Hi all - bit of a newbie at this.Have just had the LFC around to discuss connection - they wont go an extra few metres with the fibre outside, and the only option is a cowboy job down the outside of an internal wall.Just wondering if the connection from the ONT to the router can use powerline adaptors (probably 500mbs model) - this would solve the problem. An issue may be that I currently have a set of powerline adaptors working from the old router to a wireless AP at the other end of the house - this would need to move to the new router.Appreciate any comments.

Better to buy new router or wireless extender for range?
HiJust as the title says. We have had UFB put in to our house, but it went into the garage. It is pretty central in the house so should have OK coverage, but there are a few dead spots, some of which are in places I frequently use my phone. I know a couple of things about wireless, but I also know enough to know I don't know that much at all.Should I keep using the Spark Huawei HG659 and just get a 5GHZ wireless extender to fill in some coverage? Or should I just get a new router with external antennas which will hopefully have a bit more gain?I don't want to spend heaps on a new router and then find it won't work anyway as the problem is not signal strength from the AP, but the client struggling to return packets. In a situation like that, a closer AP should be better, but I have no idea how good a wireless extender really will be.Also, how do you know a router will work on UFB? Looking for an xDSL modem used to be enough, do I need to see if the WAN port can do VLAN 10 and PPPOE? Anyone got any router or AP/Wireless extender recommendations? One last separate, but slightly related question, Should I just set the router to have 2.4 and 5ghz in the same ssid and let the client choose what it connects to, or is it better to separate out the SSIDs by band and force the clients onto one or the other?

4 Bay NAS - Synology or QNAP ?
Looking to replace my Netgear readyNas NV+ but cannot decide between Synology or QNAP.I am simply looking for a robust file server, must be able to hot-swap drives, and be able to sync with cloud servers such as Dropbox.Ideally I would like to keep the cost below $1200 (I already have 4 x 2TB WD "Red" drives)I do not need it to act as a media server as I already have a DS214play which I use for media (via Plex).Am considering the following models :QNAP TS-431Synology DiskStation DS414j / DS416jQNAP TS-451+Synology DiskStation DS416Any advice from anyone who is using the above models or any thoughts about other possibilities will be greatly appreciated.

Wireless repeater or hotspot that allows custom DNS settings?
Hi,Does anyone know of a wireless repeater or hotspot that can take custom DNS settings?I want to create a second wireless network at home using Unlocator DNS settings so I can watch UK TV on my Roku.Ideally a device that could connect to my main wireless network and then broadcast its own would work best, as it wouldn't have to my located next to my modem then. Accessing the Draytek management page in bridge mode?
Hello, before I switch my Vigor 130 to bridge mode and plonk it in front of the DD-WRT router, can someone let me know how I can access the management interface for the Vigor from the LAN after making the change? Do I simply assign it a LAN address from a different private subnet to the one I use on the LAN behind DD-WRT? Anyone else already running this configuration on Big Pipe VDSL?

Help needed (and correct my terminology) - using old DSL model as wireless 'bridge' to LAN
Hey all,I am after some help with 2 things:1. The correct terms2. How to do itWhat I want to do is use a spare DSL modem (I have a couple to choose from) to connect to my existing LAN (Unifi based) and use the LAN ports on the modem to connect devices that live in the garage, without having to run LAN cables out there.I cannot remember the correct terminology, is this a wireless bridge? I am not looking at a extender and I have tried Powerline devices without too much luck (I even wrote a paper on doing that for one of my post-grad courses if anyone is interested). So can I do what I want? This what I want to do ( ~~~ is the wireless signal):LAN -> Unifi ~~~~~~ (spare modem) -> lab servers connected via EthernetI have a Thomson TG858 and a Technicolor TG589v2, as well as a Huawei HG630b.

"Portal Turbocharged Wifi"
Kickstarter currently has a project for the "Portal", a router advertising "turbocharged" wifi.If I'm reading it right, I think it is just able to utilise some of the mid-range channels/frequencies in the 5Ghz range that you can only use if DFS (dynamic frequency selection) is used - channels 50 through 140-ish. Through some cleverness, the Portal can switch between these relatively under-used frequencies. According to the FAQ, "Even the most expensive enterprise-class routers are only able to provide access to ONE channel that can be shared with radar", whereas "Portal is able to provide access to ALL of the channels that can be shared with radar. Channels are monitored for WiFi and LTE traffic, as well as radar, and can move back and forth to avoid radar and interference whenever necessary".I'm curious as to (a) whether I've read this right and (b) whether you would need special hardware at the PC/tablet/phone/other client to make full use of this? Or do standard 5GHz cards include the ability to utilise such bits of the spectrum and it's just the routers that haven't been?Any real world benefits in NZ? Certainly we've got no issues at our place in the 5Ghz (and even 2.4 isn't that bad).It seems to be based on OpenWRT, so if it's clever software instead of hardware might feed back into the open source community.I'm not a buyer/backer. Even if I wanted to play fun and games with freight forwarders (it only ships to North America) I'm well aware that RSM might come knocking if I'm using some funky non-certified device. Just curious as to how it works.

