HG659 limitations on connected devices

$

OK, I'll try to explain as best I can, what the problem is (I'm a dinosaur at this stuff, so please go easy)

At work (a Digital Photo Lab) we have Vodafone Fibre and a Huawai HG659 Wifi Modem/Router. We use an implementation of Dropbox to allow customers to connect their smartphones to our Wifi to upload photos for printing. On busy days, we can end up with 80 to 100 people or more doing this during the course of the day, but after about 30 to 40 customers have been in and connected (and left) the WiFi no longer accepts connections. There seems to be only two ways out of this

1. Restart the modem/router

2. Login to the modem and manually delete smartphone connections.

The problem seems to be that the modem/router "hangs on" to connections even after the customer has left. I have personally confirmed this by connecting my smartphone, then leaving the shop and going far enough away so that I am no longer connected, then turning the phone off. When I come back and login to the modem, my phone shows as a live connection even thought it is turned off.

I have both the 2.4 ghz and the 5 ghz enabled, and also have the Guest system enabled on both 2.4 and 5 i.e. there is a choice of four wifi connections that customers can choose from;

shop

shop-5

guest

guest-5

Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

Is there a setting that will allow me to force connections to be dropped after a certain period of time with no activity?

Is there any way to increase the number of connections?

I have a second identical HG659, and I also have a Linksys X3500 (non-fibre). Is there any way that either of these can be used to expand the number of allowed connections?

Which Orbi system to buy

Hi team. First post here so please be nice :)

I am deciding to which Netgear Orbi system to get in the boxing day sales and hoping for some advice.

Question: Does the AC2200 RBK23 version of the Netgear Orbi limit the potential internet speeds that UFB provides.

Situation. 2 story house with Chorus ONT in the attached garage. I have UFB fibre. We have 3 TV's, 3 Chromecasts, 2 mobiles, 2 laptops, 2 Alexa, 1 Vodafone TV STB (requires cabled ethernet).

I am deciding whether to get the RBK23 AC2200 , or RBK50 AC3000 set up. I think both would provide the coverage I need but just wondering about the speeds.

I would prefer to buy the RBK23 for aesthetic reasons (a 2nd satellite also makes it a little easier to connect to wired STB), but I am wondering if the throughput would be a bottleneck for the potential internet speeds that UFB provides.

Thanks in advance for any insight into this.

Has Unotelly reached its 'use by' date

Unotelly VPN has stopped working for me. My account is up to date and I have checked / changed password. No notification on their homepage, left a message and had no response. Cannot access their 'solutions' page or forums - message says "Portal is currently not accessible"

I have been a customer for around five years and their membership services has deteriorated over time - primarily lack of communication. Are other subscribers having a similar experience?

AMV finally released windows 10 vpn client for the Fritzbox but...

But it is in german. No big deal , easy enough to navigate.

And, you have to use the configurator tool thing which generates 2 config files, one of which you import as a new vpn profile into the fritzbox, and another which you import into the windows 10 vpn client.

I couldn't easily make it work with my existing fritzbox vpn profile as the fritzbox does not give you much control over existing vpn profiles.

Fortunately, importing a new vpn profile should not affect the existing vpn profiles in the fritzbox, just use some other email address when the configurator asks for an email.

And, one more bad thing, I couldn't get my netbios name resolution to work (works with the shrewsoft client though), so have to use your lan ip addresses to access local resources. Unless someone figures this out for me :)

Remote access / Setup reccommendations

I'm after some ideas for configuring / re-configuring my home network. Currently things pretty much work as I would like them to, but require a bit of attention now and then to keep the WAF high. Current set-up is as follows:

Workshop:

DV-130 (Bridged) --> Unifi USG --> Unifi SW-8 --> Odroid XU-4, QNAP-TS251 NAS, RPi3 (weewx weather station), Camera NVR, 2 x Cameras, Sonos player, Unifi AP-AC-LR

House (via 1Gb wired link to workshop)

Unifi SW-8 --> 2 x RPi3(1 per TV), Sonos player, 2 x Cameras, Main PC (normally off), Unifi AP-AC-LR, AS-304T NAS.

Cameras and NVR are Unifi and just work ok, no issue there. Odroid is running DietPi with Plex, Sickrage and Transmission - the 2 RPI3's in the house also run a Plex client so content is available. The Asus NAS in the house holds back-ups for the main pc and laptops. This is then backed up to the NAS in the workshop nightly. Not ideal as they are both on the one site, however they are in separate buildings (by around 30m) and on separate power feeds.

Internet access is via ADSL - nothing can be done about that in the foreseeable future unfortunately.

Currently everything is closed to the outside world - I have to be home and on the local network to view the weather station data, camera feeds etc. However next year I'll be working away from home during the week, and only home in the weekends.

