Hi,My father in law received a new HG659b modem from Spark at his business. He hosts his own website onsite, however, since he installed this modem he is no longer able to access the website from within the LAN. The browser is redirected to the modem admin page. The website is accessible from the internet.Editing the hosts file to resolve the name to the correct LAN address on one of the machines rectified the issue. But I don't think this is a good long term solution to edit the host file on all the machines. Is this normal for these modems to do this? Amy other possible solutions?Cheers

Help with Wireless Nation VDSL set up
I've switched from spark fibre to fibre over VDSL through wireless nation as I've moved to an apt building. I want to take my huawei hg630b router with me instead of buying a new one. I can't for the life of me get the new connection to work. DSL light on the router and have changed the settings with the limited info from WN but nothing. WN won't offer support because its not one of their routers. If anyone can/willing to help I'll provide more info?

SSL oddity
I've got an SSL certificate warning suddenly appeared on my Mac and I'm wondering whether it's sinister or some weirdness from my UFB router. The router is a Huawei HG630b on Spark fibre. Here's the error. This software has been running 24x7 for over a week with no issues and I haven't made any OS updates in that time (I'm on the GM of OS X 10.11 which released to the public today). My network is 192.168.1.* and the router is at .254What's going on here?

Flash Zenbu Router
I purchased a Linksys WRT54GL V1.1 off Trademe last week and when it arrived it had the Zenbu firmware on it.
I purchased this router with the intention of running DD-WRT on it. After researching for hours on end I found out I will have to do either a TFTP Flash or JTAG.
I'd rather not do JTAG unless it's a last resort, I've tried all today to Reflash the router via TFTP and I can't get it to work.
I set my PC to a static ip and tried to ping the router at 192.168.1.1 first when I power it up as that's what I usually do and it does not respond but instead it just boots straight into the Zenbu firmware like usual.
Has anyone done this before with the Zenbu or similar firmware? I've done TFTP to flashed and bricked routers before and got it working so this isn't new to me.

Please recommend me a good VDSL modem + router
Hi guys have been doing a fair bit of research but to my surprise there doesn't really seem to be much out there for my needs or if there is they have bad reviews. I am looking to buy a VDSL modem + router, that is voip compatible and has excellent coverage to cover a big 4 bedroom house including out in the yards (eg someone could check the mail while talking on the phone). I would like something that could handle someone talking on the phone and HD streaming at the same time with ease basically I am after I bit of a beast haha. I have I budget of upto $300-400 but if I could find something a lot cheaper than that will do the job then I certainly wont mind. The netgear range looks like exactly what I'm after however their vdsl modem + routers have shockingly bad reviews.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as honestly after a few days of researching I haven't really gotten anywhere! Lol, thanks.

Mixing Ethernet Over Powerline Adapters
What I Have NowMy existing network consists of a modem-router in the study, which connects to the internet (obviously), my desktop PC, my NAS, an ethernet-over powerline adapter, and my laptop (when used in the study), as well as providing wireless-N connectivity. My powerline network consists of:one Netgear XAVB 5001 adapter (in the study connecting the router to the network), andtwo XAVB 5004 adapters with four gigabit ports (one in the bedroom, one in the living room). They work great, media players in the two rooms, my DVD recorder, my Hauppauge Broadway, and my two music streaming boxes are all on the same network, can see the NAS, and I get stable transfers in the 70-80 mbit/sec range. They have been in place for a couple of years, work fine, and I'm generally happy with the performance so far. What I want to DoI want to expand my network to a couple more rooms, move some powerstrips onto surge protected ones (which powerline adapters don't like working through) so I want to move to adapters with AC passthrough, and also add a powerline WiFi access point to a place where my coverage is crappy. I want to keep using my netgear adapters (esp the 4-port hubs, which are fairly unique), as they work well and I don't want to spend to replace them if at all avoidable.Netgear adapters don't seem readily available in NZ available any more, and their model with AC passthrough doesn't even seem available in NZ. I have latched onto the Netcomm adapters (NP507 and NP508) as the ones that look the best. They cost a bit more than the alternatives, but seem to have the best specs and performance. So, I want to move a few adapters around, and add two NP507s and one NP508 to the mix.The IssueI'm a bit worried about whether the Netcomm adapters will "play nice" with the Netgear ones. In theory they are both Homeplug units so *should* be compatible. But I have also seen some stern injunctions that mixing different brands may not work well.So I'm wondering whether any GZers have any experience with this, and can advise whether adding Netcomms into the mix is likely to be sensible idea or not.

Roaming Multiple AP's with 1 SSID
Hiso i'm trying to set this up in my home so i can roam the house and get full bar wifi coverageusing 3 routersvodafone HG659, the default VDSL router they give you , set as gateway, dhcp on , 192.168.1.1Linksys E2000 , set to 192.168.1.2 , DHCP off , NAT off , RIP onLinksys WRT610nv3 , set to 192.168.1.3 , DHCP off , Nat off , RIP onrunning all on b/g/n using just 20mhzive read everywhere to just use the same SSID and passhrase , set nics roaming aggresiveness to high , run channels 1-6-11, but devices just dont switch , it will hang onto 1 bar reception rather than switch to a full strength signal , if i disable then reconnect it grabs the closest APintel tools confirm there are 3 AP's detectable under the one SSIDam i missing something ,every webpage i read says this should work ? but it doesnt....

