We have two access points in the house, one at each end of the house effectively. Both have the same SSID and password. We also have another access point with a separate SSID and password. Some mobile devices switch seamlessly between either of the two access point with the same name but others refuse to swap over and in the case of my wifes S7 Edge will revert to Mobile Data rather than swap to the other access point. It also won't swap to the access point with the different SSID.If you turn WiFi on the phone of and back on it will connect to the stronger signal.Does anyone have any suggestions on how this might be fixed so that the device will switch automatically between access points?

Home network design feedback
Hey, i am designing my home network and would like to gather feedback if there is a better way i should do it. I haven't contemplated using VLAN's at the moment but if its something that is recommended then i could visit it. Network layout is as per below:

Using AirPort Express with Spark HG659b keeps bringing down all WiFi networks
Hi. I'm trying to extend my WiFi network using an AirPort Express. The Spark router HG659b has a limited number of device connections and I need the additional device connections the AirPort provides as I connect a lot of devices over WiFi through my home business.Additionally I've been trying to use a Powerline connection with 2x TP-LINK TL-PA411 adapters to get better speed in my office which does not currently have ethernet. The problem I have is the WiFi and Powerline networks will work fine for a short period, anything from 10 minutes to ~24 hours then all of a sudden all networks go down; neither the AirPort Express nor the 2x Spark router networks will connect to the internet or to the router. Unplugging the AirPort Express will usually get the Spark router restarted so I suspect it's something to do with that. The problem occurs with and without Powerline however seems to occur quicker while using Powerline. Rebooting the router also seems to work most of the time.I tried to use the AirPort express purely as a range extender but while it appears to be configured properly it will extend the Spark router network but not connect to the internet.I've considered extending ethernet to the office but given the issue appears to be with the handoff between the AirPort Express and the Spark router I'm not sure this will improve things as I will still need the AirPort Express in my office.Any ideas or experience dealing with a similar issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!Fraser

Help with my New Build Home Network setup
We are in the process of building our new home. It's a fairly large Single Storey home 275m2. I've been thinking about the networking setup of our house. But I want to ask you guys what you think as I'm no expert. I've been trying to do a bit of research and reading other posts on here trying to decide what equipment to get etc...So far It's going to go like this:-*Star topology to the garage like all new houses are these days.*Was thinking about getting the Dynamix R10WM9 9RU 10" Mini Cabinet.*Dynamix 12 Port Cat6 Patch Panel for 10" cabinet*Ubiquiti 5 port EdgeRouter PoE*16 Port Gigabit Switch (Not sure which one yet)*Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-AC-Pro Access Point ceiling mounted to central part of the house*Cat6 runs to 11 spots in the house. What are you thoughts on the equipment chosen? What Gigabit Switch can you guys recommend that's not too expensive and fits into this cabinet? I was looking at the Linksys 16 Port Unmanaged LGS116-AU Switch. But I don't think it's going to fit in there as both the mini cabinet and Linksys Switch are 280mm wide. Also regarding the Cat6 Cable. I see that Cat6 Cable isn't all the same, some Cat6 are 24AWG and some are 23AWG and also some are 250MHz and some 550MHz. Does it matter which you get? Is it better to get the thicker 23AWG gauge and 550MHz?TIA

Community WiFi ISP? anyone done one?
Hi.I live out in Gebbies Valley... We have good old DSL and its somewhat flaky if you are lucky to get it.So some of us have started talking and we have come up with a idea about community ISP.Key point here... the local exchange has fiber to it.. i think installed but don't know.RBI is not available here and may never be..50% of the houses have less than 1.5MB and a lot of people work from home around here.we are about 20 minutes outside christchurch and the area is being cut up more and more but the old exchange and copper is getting overloaded. So what we are thinking is: WiFi from local exchange to repeater site.. then out to houses.we have about 50 houses and about 30 of them are keen to join in and put up cash.So my question is has anyone here done this?is there anything i should think about? How do i go about talking to the right person at Chorus about this?Is there a better way.. something we may have missed? (don't say sat dish)..I have done a lot of WiFi long range links before and will be getting Go WiFi down here to design the system.Feed back needed.. Cost wise we are thinking 50K+ at this point (round numbers and depending on the fiber link).