What I'd like to be able to do: Log in from a remote location securely (I'm thinking OpenVPN? but what to install it on - Pi / NAS / Odroid / USG?) and have access to everything as if I was sitting on the couch at home - be able to troubleshoot for the wife if she can't watch TV, use SSH to the Odriod, view files in the NAS, check the weather station. I realise I wont be able to stream or watch any content that's stored at home remotely, due to ADSL limitations, but if I need to copy a file in either direction, I'd like to be able to do that. Is there a way though that I can turn on my laptop remotely and it be just as if I'm at home?

I'm happy to hear any ideas, and I'm open to scrapping things I have got, changing software etc if someone has an idea that would make things better than I already have. It's a case of not knowing what I don't know and looking to have something that works smoothly with minimal hassle.

Thanks in advance.

Help me buy a router/mesh system, please

Hi guys, I am on a @Degrees Gigabit connection, currently using the Frtizbox.

I have no complaints about this router except that I feel the wifi quality/speed is not great in some areas of the house.

I have been wanting to look at getting a mesh router but getting a little bit lost. I was tempted by Google Wifi but read since then that they didn't support VLAN tagging which meant that they weren't a great fit for the kind of connection I am on?

What are the downsides of keeping the Fritzbox as the router and using Google Wifi just for the wireless part?

Any other system I should be looking at? $400-500 tops, probably required 2 APs max (~120m2 house all on one level)

Would like to make the most of the Boxing Day sales if possible.

Cheers,

Guillaume

Sense-checking apartment networking setup

Hello :)

I'll be moving to a new apartment in a couple of weeks. I have a pretty good idea of how I should setup my network, but just wanted to sense-check my thoughts.

The apartment has four ethernet points wired back to a comms box in a wardrobe which houses the ONT. I have two routers on hand - a HG659b and an Archer C2.

Currently we are with BigPipe so we use the Archer C2 (we had some problems with the HG659b which was originally my parents). We are thinking of switching to either 2Degrees (because of the sign on discount & reputation on GZ) or Spark (because of the sign-on bonuses and netflix/lightbox etc.) but I understand the Archer C2 wouldn't work with the ONT because of VLAN tagging?

My thoughts are that I would put the HG659b in the comms box and turn wifi off on it and use the four ethernet points on it to wire the rest of the house.

In the lounge I would put the Archer C2 and use it as a wireless access point for phones etc. and as a switch for the TV and gaming consoles. With the other ethernet points, I'd plug my pc into one of them and could expand the network if required with the others with extra access points (I also have an old DSL-N55U and some other old Huawei router I could use)

I know it's generally not recommended to use a router as an access point, but I am just flatting, it's not a huge apartment and I have these on hand anyway.

A few questions:

Does this sound like a reasonable approach?

Would the devices connected via wifi to the access point be on the same network as my PC which is connected to the wall ethernet points?

Any other considerations?

Thanks in advance for your help!

New house networking setup

Hi everyone, Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays first of all.

I am moving into a new 2 storey house in a couple of month, which has UFB. The comms cabinet is inside a linen cupboard upstairs where all 12 Ethernet wall ports terminate back to. There is no patch panel installed due to the size of cabinet but just slacked CAT5E with RJ45 plugs at the end of it.

My proposed setup:

ONT -> ERX -> 2 dumb 8-port switches daisey chained -> 1 Asus router as AP upstairs & 1 Tenda router as AP downstairs both setup with the same SSID as 1 WiFi network.

Any thoughts on this setup? Do you see any issues with stability, reliability and performance of the WiFi network?

Thanks in advance.

Running a network cable under the house

Greetings

One of the rooms in my house currently has no network port, and currently I've got a cable running across the house about 20 metres which gets in the way when vacuuming etc. and is a headache.

I intend on running a cable that goes from the router under the house and into the room. However I have no idea what I need to buy for it, and what tools I need for the job.

At the moment, I'm guessing I'll need to buy:1x 20m CAT6 cable1x RJ45 jack 1x network plate/cover

Tools for the job:electric drillSome sort of crimping tool? (to connect the cable to the RJ45 jack)Alternatively I can pay a data cabler to do the job, but would like to do it myself as a learning experience. Would appreciate some advice.Cheers.

Fibre ONT vs Modem

$

Hi all

I am doing a new build and going to use Ubquiti Products for reliabliity and want to seperate out the compents of the typircal "all in one" box to improve reliablility.

My street has fibre so the lines company (Chorus/Enable) will install an ONT.

I will install a Ubquiti POE Switch, Unifi Pro AP and a USG router.

Do I need the conventional ISP modem (by spark/skinny or whever I choose to go with as a provider)?

A router sorts the internal addresses doesn't it, and the USG has a firewall in it, so what does a modem between the ONT and Router actually do?

On a noraml ASDL connection I understand a modem converts the signal from the phone line into an ethernet, but on fibre doesn't the ONT do that?

