Hi Guys, Just brought a house that is setup for fibre (thank f for that cause we were on pratically dial up speed adsl)Any advice on what routers (I am assuming you don't have a modem as such) I should get to give good wireless performance?Computers are relatively new macbooks and 2 new smart tv's with built in wireless2 Level house so I am thinking I would be best with 2 routers or a router and an access point. So for say $500 what would you recommend purchasing?I don't know how easy it will be to run a network cable upstairs (as we don't move in for 3 weeks) but I will give it a goo if that's the best option.

Router broadcasting 2 known SSID and one unknown SSID
I have recently noticed that my router, Linksys EA6700, is broadcasting three different signals, where I am only expecting two. When I say recently, I mean I have used the android Wifi Analyzer app by farproc in the past, and never seen the new ? network before.5GHz Named correctly with a mac of c8:d7:19:55:6c:cc2.4GHz Named correctly with a mac of c8:d7:19:55:6c:cb2.4Ghz Called '?' ca:d7:19:55:6c:cdIt is a near duplicate, but not quite. Can someone please explain to me why the mac that identifies the manufacturer is different? Ie starts with ca:d7:19 instead of c8:d7:19. Why is it even here in the first place?I know it is my router, as any changes to the 2.4GHz network is mirrored by the ? network. The router is a Linksys EA6700.Thanks

WiFi dropout problem
Hi All,Hoping you guys could take a look at the attached images and offer any advice as to what I might do in regards to my home WiFi connection that frequently drops out (gets stuck on the "connecting to..." part of loading websites for about 20 seconds). I'm on a UFB 100/20 connection with 2Degrees using a FritzBox 7490. I'm pretty confident the problem is not the ISP as when this happens it's not even possible to connect to my router through the web interface. The router is placed at the other end of my house, but it's a small house so I don't think that is the problem. I suspect the problem is the number of WiFi networks in the area. Would appreciate any advice you can offer that might help.

Use different modem/router with another provider
Hi there,A few years ago we received a Thomson TG585v7 with our new connection to vodafone. Since then we have upgraded and have the Thomson in storage. However I am moving out and am looking to go with the provider 'Unlimited Internet' at my new house and was wondering if I would be able to configure the Thomson to work with the new connection even though it was sent to us set up for vodafone? Thanks

Home Ethernet Cabling HELP!
Hi guys,Just bought a house, moving into it the I noticed the ONT is sitting in the garage under the house, inside a small room. Inside this room is a AC unit and 24 cat6 cables hanging out the ceiling connected to a patch panel (Its only a metal plate with Ethernet port on the front). I think the guy that owned the house was into IT stuff. Now I've google and looked at some diagrams and my knowledge is next to nothing when it comes to networks....I want to get internet inside the house.Do I need a switch thing to connect to the patch panel? And then connect the switch to the router to get internet on all the Ethernet points in the house? I have NO idea what to do to get internet to the Ethernet points!Basically I just want internet in my home, or do I get Chorus to relocate the ONT? I can then just plug my router in an BOOM done.Ethernet throughout the house does sound nice!

Recommendations for a wi-fi extender
Just moved into a new much bigger single level house, the 2nd lounge at the other end of the house has poor wi-fi so looking at an extender to reach down there.I currently have a TP-Link TD-W8960N router and if I can get a good signal to the 2nd lounge I'd want one with an ethernet connection on it to run a switch for some non wi-fi devices there.

Wall mountable router for Vodafone UFB required
Hi all,I just got my UFB installed on Thursday. Long story short, the optical box and router are now a bedroom so they didn't have to drill the exposed wooden floor...The optical box is on the wall and the Huawei 659 router is just sitting on the floor next to it..Because the sockets on the router come out the back - it is not suitable for screwing to the wall.Vodafone run the telephone through to the router rather than to ONT, so the telephone line is connected to the modem.Could someone point me in the right direction of a router that will support the phone output? Many thanksGavin

Edgerouter lite + Spark VDSL
HeyI'm receiving an EdgeRouter Lite in the mail very soon (so excited haha). Currently I have Spark VDSL and a Technicolor TG589vn v2 router/modem combo unit. DHCP on our network is handled by a Raspberry Pi, with IP addresses being handed out on the 10.0.0.0/8 subnet. This Pi also hosts a FreeRadius server for WPA2-Enterprise encryption on our WiFi (We use 3x UniFi APs connected to a digital ocean droplet cloud controller) I'm wondering a couple of things, firstly how to configure the technicolor so that it is functioning just as a VDSL bridge for the EdgeRouter so that I don't have a Double NAT. I've read that you can set it up in bridge mode but am unsure about this option. Secondly what would the correct configuration be on the EdgeRouter to work on Spark VDSL? I hear these units can be a pain to setup from older forum posts.Once the EdgeRouter is all installed and stable i'm going to turn off the DHCP on the Pi and instead use the EdgeRouter for this. My thinking was wired devices will be plugged into a switch in Eth1 and receive a 10.1.x.x IP address, while WiFI APs will connect to a switch in Eth2 and receive a 10.2.x.x address. Any thoughts on this and how it would be setup? Some extra info:Technicolor IP: 10.0.100.1Pi IP: 10.0.100.100(all devices that require a static IP are assigned a 10.0.100.x address)Thanks for your help, please suggest better ways to setup my network if you can!