Huawei HG659b Modem - possibly faulty, for free
Hi thereI have a Spark supplied Huawei HG659b modem (business grade for ADSL/UFB). It started playing up on my ADSL so I got a replacement but I never did many tests and for all I know it could even have been a settings issue. It's pretty brand new.I don't like the idea of throwing away something so new and shiny so if any of you like to fiddle with a modem/router and want it for free and can pick up from Onehunga Auckland before Thursday 16 June please message me.

DIY Eero solution?
So, frequently I'm asked by friends and family how to improve their networking setup, and more recently in my case, I've battled with making the most of my new Fibre connection with the poor ONT location chosen by a previous tenant. But in the case of family, one case has become so bad that they've given up on local help and asked me to come down to Hastings and help them out over a weekend.Something that's caught my attention recently, was the smartly presented, simplified eero WiFi product that just launched which builds a "mesh network" effectively a collection of range extenders, offering one fast, unified Wifi network throughout a home. But at $499 US + shipping, it's a bit out of reach. So, I ask how you would build out a network (with which products) throughout a home that offered a similar experience, but at a more affordable price? In the case of my family members, I'll be looking to find options as follows;A powerline kit for a fastest possible fixed connection in one other locationA WiFi range extender, as opposed to a seperate AP, to maintain just the one SSID2-3 locations throughout the homeI suspect that TP-Link's Powerline with wireless extender kit could help with that (does it extend the same SSID via the powerline as expected by the phrase extender?)Cheers

faulty internet comms
Not sure if this is the right forum for this but we have been having problems since January 2015 and are getting desperate. We moved our accounting business home for medical reasons some years ago. In some ways we have been ahead of the curve re "cloud" accounting (but most clients still use desktop software which we support with TeamViewer).Last January our router died. It was just an entry level machine but we decided to go upmarket a little since we now ran our business from home. We may have had problems before then - but they've been bad since. We eventually realised that we still had some Cat5 cabling in places, and also had a 10Mb switch. So we replaced those, as we have recently replaced our old VOIP box which expired. We've had Chorus in and they found some "unusual" things (we've only ever had Telecom in) and also reduced our peak performance marginally to minimise problems. We also had outside help in in the early days - but they were worse than useless.Mostly we've had our ISP (WXC) monitor and test the system. We've thought of changing ISP's, but we've been with them ever since we upgraded to broadband (remember dial-up days when the internet was smallish?). We've had really good service and we don't think swapping would be good. Plus we haven't found an ISP who would provide their service, including VOIP, and a home phone (for medical emergencies) (not that WXC do that hence we're caught with the stupid double charge that Chorus introduced last year). The last straw came when a TeamViewer session with a client failed - badly. We rushed out and bought another modem/router. And the problem's vanished. For a fortnight. We swapped back to the original router - and had no major problems for a month or so. Now they're back again. Sometimes a soft reset does the trick - but usually a hard reset is required.Having tried two different routers we really think the issue is not the router. But we've reached the end of our ability - in fact we reached this a long time ago. So if anybody has any suggestions on what we might be able to do about this I'd reeally appreciate it.

What;s your recommended "recommended router"
I am the de facto help desk for my family and friends (like many others here I'm guessing).Previously, I've made the mistake of recommending tech items that I thought were good/have a cool feature/were good value for money. In the router space for example, this was frequently, "get a TP Link [or earlier, WRT54GL] and put DDWRT on it". This invariably proved to be a mistake since you can guess who actually got to put DDWRT on it and provide support forever more. Somehow tinkering with my own stuff to correct issues ( my own oversights) is far more fun than tinkering with other people's stuff. What's your go-to recommendation for friends/family that want a new router? I am looking for something as straightforward and robust as possible, rather than something that has cool features or awesome (but potentially flakey) performance. And while I am currently dipping my toe in the EdgeRouter pond at home, neither this nor a Mikrotik will be a starter in these circumstances. I just don't know enough (yet - touch wood) to be recommending one of these to someone else. This particular query was prompted by a friend on HFC cable with a cisco modem, so it only needs to be a router, not modem+router recommendation. If it makes a difference, the house is pretty big and one of the first things I will be doing is suggesting he wire in (ethernet or powerline) some additional access points in place of the *6* wireless wifi extenders that have currently been deployed (that's not a typo). A recommendation of router + 1-2 access points that meet the initial criteria would be even better. And I don't mind helping out (its a good friend, so "phone a pro" isn't that helpful in this context), but ideally I do want to help him set it up and then forget about it.

