EMF Exposure ... and Children

Looking for some advice on where to find info - preferably not the lunitic fringe of the internet Electro Magentic Frequency Radiation. its given out by electrical cables, electrical equipment, wifi routers, phones, radiating devices and natural sources. When Hand Held Radios (CB's, Walkie Talkies etc) came out people put limits on how many Watts they can broadcast at and gave safety warnings on how close to the antennae you should get etc. Similarly other RF devices. We have heard all the scary stuff ,cancer causing cell phones etc, epidemiological studies of transformers stepping down voltage on power lines and a raft of other things. Two facts I know:1 - People are effected by EMF / RF transmissions. There are some people who cant be in rooms or areas with RF, cell phones, Cell phone towers etc - it gives them headaches, ringing in the ears, sight issues, migraines etc etc. Scientifically proven. If some people are highly affected then ipso facto, we are all affected at some level .2 - When the powers that be give permission for radiating devices like laptop wireless receivers, routers etc, they keep them at a level considered safe for human use. Here is where I am wondering if it goes wrong. Primary Class Rooms under the new Learning environment have 60 kids or so in them. Next door another sixty and often a class at the other end too. Most class rooms have at least one industrial strength wireless router in them. Most kids use laptops, ipds, tablets phones etc. Lets assume that there are 60 laptops or devices working within transmission distance of a kid. The kid is surrounded by these devices 9am-3pm, 6 hours per day. Kids are growing and are more susceptible to EMF, genetic mutation, etc etc. The average kid in a class room is likely to get 30 hours per week of EMF from around sixty devices. That doesn't take into account close contact radiation like laptops on your knees, or the affect of the 5-10 visible routers within transmission distance, smart white boards, smart TVs, etc etc. and the effect of the other classes all within visible transmission distance. What does 60 times the safe limit or legal limit (ie one devices limit) do to people over time? Are there any studies? Where can you get guidelines on what constitutes safe exposure - google hasn't been much help so far. The question occurred to me standing in a cafe car park, with 12 routers visible from local shops and 3-4 cell towers within 100 meters or so of where i was standing. One is safe, but 60?

MikroTik RB260GS + Airport Extreme Base Station + UFB

I've been reading through this guide because I'm interested in getting my Airport Extreme Base Station working on UFB when the installer arrives:http://www.geekzone.co.nz/sbiddle/8744However I just want to double check that firstly the information is still relevant for this model: http://www.gowifi.co.nz/switches/mikrotik-rb260gs-5-port-gigabit-managed-switch-sfp-fibre-port.htmlI assume that I hook up the cable that comes from the ONT box to the ethernet 1 port then have a cable from the second ethernet port to my Airport router and then on the router I set it up for PPPoE authentication then everything will be cool beans?Any additional guidance would be much appreciated.

Getting my Huawei HG659 to route traffic to my Cisco network

Hi there,

I have recently gotten a VDSL connection and a Huawei HG659 modem router. I am wanting to use this router to provide internet to my managed Cisco network however I am having some trouble with setting up the routing.

The LAN ports and WLAN on the Huawei Router are all within the 192.168.1.0 network. My other managed network is 192.168.2.0. The Cisco router is plugged from G0/0 (ip 192.168.1.100) into a LAN port on the Huawei router.

I set up this very config at my work using an ADSL router and setting a static route on so that all traffic for the 192.168.2.0 network was directed to the 192.168.1.100 address (the cisco router address where it would be properly routed from there)

The issue I am having with this Huawei Router is that in the routing rules it makes me select one of the WAN ports (Ethernet WAN or DLS) as the exit interface instead of just sending it to the ip address.

Anyways for some reason I am having trouble getting this to work. If anyone has done this or knows how to configure these blasted Huawei Routers please help.

Thanks in advance.

Is this possible?

Slow upload speed with some devices, on UFB - only over the last couple of days

Hi. We have recently changed to fibre (BigPipe) using a NetComm NF4V router. Had no problem for a couple of weeks but now have a really odd problem. Whilst standard computers (a laptop and two desktops) have no issues with upload (or download) speeds, either over WiFi or ethernet, all Android devices (3 phones and a notepad, over WiFi) get virtually zero upload speed (there is an early spike in the test but it then settles to zero) and many apps stopped working, as a result. There was also a Playstation that had an issue but altering the MTU setting on it fixed that. There are no MTU settings available on any of the Android devices or in the router, that I can find. This only started happening in the last couple of days. I've sent a support request to BigPipe (and will record their response when I get it) but wondered if any of you guys had any ideas? The only thing I've tried so far is to reboot the router. I will also try turning the ONT off and on, over the weekend and maybe reset the router, hoping I remember to backup the configuration first.

