SFTP patch cables

I've been using standard Cat6 UTP leads for a long time. I'm now dipping my toes in the water with Cat6A SFTP cables.

Do these need any form of device end support to function effectively as a shielded cable? IE: Switch port, NIC, etc. I am not using any patch panels or wall sockets with these cables at this stage.

Legality and/or morality of campus wifi

I have recently been asked about the use of a wifi service using Zenbu, particularly when charging for wifi access.

There used to be, maybe still are, ISP/telco contractual prohibitions around internet access sharing by the principal purchaser, because in effect the Zenbu owner becomes a 'reseller' of a product they are paying a domestic rate for … this was mostly understoodduring the early days of pre-determined data caps etc. These days with unlimited data, perhaps it's no longer a consideration?

Is there legal ramifications to 'on-selling' internet access?

Netgear Orbi vs Google Wifi vs Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD?

Further to my recent thread about improving wifi in my house, I took the advice of the crowd and decided to go for Mesh wifi as opposed to extending by powerline adaptors and extenders. However, the $500-$600 for Ubiquiti and Google Wifi are out of my price range for now.

I noticed that the Netgear Orbi 3-pack is in the PBTech Cyber Monday sale - what are peoples' thoughts about this option compared tyo the Google & Ubiquiti options? The Netgear units look a bit big, but the specs sound good.

How to have a headless PC setup a wireless hotspot automatically?

$

How things are now:

I have a PC which runs Windows 7 in a headless fashion with no monitor and keyboard, etc. At home when it starts it automatically joins the home Wifi network. I can then remote into this said headless PC from another computer (the "controlling PC") which is also on the same home Wifi network. I have the router assign a reserved IP address to this headless PC, so I know what IP address to use with Remote Desktop. This is all good.

What I want to achieve:

However, there are occasions I would like to use this headless PC outside the range of the home Wifi network. When this happens, both the headless PC and the controlling PC would not be able to connect to a Wifi network, and Remote Desktop obviously will not work.

What I have tried:

Now I have read about using netsh to create "virtual" access point. I have tried the following successfully:

On the headless PC, while it is still connected to the home Wifi network:

Run Cmd as administrator

Run netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow "ssid=SSID" "key=KEY" keyUsage=persistent

Run netsh wlan start hostednetwork

On the controlling PC:

Connect to "SSID" network created by netsh

Find out what IP address itself got assigned (e.g. 192.168.173.xx)

Remote desktop into the headless PC using 192.168.173.1, changing 'xx' to '1'

My questions:

The steps in the above experiment are of little use to me, as they require me setting up the virtual AP with the headless PC connected to the home Wifi network.

Even if I am to put a startup script to run netsh automatically, if the headless PC is not connected to the home Wifi DHCP, how is it going to get an IP address?

And even if it manages to get an IP address, how do I find out what it is so I can put that into Remote Desktop?

Is there some way I can automate the above process? i.e. If the headless PC fails to connect to the home network, I am hoping it will automatically turn itself into a virtual AP and giving itself a pre-determined IP such that I can remote into it?

I hope I have made my questions clear....Any help would be very much appreciated.

Secure way to host a public server

Hi, I looking at throwing up an old quake world server for the community and was wondering the most secure was to do this?

Im just using a residential Orcon connection so only have one public facing address.. I'm using a pfsense firewall and thought perhaps I could setup a separate VLAN to put the server on and port forward to that server keeping it outside of my home network

If that is completely wrong, you have probably already guessed I have no idea what im doing here :) but i'm a computer/network hobbyist so would like to give whatever is suggested as best practice for my type of setup

or am I being paranoid that someone might gain access to my network by knowing my IP address?

Setting up ASUS DSL-AC68U for Vodafone VDSL

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has used this router on VF VDSL? If so, could I get a peek at the settings you are using? Not all sure which of the 3 options that the setup process list I should be using. Not very familiar with VF so its all a bit confusing. The current Huawei router works fine and does not appear to have a username/password associated with it so I wonder how it authenticates to VF?

WIFI HELP - MESH OR OTHER SOLUTION TO SLOW PATCHY WIFI

$

Hi

We live in a two storey house - my parents live downstairs in their own space and we live upstairs in our own space.

Currently we are with 2 degrees - ultra fast fibre plan.

We have a stock standard FRITZ! Box Modem that was supplied by 2 degrees.

It is currently plugged in to the ONT box upstairs in our kitchen area.

We have two kids who between them use PS4, laptop (teenager games or watches tv/movies via laptop).

Upstairs and downstairs we use an iPad and Mac and smart TV and Apple TV each, plus printer and iPhones etc...so lots of devices using Wifi at a time.

We are getting inconsistent slow wifi and my parents have areas downstairs where wifi doesn't work.

Basically I am wanting advice on what to do to improve wifi.

I have been looking at Mesh systems or just getting a better modem.

It would be great to cut down on amount of wires/cables we have to deal with too - in an ideal world it would be great to get rid of modem and just have one thing plugged in to fibre box instead e.g. mesh system.

Anyway, what should we do and how do we fix issues? We are happy to spend what we need to (within reason i.e. up to $500-$600).