How many of you bother with DNSSEC/DNSCrypt? Impact to DNS resolution speed?
I'm currently using it on my router- it was installed by default, but I'm thinking about removing it and seeing if it speeds up DNS resolution. I'm on fiber (100/20), and even local sites appear to be less snappy than what I would expect. Is anyone else using dnscrypt or similar? Would be interested to know what your performance is like?Off the back of that, even whether its worth it- how many people actually use it?

Edgerouter WAN+2LAN wizard: don't forget to turn on offloading
After a bunch of scratching my head on why my speed tests weren't going great guns, I had a poke around google for others using their ERL as a WAN+2LAN + PPPOE client setup. For some reason, it seems that hardware offloading is *off* by default when you use the wizard to setup the ERL. Turning it on made a huge difference in speed test results for me.You can check whether it is on in your config tree, but if it isn't, this worked for me:configureset system offload ipv4 pppoe enableset system offload ipv4 vlan enableset system offload ipsec enable set system offload ipv4 forwarding enable commitsave

The router guide - what is best.
I keep seeing these threads on Geekzone and since I am a bit of a router horde (the Edgerouter for me is by-far the best) I thought I'd better make a thread with my experiences, and what works best for the average home dependant on some situations, budget, features and ease of use and include other experiences in an easy to find and Google place.First Category - all in one routers:These routers are best if you're wanting something with everything built into one unit that offer decent WiFi.1) Huawei HG659 - Supports all connection types, suitable for Gigatown connections, decent WiFi and available cheaply. This router is currently provided by Spark, BigPipe and Vodafone however is designed as a home CPE device so doesn't have too many configurable features. Also, not suitable if you're one to use Netflix unblockers but for your general purpose all in one router this is a hard one to beat. Also, has VoIP.2) Netcomm NF8AC - Buy from Here - This router supports all connection types, a decent array of features. As far as all in one devices go if you have to buy one then let it be this one. Supports Gigatown connections and has pretty good WiFi too (suitable for a small home).3) ASUS DSL-AC68U - Buy from Here - Excellent WiFi, features and performance. A bit more pricey than the above options however if you're wanting something a little more advanced it is one to consider.Second Category - routers only (advanced users):If you're wanting something a little more advanced going for one of these is a surefire bet. Just don't expect the most simple to use interfaces or a 5min setup if you're not experienced.1) Edgerouter Lite - Buy from here - This is my personal router and supports everything including insane packet switching speeds (totally fine for Gigatown). There is a basic tutorial on how to set this up on UFB here however it wasn't intended to be a go-to guide. When I reconfigure mine I might make a guide however don't know when that'll be as they're damn stable.2) MikroTik RouterBOARD RB750Gr2 - Buy from here - This is an advanced and cheap router in the Mikrotik range. Doesn't have WiFi, can route around 300Mbit and is great for people who don't want to spend an arm and a leg on an advanced capability router.Missing: A Mikrotik router that can route a Gigatown connection - if anyone has any suggestions less than $250 let me know.Third Category - routers w/ access points for UFB:These routers are for your more advanced users that want the flexibility of doing what they want - and have alternative OS support (such as Tomato and DD-WRT). Currently, there are no all in one units that support alternative operating systems and there likely never will.1) Netgear R7000 - Buy from here, however places like Noel Leemings often have sales. - Can support a full Gigatown connection on Advanced Tomato and stock firmware, also was my router before I had the Edgerouter. Rock solid, runs cool and has great WiFi (better than the all in one router's above).Missing: Other routers in this area either ones with alternative OS support or without. Post below.----If you've got any more suggestions then post them below. I'll keep this post updated as I honestly configure so many of these damn things so have experience in quite a wide variety. If you're just wanting better WiFi look at grabbing something like a Xclaim XI-3 which is an excellent access point offering solid performance, and is simple to set up for your standard home user.

VDSL in Bridge mode
Hi!I have this problem.I have a TP-LINK Archer C7 for my internet and WIFI connection, wich was connected to a cheap pstn modem-router, provided by my ISP, which was set to Bridge mode, so the TP-LINK could do the PPPoE and work as a router. And everything was working fine, till I desided to upgrade my connection to VDSL. So my ISP sent me a new VDSL modem-router, which is another one cheap s...t. I tried to do the same type of connection, so I set the modem to Bridge mode and connected the TP-LINK by ethernet. The problem is that I noticed that when TP-LINK connects by PPPoE, the connection speed is much lower, then if I set the modem to PPPoE and use the TP-LINK only as AP.What is ther reason for this, can somebody explain?
