flashed wrong firmware (Belkin N600) on Belkin N450 router. HELP!
Hi I have been having a number of connection issues with my Belkin N450 (F9K1105 v1) wireless router.I went to check that the firmware was up to date and noticed that at some point I have flashed the Belkin N600 firmware onto the device. I have gone to the Belkin site and downloaded the correct firmware for the N450 but when I attempt to flash it the device says: Upgrade file is not the correct type or version for this device. Upgrade failed. Please obtain the correct file and try again. I have also tried a 30/30/30 reset. What can I do to fix my router?

Business Class Modem/router for VodafibreFibre ??
Hi there. Rather than hijack the thread below, I'm starting a new one as this has differnet requirement I'm after recommendations to replace a unreliable Vodafone Fibre modem , it has to be restarted occasionally (sometimes on the weekend unfortunately, so someone has to drive out there to do it) New router wont need wifi, and would just be setup with a DMZ pointed to the firewall deviceVodafone sent out HGF659 as a replacement: what a disaster. I set the DMZ to to point to the Hardware firewall: incoming email to the server (25)worked, as did remote desktop(TS) . So these ports were correctly forwarded through the DMZ (to the firewall)OWA, Remote Web Workplace & access to the company website were all blocked/not workingThat HG659 had to come out quickly & the old flaky modem put back in.Im guessing the HG659 is more of a home user modem/router ? So any recommendations? I'd assume the aftermarket fibre modems would work with any ISP , in case the company changes internet provider.

Gigatown Router/Firewall suggestions
With the advent of Gigatown I find myself in need of a new router. My Draytek is an excellent router but the throughput is simply way to slow.I can't use the Vodafone supplied router because it is limited to a class C subnet and in any case can't act as a VPN endpoint.I am hoping someone can suggest a firewall or router with all of the following properties:1. At least 700mbs WAN to LAN throughput2. Must be able to act as a VPN endpoint (preferably PPTP L2TP etc, not just open VPN)3. No Fan4. Under $10005. Must do VLAN tagging on the WAN connectionanyone got any suggestions?

2 routers, 1 SSID, 2 Channels (2 and 11)
My laptop always seems to hit the channel 2 even though the channel 11 is a lot closer.Since they have the same SSID they both don't show up (nor do I really know which it's hitting unless I netsh wlan show interfaces and look at the channel).Any way to force it on to the higher strength one short of 2 ssids?

Static 6in4 tunnel (Huawei HG659b + SixXS)
I'm trying to set up a static IPv6 tunnel using the SixXS service as as I am on a static IPv4 address I requested a 6in4 static service with them.I now have the Wellington based POP config info and my new IPv6 address but I am not sure how best to implement this in my Spark HG659b?The goal is to be able to have inbound and outbound IPv6 connections to/from any machine on my home LAN rather than running a tool like AYIYA and have the tunnel end on a single machine within the LAN.Does anyone have some experience with the HG659b and setting such a thing up using SixXS?Thanks, Paul

Help! Keep getting limited connection(Yellow Triangle) with TP-Link modem/router
Hi All,I've been experiencing strange problems with my internet connection. I have TD-W8950ND 150Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router. There used to be 2 computers connected up, via ethernet cable (plus phones, tablet, smart tv). After we got another computer and connected it up to the modem, I have started getting the yellow triangle symbol on the internet icon in Windows quite often. When it happens, I am unable to use the internet. This rarely occurred when we only had 2 computers. I've talked to Spark and PB Tech(where I bought the modem), but they are unsure as well. I have tried finding an update to the firmware, but the model is no longer listed on the TP-Link website. I noticed that it does not support IPv6. Could this be the cause of the problem? I have noticed that sometimes Facebook is slow to load, especially when I scroll downwards.I would greatly appreciate any help with this annoying problemThanks.

Router replacement for my TG585v8 (spark)
Hi,after having endured this awful TG585v8 router for so long I decided it was time to get rid of it, or at least its wireless functionality. The ethernet on it works fine, but the wireless must be malfunctioning or something because over wifi I get intermittent 3+ second pings to the router itself at any distance, even sitting right next to it; the wifi network also dies occasionally and will not revive, and the router needs to be rebooted constantly, the telnet interface is obscenely slow and the web interface often does not load at all, etc... It does not seem to be overheating, the router's system load during the latency spikes looks okay, it's not an interference or range problem, I've just eventually concluded that something inside the router is seriously borked. Inconveniently this stock ISP router has the modem integrated (ADSL2+).Anyway I've finally had enough of this stupid piece of hardware making my life miserable and am looking for a new router. So far the most promising ones I found were:* the Netgear AC1200 (D6200) modem + router, but people have reported issues with it and it also doesn't have external antennas; I don't know if it makes a huge difference to the range but I have only ever used routers with external antennas and my house has quite a few rather thick walls so I need powerful reception* the Netgear DGN2200 modem + router, which is cheap but for some reason these Netgear modem/router combos have a lot of bad reviews from users * the D-Link DIR-880L, which is rather expensive and does not come with a modem (so I'd have to hook it up to my current router via ethernet until I can get a separate modem) but has good reviews and actually looks decent (not that appearance is hugely important)But I don't really know if these are any good. Reading reviews off the net it seems every router ever made has every problem imaginable, can someone help me see through this mess and recommend me a good router that will actually function as advertised? I am a technical person software-wise and can do any and all setup needed but I will no longer tolerate bad connectivity. I also don't care much for any advanced features like parental control or whatever, basic functionality only will do fine. Shared drive capability would be a bonus but not required. Being able to install custom firmware on it would be a bonus but if the stock firmware actually works I'm probably not going to be flashing it for fun. Thanks for any advice,a frustrated user