iPhone not connecting to exchange from remote office via Cisco VPN
User has just started to complain that his mail app is not connecting to exchange when connected to the remote office wifi.Has previously been working fine to my knowledge. Doesn't anyone know of any changes to IOS 9.x (prob SSL likely as we do use a self signed cert) that might have caused this to stop working? We have a central office with a Windows 2008 R2 DC and two branch offices connected via Cisco IPSEC VPN. The DC also does DNS for both branch offices and has been up and running for several years without issue. Exchange 2010 is hosted at the central site and users log onto the DC access Exchnage via Outlook from both remote offices.I understand that as the central office has ssl and smtp port forwarded that both of these services are inaccessible via the VPN but to my knowledge iPhone activesync clients have not had any issue connecting previously.Thinking I need a sanity check.

Bizzare Airplay issue - Ive run out of ideas!!
Hey guys,I have spent the past 3 days trawling the internet trying to work out what I cant get Airplay to work in a number of different configurations. Something's really wrong but I don't know where to start/continue.I have Vodafone cable (don't get me started on the massive amount of issues I'm having with dropouts and extended outages, but that's another story) running off a Technicolor TC7210 - Cable modem/router. Attached to one LAN port via a LONG LAN cable to the other end of the house is a Netgear N600 DGND3700v2 in wireless AP mode. Below are the basic configuration changes from Default.Technicolor TC7210:- Modem Login User and Password changed - gotta keep things secure- DHCP scope changed to X.X.X.21-199- I use 2-20 for Static IPs and 200 onwards for additional network hardware (WAY overkill I know)- I have 5 port forwards for various things - None are common ports used by anythingNetgear N600 DGND3700v2:- Modem Login User and Password changed- DHCP disabled- IP set to X.X.X.200- Wireless in AP modeI have a Win7 PC connected to the Technicolour via a cable. IP static at X.X.X.2. Used for:- Storage PC- Plex server- Plex Home Theatre- Latest iTunes installed (fresh)- Has 5K player installed for testing (an airplay server)- Spotify PC- Does have DNS settings for Unblock USI also have a Win10 HTPC connected to the Technicolour via Cable. IP Dynamic with same Unblock US DNS addresses- iTunes installed- Plex HT- Spotify PC- Has 5K player installed for testing (an airplay server)Everything else network related works perfectly including file sharing, network discovery, Spotify connect, MSTSC, printing, internet, plex media, Home automation, no matter how you are connected etc. I think that's all the relevant info. So, whats happening with Airplay??Well here are the scenarios:*iTunes open on Win7 PC OR the HTPC, Plex and 5k closed. iPhone connected to Technicolor OR Netgear Wifi = No airplay icon on either devices at all. Nada!*Plex OR 5k player open on Win7 PC. iPhone on either WIFI = Airplay option pops up on iPhone, but no audio plays when selected. No sign of iPhone as an option on the PC 5K programme though.*Interestingly, if iTunes is open on the PC at the same time as Plex OR 5k, iTunes shows the airplay icon and will play to Plex or 5k. Same goes for the HTPC. BUT neither will play to the others iTunes. So airplay works from anything (including iTunes) to Plex or 5k from wired PCs through the Technicolor modem, but not TO iTunes.*Win8 Surface connected to Technicolor Wifi with iTunes open on Win7 PC OR HTCP = no airplay options anywhere. As soon as one or the other has Plex or 5k open, airplay will play to it. So airplay works from iTunes to plex or 5k from wifi to wired, via Technicolour from windows to windows...but not iTunes to iTunes*Have tried the HTPC both wired and wireless to the Netgear switch and no change to the above. So my summary is:Windows iTunes wont airplay to any other windows iTunes no matter how its connectedWindows iTunes wont play or receive airplay to/from an iPhone no matter how its connectediTunes WILL airplay to Plex or 5k no matter how its connectediPhone will not register or stream airplay to iTunes at alliPhone will register airplay to plex or 5k, but wont stream to itSo.......how on earth do I go about fault finding this mess? Should mention I have tried all the basics - disable windows firewall, restart everything, check through all the router settings, reinstalled iTunes/Bonjour etc.Your help would be much appreciated!

Disabling Password Protected Sharing
I have a Windows 7 PC that I use as a file server and general purpose server (cloud print, murmur etc). I've always used password protected sharing. I have these stupid Onkyo streaming devices that, for whatever reason, can only connect to it if password protected sharing is disabled. Is there much risk in turning off password protected sharing on a private network, assuming that one is happy with local clients having unlimited access to all shares?

Guidance on ceiling mount Wifi AP
Looking for recommendations on a ceiling mount wifi AP for home use. Currently on VF UFB 100/50 with stock Huawei gateway. AP not in best position to cover all areas (and gateway not easily moveable). Believe a single AP in upstairs hallway will do the trick. Ceiling mount required for WAF. Can run ethernet to roof, power difficult but not impossible.Desired:- ceiling mount/ 'smoke alarm' form factor (white) - web gui (no CLI/ mgmt app)- 2.4 + 5Ghz- 802.11g/n (AC optional)- POE preferred- under $200 if possibleUbiquity seems to get a few mentions here but some suggest it's overly complex for residential use case. Appreciate your thoughts...