Help with home network for new build - fibre install
We're building a new house (single level 200sqm) and I was wanting a bit of assistance with what I should be asking for as far as network stuff goes. The layout of the house - garage at one end, bedrooms/baths/study off a hall down the middle, family/dining/kitchen and a 'study nook' at the other end with a deck out front, and a lounge off there. The standard specification calls for the modem in the cabinet (which I understand murders wifi) and 3 data ports for the house.... so we'll be beefing it up a bit.At this stage my thoughts areLounge - 3 data (PC, TV, gaming console)Family - 3 data (PC, TV, gaming console)'Study nook' off dining - 2 data (PC, spare/network attached printer)3rd bed/study - 2 data (PC, spare/console)And maybe 1 each for the 3 other bedrooms for TVs.So a total of between 10 and 13 ports.Questions1 - How would you specify this? I feel like having 10-13 cable runs from one end of the house to the other is a lot of wiring.2 - I understand the fibre feeds into the house, connects to an ONT, and then a CAT6 is run from the ONT to the modem, which then runs a single CAT6 into a splitter board which then acts as the router - is this right?3 - The electrical firm said there'd be an extra cost to have the ONT and panel in the study, due to the run of fibre through a duct in the ceiling - can I put the ONT in the garage and then run CAT6 to the modem/splitter in the study wardrobe?I guess my aims are - not breaking the bank, future proofing to a sensible extent, and actually being able to get wi-fi coverage at the other end of the house!

Shiny new UFB - Tagging traffic for using Gargoyle
So for whatever reason I (and someone a lot more experienced than me) cannot get VLAN 802.1Q tagging working on a Gargoyle running WR1043ND v2.1.So I resigned myself to lookat at a mitrotik router and following Sbiddle's blog post here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/sbiddle/8744Being adverse to spending any more money, I had a thought. I'm running a cisco 2950 as a dumb switch. Surely this honking great big heavy noisy thing can do this.As far as I know I've cleared it of it's old company settings, and may have killed off all the vlans if not left the vlan1 which is a default. But if I wanted to create the VLAN 10 I need to hook this thing to the ONT then have my router in behind it - before feeding the router back into the switch.Would anyone have some fairly step by step instructions on what I'd do? I've been into this thing once via a console connection and as far as I know it doesn't show up on the network as a pingable device. I still have the console cable.

Laptop won't boot when connected to network via Ethernet
Hi all,I am having an issue with a new equipment purchase that neither I nor the technical support of the company I purchased it off have been able to resolve it yet, so I thought I'd post it here for ideas. To cut a long story short, I purchased a Lenovo X1 Carbon (gen 3) laptop and a Onelink Pro Dock a few weeks ago. The laptop will book fine when it is not connected to the dock, but when docked, it will not boot past the screen which says "press enter to access BIOS etc". I have further narrowed the issue and found that the laptop will boot when connected to the dock as long as I don't have an Ethernet cable connected to the dock. If I boot the laptop not connected to the dock, as soon as it starts to load Windows, it will boot up correctly. Or if it is already booted, connecting it to the dock gives normal functionality.I am running Windows 10 Home on the laptop.Things that have been tried so far that haven't resolved the issue:The dock has been replaced by LenovoUpdated laptop BIOSUpdated laptop graphics driversUpdated laptop LAN driversUpdated wake on LAN driversUpdated dock firmwareUpdated dock driversChanged boot order so the laptop FDD is number one priorityTried different combinations of monitorsTried different Ethernet cables (this network connections worked fine with an older Lenovo laptop and dock combo)I was wondering if there were any other generic type things I could try that may be causing this issue? I don't have access to any other Lenovo laptops which use the Onelink Pro Dock so that isn't an option unfortunately.Any guidance would be appreciated.Cheers.

Slow DNS resolution
I have very slow browsing even though I have a good connection to router. When I type a site in the browser you can see it struggling to resolve it. Using Gmail I get repeated messages from google saying Somethings wrong here and it stops while Google tries to reconnect. I am using DHCP so my PC's DNS is using the routers DNS which in this case is Orcon's dns servers. (121.98.0.1 & .2 Am I better sticking with Orcons DNS or using Googles or OpenDns or whatAny suggestions please

QR codes for network access - something to do similar for IOS?
So there's easy ways of creating QR codes for accessing the wireless at home. With android I think it ca actually connect you.IOS doesn't allow this. And the other thing I don't like is that QR codes generally require a specific app - I can't figure out why neither seem to support QR codes off their native camera apps.Anyway. I think with IOS you can create a device provision profile which can sit of a URL. Ideally though I'd like to link to it somehow.Has anyone played with passbook? the advantage with this is that passbook barcodes are accessible fromthe main ios camera. So if you could get a passbook pass that links to the provisioning profile then you could allow access to say your guest network. For Android I'd probably just do a QR code.