So I got 'hacked' last night...
I spent a bit of time last night having a play with my new Vodafone TC7210 cable modem and trying to figure out its nuances around static IPs, and later on some conflicting DHCP server settings I was encountering on my HTPC. (I'm wondering if this could have been the start of the hack) I also had my RT-AC68 wifi router active as it was what WAS doing the DHCP just fine. Before the DHCP issues were noticed, I had decided to pick a random port to open and have a play and see how remote management of the HTPC would go. I picked port 9091 and apparently I should google these things as that's a common torrent port... Anyway I ended up opening the port on both the modem and the wifi router because I was playing with what I thought was doing the DHCP stuff at about 9pm.I figured i'd just leave it for a while and let my wife watch some TV off the HTPC, and 10min later she starts complaining that i'm moving the mouse around and making "random menus pop up"... Eventually a notepad window appears and somebody writes something along the lines of "hi from cyber-somethingorother :)"At this point I pulled the power from the modem and got a little worried... I have since malware checked the machine and can't find anything untoward so think it's clean.I've also since reset and renamed almost everything, but what is more likely? That they got in through the open port (if so, does that mean my HTPC user account and password got hacked in less than 10 min?) Or that they got in through the wifi, and also hacked my different HTPC password? The HTPC has a username and password for accessing everything but I do have UnifiedRemote installed which lets me control it with my phone as it doesn't have a local keyboard or mouse I don't believe this is password protected, but would give someone control if on the network and they knew what was installed. They wouldn't be able to view the video output though unless they had a RDP connection I guess?I'm wondering if they were on our network before the ports were opened and were causing the DHCP conflict that the HTPC was having. And I'm still unsure about was how they took control of the machine while we were also using it.Either way, I still don't feel like i'm out of the woods, and will have to go through and edit all my account passwords today. It's a lesson I feel I may have been lucky enough to get away with, without too much pain, but worrying nonetheless.I'll hang my head in shame in preparation for everyone who will come on board to tell me what I did wrong.

Firewall question for you Mikrotik experts...
I've just ditched our constantly freezing TP-link router and replaced it with a Mikrotik RB951G-2HnD, connected on eth1 to a Draytek Vigor 120 ADSL modem running in PPPoE passthrough mode.Everything seems to be working smoothly (and with much stronger wifi signal too), but I'm not quite sure whether I've set up the firewall rules correctly. The PPPoE client is running on the eth1 interface, and I've changed the default firewall rules in-interface from "eth1" to "pppoe-out1". Is this correct, or should the rules be on eth1? Any other criticisms gratefully accepted too - I'm new to the networking side of things, and it's interesting to learn, but the Mikrotik certainly exposes a scary number of options.Current settings are below (hopefully with all the passwords removed). The Draytek modem is at 192.168.1.1, and I've managed to set things up so that I can still log in to it at that address, although I may have done that in a less than perfect way too... /interface bridgeadd admin-mac=xxxxxxxxxxxxx auto-mac=no comment=defconf name=bridge/interface ethernetset [ find default-name=ether2 ] name=ether2-masterset [ find default-name=ether3 ] master-port=ether2-masterset [ find default-name=ether4 ] master-port=ether2-masterset [ find default-name=ether5 ] master-port=ether2-master/interface pppoe-clientadd add-default-route=yes disabled=no interface=ether1 name=pppoe-out1 \ use-peer-dns=yes user=user@xtra.co.nz/ip neighbor discoveryset ether1 discover=noset bridge comment=defconf/interface wireless security-profilesadd authentication-types=wpa2-psk eap-methods="" management-protection=\ allowed mode=dynamic-keys name="WLAN profile" supplicant-identity=""/interface wirelessset [ find default-name=wlan1 ] band=2ghz-b/g/n country="new zealand" \ disabled=no distance=indoors frequency-mode=regulatory-domain mode=\ ap-bridge security-profile="WLAN profile" ssid=test \ wireless-protocol=802.11/ip pooladd name=dhcp ranges=192.168.88.10-192.168.88.254/ip dhcp-serveradd address-pool=dhcp disabled=no interface=bridge lease-time=2h name=defconf/interface bridge portadd bridge=bridge comment=defconf interface=ether2-masteradd bridge=bridge comment=defconf interface=wlan1/ip addressadd address=192.168.88.1/24 comment=defconf interface=ether2-master network=\ 192.168.88.0add address=192.168.1.0 interface=ether1 network=192.168.1.1/ip dhcp-clientadd comment=defconf dhcp-options=hostname,clientid interface=ether1/ip dhcp-server networkadd address=192.168.88.0/24 comment=defconf gateway=192.168.88.1/ip dnsset allow-remote-requests=yes/ip dns staticadd address=192.168.88.1 name=router/ip firewall filteradd chain=input comment="defconf: accept ICMP" protocol=icmpadd chain=input comment="defconf: accept established,related" \ connection-state=established,relatedadd action=drop chain=input comment="defconf: drop all from WAN" \ in-interface=pppoe-out1add action=fasttrack-connection chain=forward comment="defconf: fasttrack" \ connection-state=established,relatedadd chain=forward comment="defconf: accept established,related" \ connection-state=established,relatedadd action=drop chain=forward comment="defconf: drop invalid" \ connection-state=invalidadd action=drop chain=forward comment=\ "defconf: drop all from WAN not DSTNATed" connection-nat-state=!dstnat \ connection-state=new in-interface=pppoe-out1/ip firewall natadd action=masquerade chain=srcnat comment="defconf: masquerade" \ out-interface=pppoe-out1add action=masquerade chain=srcnat dst-address=192.168.1.0/24 out-interface=\ ether1/ip serviceset telnet disabled=yesset ssh disabled=yes/system clockset time-zone-name=Pacific/Auckland/system clock manualset time-zone=+12:00/system ledsset 0 interface=wlan1/system routerboard settingsset init-delay=0s protected-routerboot=disabled/tool mac-serverset [ find default=yes ] disabled=yesadd interface=bridge/tool mac-server mac-winboxset [ find default=yes ] disabled=yesadd interface=bridge

IP Address for Modem and for Router
I recently moved to using a separate modem and router (in the garage). When I set up the Modem it was 192.168.1.1. Then I ran a piece of software which set the modem in bridge mode.I set up the Router, again with 192.168.1.1 and both are working OK.Later it dawned on me that I couldn't access the Modem using 192.168.1.1.If I can give the modem a separate IP address from the Router then would I be able to access the Modem? If so, how should I do this:Router: 192.168.1.1 (and IP addresses to start at 192.168.1.3)?Modem: 192.168.1.2?or should it be vice-versaor something else.