Thanks for your advice and help.

Losing upstream speed on ethernet after upgrading from VDSL to UFB / Fibre

Well, this one is pretty strange...

Upgraded from VDSL to fibre. No changes made to my Win10 computer at all as far as it's NIC configuration.

On VDSL I was getting 29mbps upstream from my computer. After switching to fiber I've actually been downgraded to a fixed 100/20 connection, but I ONLY get 13-15mbps upstream. My downstream comes in at 105mbps.

Here's the real head scratcher.....when I test from my iphone which uses 802.11ac, I get exactly the full 20mbps. I've tested this repeatedly for the last day and it is 100% repeatable. iPhone gets 20mbps and Windows desktop and laptop gets 13-15mbps on ethernet.

WiFi Booster - advice needed

My sister recently swapped to Trustpower for internet and they installed the router in the garage at the opposite end of the house where the living areas are. Consequently, they have very poor wifi reception in the living end of the house.

They are wondering whether installing a wifi booster will assist? I have attached a copy of the Trustpower router if this assists. Thanks in advance.

Configuration of ipfire firewall for spark fibre

Hi, I am trying to connect my spark ONT to my ipfire firewall.

I'm configuring the RED interface (the interface that goes to the ont) . I've tagged it to VLAN 10 and entered the PAP credentials as per Sparks guide but I don't know whether the interface IS DHCP or Static.

I have a feeling it's static, but then what IP should I use and what's the gateway?

Anyone have any clues? I found someone post on this forum way back in 2013, they were able to get it working.

Cheers, Alistair

Another patchy WiFi question thread

Greetings

Currently we have a white orcon Genius router/modem thingie, in the middle of the house, but the signal barely reaches the lounge, i do have ethernet cable running under the house to an ethernet switch in the lounge which provides ethernet for a couple of computers etc but of course it doesn't help with the wifi.

i was thinking of using one of these

Apple airport extreme doohickeys as they seem to be small discrete and to do the exact job I want.

Obviously it will get its feed from the ethernet cable, so the WiFi it puts out will that be a separate wifi network or can it be configured to be the same as the existing one, or am I completely missing the point here.

I had previously a few years ago tried to turn an old router into a wifi extender, but for some weird reason some devices would hang on to the signal from that and not go for the signal from the genius router even when down the other end of the house where the old router signal didn't reach.

Network traffic limitations on a second/extender modem-router

$

Hi Guys

So I've just set up a second modem router as an access point to extend the wifi coverage over the property and to give the tennant in the granny flat a stronger signal.

How I set it up is that we have the main modem/router (Netcomm NF4V) connect at the front of the house by the tv so gaming consoles and streaming can all be done over ethernet connections, I then have an ethernet cable run into a powerline adapter and have the second modem/router (ASUS DSL N55U) at the other end of the house connected to another powerline adapter. I have turned DHCP off on the second modem/router, made the SSID and password the same. I've also manually assigned an IP address to the second modem/router, to avoid conflicting with the main modem/router. Additionally I have put network traffic limits on the second modem/router under the QoS in the ASUS, to ensure the usage in the granny flat doesn't interfere with our main use upstairs.

Everything seems to be working fine and from what I've read I've done it right. However on further thought, my question is how do traffic limits work? I.e. Since there is only one network showing, how do I know my devices are not being affected by the limits? Or if they are working at all?

If I have set up the traffic limits wrong or if they will not work in the way I've intended, does anyone have any suggestions for how I can go about this?

Many thanks

The new Edgerouters all include SFP ports.

As a matter of interest, could you skip the ISP provided ONT box and run the fibre straight into your router? Would there be any performance gain?

D-Link DIR-880l: So many problems!

Hi Experts,

I have been using this router for about a year now with high expectations but sadly, everything I try to achieve with it gives me headaches.

Here are my struggles, if you are able to address any of these, I'd be much obliged:

1. Wake on LAN: After some digging, I was able to set it up but to my disappointment it wasn't what I was used to. With my older D-Link router I was able to input my PCs MAC address and wake the computer anywhere anytime even if it was completely turned off. When I switched to 880l, there's no menu or box for MAC addresses related to WOL, I can only input IP address and only wake the computer when it's asleep/hibernating. Any suggestions?

2. PC turns on randomly: Quite regularly when I put the PC to hibernate, after couple seconds it randomly turns back on and it will keep turning back on unless I shut it down completely. Sometimes it's turned off for a day and suddenly turns on for some reason. I suspect this is caused by the Wake On LAN functionality, possibly the router is acting weird and sending the packets to the network? I am not using any other device and I am the only person who has access to it and it just randomly turns on. It's super annoying. What may be causing this?

3. Not able to wake the PC: Not that not being able to turn the PC on from power off state is enough. Sometimes (or even like 40% of the time) the computer is hibernating, and I'm not able to remotely wake it up. I use Teamviewer and normally I just press a button to wake it up. A lot of times it simply doesn't work and then it does and then it doesn't. Whyyy?