UFB Router to use with Spark
Hello,I am wanting to upgrade the standard Spark Huawei router with a new Gigabit one. I am looking at the Netgear R7000 Nighthawk as it seems to get good reviews. But I was wondering if anyone is using this and if it works on the Spark UFB system. I am on the 100/20 plan at present, or if another router is to be recommended (need wireless and gigabit ports)Also if you do use this is it easy to set up? (use Unotelly and Netflix)thanks,David

VDSL installation questions
I'm about to get VDSL installed at my new house and I need to get a few things clear in my head before the technician comes around because I don't want this messed up.First, here's a picture of a panel that's on the inside west wall of my garage. It's not a great quality picture, but it's one I had access to from here at work and it should be good enough to ask my questions (click image for full sized version):(1) is a standard white square telecomms access point with a single BT socket, and a printed label saying ADSL - and I know that the previous occupants had ADSL broadband. (2) is an array of twelve RJ45 sockets that I assume are connected to sockets in the house - many rooms have plates on the wall that contain one BT and one RJ45 socket. The ETP is on the outside east wall of the garage, so it's not just behind this panel - it's the width of a double garage away. I mention this to say that if any additional wiring between the ETP and the panel was required it wouldn't be a simple job (or at least would result in exposed wires being stapled to my inside garage walls). And my current modem/router is a standard issue Spark "business gateway", i.e. the Huawei HG659.So what should happen when the VDSL install is done? In my head, the process goes something like this:a master splitter is installed in the ETP,the split off line to be used for VDSL connects to access point (1),the socket in access point (1) should be upgraded from BT to RJxx (11, 45, ??),a short patch cable is plugged into access point (1) and connected to the RJ45 socket in array (2) that connects to the socket in the house where I want the modem/router to sit.the modem gets plugged into the patched socket. Is that more or less it, or am I on the wrong track? Also, is it possible that access point (1) indicates there might already be a master splitter in the ETP, even though the previous occupants had ADSL? If they were sharing a line for their phone and modem (presumably with in-line filters) then what would that ADSL access point be for?And my final question is: If I upgrade the modem/router in the future, could I locate a modem in the panel, connect it to the world via access point (1), then connect via array (2) to two or three routers or access points in different parts of the house so I get better wireless coverage?

Win10 Sudden "Doesn't Have Valid IP Configuration" Fault - [SOLVED]
Laptop was successfully updated to Windows 10 a couple of weeks ago. Around the same time got UFB up and running. Everything has been going swimmingly, but suddenly on startup tonight I get the dreaded yellow triangle in the network icon in the toolbar. Internet connection is 'limited'. Going through the standard windows trouble shooter says that "[connection name] doesn't have a valid IP configuration".Exactly the same fault on Ethernet and WiFi. Only effecting one computer (Mine!!!) All other devices are working as normal. Some on cable and some on WiFi, no issues whatsoever. Dr Google has very little on this for Win10. Computer, modem and network adapter have been restarted multiple times. No apparent updates installed lately (and as it only effects one computer?) Well outside my area of knowledge here. Help?

Netgear R7000 replacement and disconnects
As my discussion on a earlier subject, I purchased the Netgear R7000 to use with Spark fiber. Once I set it up using Vlan10 it will run fine for a short while but will then lose the connection to the internet. Netgear Genie indicates that the connection from my computer to the R7000 is fine, but to the internet is down. I cannot even load the Netgear setup page in the browser. I am wondering if it is an issue between my system and the router losing the connection? Can anyone give me some advice on what may be causing this?Is there something else in network settings that I need to do? Is it still picking up something from the old Spark router that is interfering. I have disabled my Bitdefender fire wall, but no change. Also have updated to the latest firmware, but made no difference.thanks,David

Win10 Sudden "Doesn't Have Valid IP Configuration" Fault
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=180847I thought this was sorted, but it keeps happening. Any ideas? Same process gets it going again instantly. To save opening the last thread:Laptop was successfully updated to Windows 10 a couple of weeks ago. Around the same time got UFB up and running. I have not idea what I just did but the following from the above page fixed it immediately:1. On the opened Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the IPCONFIG /RELEASE command and press Enter.2. Once the command is executed successfully, and the cursor starts blinking, type the IPCONFIG /RENEW command and hit Enter. Scanned and all clear. This is soooooooo far above my head I have no idea where to even begin!**sorry for the new thread, but updated the last one with 'solved' in the heading, which I cannot now edit and thought it would probably be ignored**

Windows network problem
My home network has 3 computers, 2 XP and 1 Win7and has developed a problem I can't easily fix. Everything can be fine for a few days then suddenly XP1 machine reports An error occurred while reconnecting O: to \\win7-pc\Desktop Microsoft Windows Network : The local device name is already in use. This connection has not been restored. Going the other way (Win7 to XP1) is OK. And XP2 machine can see/been seen by the other two... So I have to copy files from XP1 to XP2, then XP2 to Win 7 Sometimes rebooting the win7 machine fixing things, but otherwise I need to reboot XP1 which I'd rather avoid. Is there any way to find out why the device name is in use, and not restored , and hopefully make XP1communicate with win7 again (without rebooting)? Thanks for any help.

Where to purchase Network Distribution Box?
Hi there,Not sure if this is quite the right place for this question but I couldn't see anything that fit perfectly.I'm looking at having fibre installed and am taking the opportunity to mount a distribution box to the wall where the fibre will come into. This will also be where I will house my network switch, manage telephone lines, audio etc.I have seen these types of boxes installed in lots of new houses but I can't seem to find anyone that is selling this type of equipment. I am possibly not using the correct terminology in my searches.Below is an example of what I have seen being used :Does anyone know where I can purchase such a box and accessories? Thanks