IPv6 Relay Error?
Hi all,I was poking around on my ISP's site today (Mynxnet) and noticed that they offer IPv6 now. I went to my router configuration, enabled IPv6 and set it to Automatic. This appeared to work for a minute or two (I got the green IPv6 Geekzone logo and the associated badge, and test-ipv6.com reported 7/10) then it dropped back to v4 and my router reported "IPv6 Relay Error". Rebooting everything resulted in the same error.I know next to nothing about IPv6 so I'm not sure whether this is a configuration issue at my end, an issue with the ISP, or something else. Does anyone know what this error means and what to do about it?The router is an older Apple AirPort Extreme (one of the flat 802.11n models) and my computer is running the latest OS X. The AirPort is connected straight to the ONT and uses PPPoE.Any ideas? It doesn't really concern me if I don't get this working, but I'm curious now :)

DDNS Slow for CCTV system
Hey Guys, I have just setup a NVR server with Blue Iris and a couple of Hikvision IP cams. All works great. I have a no-ip.org account as i dont have a static IP address at home. I have setup my camera application to connect to e.g. http://sam***.no-ip.org which then connects me to my cameras from outside my local network. Port forwarding has been done etc.. The cameras stream very nicely and without and issues. When i get home and use this application in my Local network/via wifi. it lags really bad. If i change the connection address to the actual local IP e.g 192.168.1.20, the stream is perfect.I guess when im using the DDNS address, the application goes out to the internet into no-ip.org service, then redirects itself back to my network. But surely that shouldn't cause such bad lag?Is there something i can do locally to redirect that DDNS address to the local PC? or any ideas on how to fix the speed issues? It will be a pain, to keep chopping and changing from DDNS address to local address when im home or out.thanks,Sam

Help configure Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite with PPPoE and VLAN
I am having trouble configuring my ERL for Slingshot UFB that requires PPPoE and VLAN tagging. Would appreciate your wisdom that helps me tame this beast. My endeavour so far:Upgraded to V1.7 firmware - working fine as I can log in and access its functions through the new web-based UITried Andrew's (Aredwood) config file but got error message: Upload failedTried to configured one PPPoE WAN port with two bridged LAN ports via Wizard tab: no luck - cannot log back in after reboot. I did change the ethernet cable from Eth 0 to Eth 1 after reboot. When tried to ping this ERL from my Mac, it shows inconsistently with either 'host unknow' or 'time-out'.Any tip on what the next step is I may take? Am I not doing the right thing or maybe the hardware has been damaged (I did a few hard-reset during the past couple days)?Apology for those rookie questions and thanks in advance for your kind support. I searched across the forum but couldn't find any instruction that I can follow.

Linksys RE6500 Wifi Range Extender Problem
I have just bought one of these from Harvey Norman's where it was reduced to $120. It has 802.1 AC1200 5 GHz capability so I was going to use it to extend the range of my Spark supplied Huawei HG659b Wifi router that supports both the 2.4 and faster 5 GHz spectrums. The router works perfectly OK on both spectrums and I have smart TVs, phones, a Windows laptop computer and an Android tablet successfully connected. However, when I try and set up the Linksys extender it picks up the 2.4 signal only and won't detect the 5 GHz one. I have tried everything I can think of, even moved the extender closer to make sure it's close enough but to no avail. I have checked the router firmware too - it has the latest.Anyone experience this problem or know what I can do to fix it?

Affordable no frills data cabling sought in Auckland for residential install. Mt Eden/Epsom area ASAP.
Hi I need someone to install Cat5E/Cat6, extruded mount rj45 jacks, and possibly a 4-5way patch panel amongst 4 rooms. One room near the VDSL router will have the patch panel and a gigabit switch which we already own. The other 3 will just have a single socket each most likely. Each cable run is approximately 5-10 metres max.I started doing this myself, but managed to destroy my cheap plastic punchdown tool, then used a flat edge screwdriver instead which (if I'm guessing correctly) leveraged the blade connectors too far apart on the back of the sockets so that they did not puncture the insulation on the cable cores properly. Lessons learned. As I've already drilled holes, and purchased face plates which are now screwed on to the wall I'd like someone to add on to what I've already done so my time was not wasted.Thanks. Personal messages most welcome.(I've had two very expensive qoutes from companies found in the yellow pages already, including one from a pushy SA guy who insisted that he knew better what we wanted than I did and kept trying to upsell us extra stuff we do not want or need. I just want someone affordable who listens to what we want, and does it.)