4. USB Drive slow: This technological marvel of a router also has capability to connect a USB drive. That's pretty cool, but why is it so slow? It's a USB 3.0 but copying files to and from is very sad. Also when I want to play a 4K movie from the USB drive via router to TV it lags. When I play the movie from USB drive via router to PC it doesn't lag, also when I connect the USB drive directly to the TV it doesn't lag. Why is that? Drive is only USB 2.0

5. Slow Download/Upload: My connection is 100/100Mbps. When I download or upload files the speed is as it should be (thank god) BUT when I want to download something remotely from the above mentioned USB drive connected to the router it is very slow again. Even if the drive is only USB 2.0, I should be getting at least 5 megabytes per sec easy when my upload is that big and download on the receiving device is good too. Is there a fix?

6. The router restarts randomly: I do have a daily restart set up, but this is during the night. For some reason sometimes multiple times a day the router restarts? The network stops working on every device, I cannot connect to the router and after minute or two everything is as it was before. This was happening also before the daily restart was set up. WTF?

7. Unable to connect to router: And finally, also quite often when I try to connect to the good old 192.168.0.1, it just gives me a time out page but the network runs just fine and I'm also getting a nice ping from the IP. I try multiple browsers, I try multiple devices. It just won't load the login page for the router. Even now as I'm writing this appraisal and next day it works just fine. Please help.

I hope you enjoyed this read as I did and hope you have some answers.

Thankssss

WiFi and Ubiquiti questions

WiFi is not something I know a huge deal about, anyone here able answer a question or three ?

I'm looking at getting some wifi into my second dwelling, which is about 500M away and behind a stand of trees/bush .. how feasible would it be to get something like a Ubiquiti Nanostation M2 at the main house, point it at the second dwelling and just cranking the power up to max ? Would a standard phone or laptop then be able to connect to the M2 access point ? Or would they need something equally powerful to reply back ? (or is the M2 sensitive enough to hear the them anyway?)

Basically I'm trying to be cheap and see if I can get away with just a powerful enough accesspoint :-) I know the M2s put out quite a lot of power as the iMac in my house can pick up my friends one who is about 1 or 2 km away with a clear line of sight, not sure if my iMac counld connect though, might ask for the password and try.

New Norton Secure VPN New Zealand server

I personally used Norton Secure VPN when away overseas (because they didn't have a NZ server, so latency would add up in which case I used my own home server when in New Zealand travels/conferences). I've noticed a couple of weeks ago a new NZ server in the list, and here is the official release, so this works pretty well...

Norton by Symantec has launched a New Zealand VPN server for its Norton Secure VPN product, formerly known as Norton WiFi Privacy. The new Auckland based server will give users access to a New Zealand IP address while using the product.

Norton Secure VPN helps users secure private information like passwords, bank details and credit card numbers when using public Wi-Fi on a PC, Mac or mobile device. It also enables people to browse more anonymously and help block tracking for ads. With Norton Secure VPN, New Zealanders' online privacy and anonymity is possible with the creation of a private network from a public internet connection. Norton Secure VPN helps encrypt sensitive data like passwords and credit card numbers and converts it into an unreadable, untraceable form until the information reaches its destination.

'We want New Zealanders to have best in class service and protection, which is why we're investing in the country,' Mark Gorrie said Senior Director, Norton Pacific. 'With the launch of our new Auckland server, Kiwis should experience better performance along with the same great security protection to help keep their personal and financial information safe.'

While the launch of the server is local, it does have global implications, bringing Norton's global VPN location count to 29 with accessible locations such as the US, UK and Australia. More people can pay bills, check email and interact on social networks from cafes, airports or hotels knowing their most sensitive information remains more hidden and protected.

Norton Secure VPN's Auckland server has launched at a critical time as New Zealanders prepare for their summer holiday travel. New Zealanders will be able to have more protection for their personal and financial information from hackers while using public Wi-Fi and use the product to access local music and video content such as TVNZ OnDemand and SkyGo.

'New Zealanders using Norton Secure VPN can have confidence that whether they are checking their bank accounts at the beach or shopping online at an airport, they can do so knowing their information has protection,' added Gorrie.

Hey guys,

Apologies if this is not the right location for this, it was hard to find one where it would fit.

I have noticed in the past few days/weeks that I can't seem to be loading up (most) photos on facebook, either when browsing from the app on my phone (when on wifi) or from my home computer (ethernet to the router). On my phone, it starts working when I disable wifi and switch over to 4G so I have ruled out a phone/app issue.

Everything is pointing at an issue with my router or internet connection. It's not a massive deal but this has me curious and I am wondering if any of you geniuses had any idea about what might be causing this.

Cheers

I would like some suggestions on VPN's Currently I use AStrill and have for several years. It seems to do what I want but figure its time to ask other VPN users what they use.

I need VPN that works on Windows or Android, and one that does not keep records of browsing.

Any suggestions please

ONT Enclosure Dimensions

Hi All

Does anyone know if there is a minimum enclosure dimensions for a fibre ONT?

I have power in an adjacent enclosure but want to put the ONT (in a new build) in a small enclosure (eg: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/ENCDNX1011/Dynamix-HWS-1404V2-14-Network-Enclosure-Recessed-W)

If this big enough, is there minimum clearances or heat issues?

Cheers