Advice on Uni-Fi Pro
Hi. I have a Uni-Pro which I have managed to adopt and get operational again after a factory reset. It seems to have upgraded the unit to 4.7.6 from the 3.2.7 it was before. I am trying to find a way to accomodate my following requirements: Connect my 2.4Ghz only devices, some of which only support WEP (Thanks very much Mitsubishi) and some which support WPA (Belkin WeeMo). I also have my other devices like my Tablets, and Phones, which support 5.8Ghz.It's very important that from my phones and tablets (Or at least 1) I can manage the devices on the 2.4Ghz stuff (Otherwise I can't control my aircons and Weemo's).I can't see where in the config I can do that.Anyone able to offer some advice? (No it's not an option to not use WEP on my AirCon Unit). As best I can tell you are supposed to either set up two networks, one using wep and 2.4ghz, the other WPA and 5ghz but I can't see where in the interface to do this?

Running a new cable for adsl
Quick question if anyone can help:Our new house only has adsl2, and a poor connection at that. Looking to run a new line from the external box disconnecting all other connections that are present here. My question is:If I only run one new cable, remove all other cables, and only have the adsl router plugged in (naked plan) im assuming i wont need a master filter, or would that also help improve any signal? We dont need any other phone jacks or landlines ever again. Moved from having fibre so need to get the best that i can from this poor situation :(

New UFB connection, now want to get my home network up to speed
Hi Guys, Today I was lucky enough to get UFB 200/20 installed. Currently I have an Air Port Extreme model A 1408 in bridge mode, this is plugged into the Spark HG659b router ---- to ONT.I also have an airport extreme set up to extend the network at the back end of the house. Small house 90M2.I am finding my wireless speeds all over the show. standing in front of the base station I can get 200 down, however if I move around a corner or to the middle of the house I get around 40-50mbps. I've tried locating the Airport base station higher, and that may have helped a little.Just wondering if there are any tips I could use to better my home network make the most of the UFB. The extreme and express base stations are a must as we are a house full of Apple devices and use Airplay a lot.

Mikrotik 951g-2hnd on Spark UFB
My son and I purchased one of these to replace the Huawei 630 which died. We followed this thread religiously.http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=161676But sadly it did not work. Well kind of!We did manage to get something out of LAN1 when we changed a label in PPP to TNZ_FIBRE and redid the firewall settings as per the above instructions.Has anyone successfully got one of these routers going on Spark UFB?We purchased the Mikrotik as it will be an excellent learning tool.

Wifi: Alternatives to Huawei HG659
Hi folks,I am wondering if anyone can recommend some alternatives to the Huawei HG659 that came with the cable install. It is limited in its feature set and functionality for my needs (I think fine for general purpose usage) - I am also having an issue with the 5Ghz wifi randomly disconnected (although 2.4 seems fine).I used to use an Apple Airport extreme which was very stable and allowed my to do all of my internal routing, static IPs, port forwarding as well as use 5Ghz wfi . However, I can no longer use this as it does not have the VLAN feature required to connect to the cable modem.Any new unit would need to have at least 4 x GB Ethernet ports, VLAN tagging, 5Ghz (or multiband support) and be pretty fast. Also needs to support port forwarding (by IP), static IPs (DHCP) and good routing capabilities (not just by protocol). My signal range requirements is about 15-20 meters.Much thanks.

HG659 contains major VoIP security issue?
Hi all,My friend who is using Fibre at home just gave me their Vodafone provided HG659 router and I noticed there is a major potential security problem on the VoIP setting somewhere. What happens is I was trying to use it as a standalone AP but failed as described inhttp://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=185148So, I also upgraded its firmware to the latest, i.e. this one as well as reset the router to factory default several timeshttp://help.vodafone.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/24400/ Since I failed to make it work as a standalone AP by having HG659's WAN port connected to the LAN port of my internet connected router, I decide to connect the HG659 router's WAN port directly to the Fibre modem. Not surprisingly, HG659 acquires internet access this way. However, once it is internet connected, it also manage to download VoIP configurations from somewhere and its VoIP light is green, i.e. the VoIP setting is successfully registered and working. Inspection of the router's VoIP page shows my friend's home number is showing on the VoIP page. The point is I have already reset the router to factory default and also upgraded its firmware, so there is no way the VoIP settings is coming from the router. I am 100% sure the VoIP page is blank before the HG659 router is connected to internet. In fact, I had tested this at least twice and I am 100% sure the setting magically appears by itself.I have also checked with my Friend who said their Vodafone fibre account is cancelled and they are now using Spark instead.Does anyone know what is going on with the HG659 router? or do you know how to stop this?It seems that the router is downloading VoIP settings from Vodafone or similar...This is a security problem and have great potential to cause problems to those who sold their unused HG659 routers because someone else now have full access to their landline home phone. (There are plenty of people selling Vodafone provided HG659 routers on trademe....)