The ONT just turns the fibre to ethernet, but do you need a modem in between to configure any ISP specific setting?

Thanks in advance :D

WTB 2U router brackets for rack mounting

$

As the title suggests I'm looking to score a couple of brackets for a 16 port switch I managed to get a hold of so I can mount it on my small rack I have in my closet.

I have a 2U rack mount, 1 will be for the Patch panel, 1 for the switch.

I used to have a few of these brackets, but as yourselves have probably done the "I haven't used these for years why am I still holding onto these?" and promptly thrown them away.Well I did this and now I find myself wanting a couple.

I aquired the switch after work decided they didn't need it and I really wanted to clean up the rats nest of a network I currently have. So after about a year of putting it off I have manaaged to get to a point where I actually need to mount the switch and wouldn't you know it, I can't find the brackets I thought I had.

I tried to go into my local PB Tech but they don't have anything useful.

So has anyone got a couple I could score/buy?

Postage woud obviously be paid for.

Outdoor ethernet

I need a short run of ethernet cable outside - around 3m. I've got a reel of standard indoor cat 6 solid core ethernet, and some outdoor rated conduit. Am I okay using indoor cat 6 outside in conduit, or should I really go buy some externally-rated ethernet?

Is the difference between internal and external ethernet just UV stabilisers in the external sheath, or are the internals different too (maybe tinned or greased strands?).

Unifi USG - way out of my depth!

$

Home wifi was previously provided by two Apple AirPort Extreme wifi APs which are getting pretty long in the tooth, so rather than wait for a fail and emergency replacement, I thought I'd do it ahead of time.

Purchased two Unifi AP-AC-PROs to replace, along with a Cloud Key and the Unifi Security Gateway (USG).

Upgrading firmware on the Cloud Key and the APs and getting them working was relatively straightforward and I have rock solid wifi all over the house and about 50m along the road in both directions.

My original plan was to use the USG to replace the modem Spark provided with my fibre connection. But I've quickly realised I'm massively out of my depth on this part of the plan!

I've ferreted about all over the place and can't find anything that actually gets me through my bottle neck, which is even at the adoption stage of the USG.

Has anyone done this? And if so what tips would you have for someone who has enough knowledge to be dangerous, but not enough to get it working!

Thanks

Andy

Factory Reset DSE XH9948

$

I got a Wireless Router from DSE yesterday, I changed some settings to try and make it work as an extra wireless point on our network. This has now resulted in me not being able to reach the router.

I'll probably take it back after work, but just in case I can fix it, I'd like to try.

Normally what I would have done at that point is done a factory reset and started from scratch again. However according to the book of words, I can't do a factory reset without getting into the web UI!!! A bit odd when that's why i'm doing it.

And the other question is does anyone know if I can actually use it as a 'wireless extender'. What i mean by this is that my DSL router will do all the DHCP stuff, all this does is extend the wireless coverage at the other end of the house. I have a Belkin router at the other end of the house that works fine. Can this act as a wireless AP as well as a router?

Vodafone Ultra hub behind Edgerouter lite with Vodafone voice; can it be configured?

$

Just wanted to check I've explored all of the options with our setup.

We recently ported our VDSL Vodafone plan to Fibre 100 with voice. With the new plan we decided to improve the network hardware and invested in an Edgerouter lite, a UniFi AP AC-Pro and a couple of TP-Link managed switches.

Thanks to the wonderful tutorials on this forum, the Edgerouter setup to connect to the OTN was easy to accomplish and it's ticking over nicely. The UniFi AP is fabulous and gives us great coverage. So the Ultra hub would be kind of redundant right? Well there's the rub - we have a broadband package with voice, and when I connect it up behind the Edgerouter the phone service doesn't work.

From what we've been able to glean from the forums here is that the problem lies in ATA being part of the Ultra hub and the configuration (sip server etc) is not available for the end user to adjust. Were that the case I could offload the settings (I assume) into our Gigaset A580 IP which already gives us offshore outbound VOIP connectivity to the family in Europe.

I've tried packet sniffing the WAN and LAN interfaces on the SIP ports (5060/5061) but the only thing communicating using that protocol is the Gigaset to a sip server in Switzerland. Tried to configure eth2 on the Edgerouter with a VLAN (15) which I also set the Ultra hub WAN interface to. Tries connecting the ultra hub via both LAN and WAN ports but no dice.

Can the Edgerouter be configured to have the Vodafone voice ATA in the ultra hub work or are flogging a dead horse?

If we are then is the best choice to go with a VOIP provider that we can port our 'landline' number to e.g. 2talk and cancel the voice portion of the VF broadband plan (if that's at all possible)?

The simplest solution is of course to just suck it up and have the Ultra hub be the router but then that leaves us with a redundant Edgerouter.

I know we should have done the research but I honestly didn't think the VOIP part of the changeover was going to be the challenge.

Any help much appreciated

Fritzbox 7490 -> Grandstream GWN7000 = Not-so-grand-stream

$

Hello everyone,

Long time observer, first time caller.

I am having some performance issues with my new Grandstream GWN7000 and hoping the collective mind-hive of Geekzone can help me so no-one else is taking the precious mbits of my 2degrees Ultimate Unlimited, sorta-gigabit connection.

Backing up the the truck a little, a couple of 4 weeks back, I decided that as a reward for the FritzBox 7490 for its long standing service and reliablity, I would let it gracefully retire to a box on the shelve. Thanks to the 40% off sale at Go Wifi (h/t to @GarryP) for Black Friday and some of the recommendations from around here, I now own a Grandstream GWN7000 and two GWN 7600s.These suckers seem to be fantastic little units for the price, and I have had no real reliability issues (well, that I didn't cause).

However, I have gone from around 700-900 mbits/sec down with the Fritz to around 300 mbits/sec to now around 100mbits/sec as I sit and write this. I have also spoken to 2degrees Tech Support and the connection is provisioned for Gigabit correctly, so it is somewhere over my side of the light fence.

Here is some nperf tests I prepared earlier (Wifi disabled, cat5e straight to the router, latest Intel 218 NIC drivers):

29th November:

To Today:

I have also tried firmware upgrades for the router (on 1.0.6.28 BETA, n/c between stable and beta), different computers connected to the router, various config settings, but no cake. DPI is not enabled either. Up and down QoS is enabled and set to advertised line speeds (500 up, 900 down); tried turning it off but n/c.

Now, all that said, I have no ACTUAL noticable speed issues (stream everything, multiple devices using WiFi etc), buuuutttttt....... gigabit...... I want it......

Plus, I also want to get out in front of this in case it goes south and I have to formally explain to the Finance committee why the expensive, messy, time consuming solution is working worse than the free, stable, alien-looking one.

I work in IT, so assume that I have missed all the basic steps because I think I am so much better than average user at this and have probably made things worse with my tinkering.

Help?

Also, if anyone has managed to get one of these correctly setup with IPv6, let me know what your config is, as I seem to have got as far as getting a link-local address and that is it.

Thanks in advance, and Happy New Year!

ONT behind TV why?

$

I assume that the TV is connected through the modem to the Internet just like everything else or does the ONT have to go behind the TV because it requires direct connection to the TV now or in some future technology that has yet to be seen in NZ?

I therefore presume that I can run CAT5 from the modem to the TV through the house. Even if the TV requires a direct connection to the ONT I suspect that CAT5 can be run from the TV to the ONT.

Have I got this right?

The plan is to put the ONT close to the server and run a CAT5 cable to a spot behind the TV and connect a multi-port switch so that the Panasonic DVR and TV can both connect to the Internet.

Asus RT-AC68U, can only access router via ethernet connection.

Hi all,

Happy New Year first of all..

I am a bit of a novice when it comes to router set-up, so please be gentle..

I have just connected and set up this router (Asus-RT68U) but I cannot connect to the router itself via wifi, only via ethernet.

Once connected via ethernet, there is no internet access available on the connected laptop.

I can still connect to the Spark Hauwei modem (HG659B) via wifi.

Any help would be appreciated!

Mikrotik - IPV6 DHCP client stuck on status "binding" after restarts

I am running 6.43.8 though this issue has persisted over several previous versions.

On a restart, the IPV6 DHCP client gets stuck on status "binding". I have to manually disable, then enable, and then IPV6 works.

Is there any way to fix this for reliable restarts?

How to get DD-WRT working with NZ Fibre (Specifically Spark)

$

Spent ages trying to figure out how to get my D-Link DIR-895L to connect to the internet running DD-WRT. The solution can be found on a reply on an older forum post, but I missed it so thought to post it here clearer. Is super simple but it is just knowing the startup command to run at the end.

The key settings provided by Spark on their website are:

PPP protocol: PPPoE

PPP username: user@spark.co.nz

PPP password: password

VID (or VLAN): 10

Firstly reset your router to clear any settings on DD-WRT you may have fiddled with.

Secondly, on the setup go to Setup->Basic Setup->WAN Setup and change the mode to PPPoE, and enter the Spark details as shown in the image below.

Thirdly, go Setup->VLAN's. Move the tick in the "W" column down to Link Status 10 and ticked tagged on the bottom. Don't bother about moving the "Assigned To Bridge" setting as it just reverts back to 2.

Fourthly, go to Administration->Commands set the below two lines to be Startup.

nvram set pppoe_wan_ifname=vlan10

nvram commit

Then reboot, wait a minute and you should be good!

I got lost trying to change the VLAN tagging settings in networking but there is no need.

Hope this helps somebody!