Adding More Than 2 Power Line Adapters to a Home Network

I'm looking at using power line adpaters to link a stereo in our kitchen back to the router in our study. Probably looking at something like the TP-Link TL-PA4010 kit. Pretty straight forward I think. However, if in the future, I wanted to connect in some device(s) in another room, does anyone know whether I could just add another adpater in that room and it would just link to the existing adapter connected to the router? Or are these thinks point to point pars?

Hi All,Any help would be appreciated.I've got a NetcommWireless NB604NThis is a standard modem that Trustpower send out for ADSL users.I remember when it first arrived it has two SSID's one for 2.4ghz and one for 5ghzI've reset the modem to factory default settings, but now I can't figure out how to re-enable 5ghz.In the wireless -> advanced settings menu there is an option to choose which wifi band, however 2.4ghz is the only option in the drop down menu.I think there might be another settings that is conflicting, but can't work out what it might be.HELP!!.. Modem Firewall

Hello.

(I looked, but could not find an appropriate forum for "modems" in general)

In a few weeks / month, I want to buy a new modem.

I currently have Netgear DGND3700v2. Its wifi. we have several devices that can connect - main wfi pc, ipads & mobile phones..

Basically, i want a modem that has in-built logging. From google searches, I understand that some modems have firewalls built in.

I want to

:- know (log) which device is logged in / connected

:- how may kb/mb they are using per hour / day

:- possibly their "current" usage at the time.

:- have a history of the device

Will a modem with in-built firewall be able to log these ? (& download the log when the main PC is connected)

Can anyone recommend a good modem/firewall. (or other setup if a modem/firewall is not the right thing)

i do know of PB Tech (the company), has a good range of products.

Is a 2km fixed wireless link practical?

Friend of mine in Australia has really poor internet, but a relative 2km away has great internet. Is it practical to set up a fixed link so they can use the good internet? Is it difficult - alignment of antenna, routing? Is the equipment expensive? Ubiquity is a brand that comes to mind but I have no experience in this area.

Ubiquiti point to multi-point link

Following on from today's earlier thread about a 2km fixed wireless link, I want to do something similar, but with a twist:1) MAIN STATIONUsing Ubiquiti NBE-M5-16 or similar connected to Vodafone RBI wireless router2) SECOND HOUSE ON OUR PROPERTYDistance from main station 100 metres approx, line of sight except for a few Totara leavesUsing Ubiquiti NBE-M5-16 or similarEthernet bridge to main station required with 2.4GHz WiFi router and wired ethernet devices to be connected3) NEIGHBOUR'S HOUSE (off-grid)Distance from main station 1.3km approx, line of sight to pole on hilltop with 140 metre buried ethernet cable to house (lightning protector and earth spike near pole)Using Ubiquiti NBE-M5-16 or similarLinksys WRTP54GP2 VoIP router with 4 LAN ports & 2.4GHz WiFi to be connectedQuestions:a) We are in an isolated country area with no nearby WiFi equipment except our own, all running on 2.4GHz. Is it best to use 5GHz or 2.4GHz for the nano beams given the Totara leaves obstructing the nearby station 100 metres away?I could get the chainsaw out and hack off another branch or two from the Totara tree although would prefer to avoid this. The leaves are pretty sparse anyway.b) Would there be any interference issues between the WiFi routers inside the various houses and the nano beams if a 2.4GHz link was used?c) Because I need point to multi-point rather than a simple point-to-point bridge, is the NBE-M5-16 the best choice?d) Would MikroTik equipment be better?e) How would I go about metering and if necessary controlling the traffic to the neighbour's house if he starts using horrendous quantities of data? Thanks for any suggestions or comments.

Broadcom Tripleplay 150(TP150) Resets when turned off

As above. I have 3 broadcom modems. Triple play 150.I was using netcom modem, but its old and gets pretty hot. No line issues with this modem. Just old.Rang slingshot. They helped me set up my broadcom modem to ADSL settings. All is well up to this point. I can go on the net and surf as usual. But as soon as I turn the modem off at the back or on the wall, then I come back a few hours later, I can't connect to the net and I have to set up the modem again with slingshot. I have done this 10 times so far. They have never come across this issue so they keep sending out modems to me.Why is my modem not saving the settings when I turn it off. I always click apply and save, otherwise I wouldnt be able to connect to the net.I have put this issue forward to slingshot, but it is beyond their expertise. Powerpoint "how to" set up for broadcom modems doesn't include more advanced technical issues, Im guessing.Windows 7 user, laptopThanks

Ethernet Cable Install: Under the house

I've just got my fibre installed and the ONT device is in the extra bedroom however I need an ethernet cable run from there, under the house, to the lounge room because putting the router there would be more centrally located. Is there anyone in the Wellington region able to do such an installation? I'd be happy to provide the necessary cabling. I'm unsure whether this is the correct place to put it.

Video streaming quality drops on certain devices over wifi.

Hello all

I have been experiencing a rather annoying issue. I love netflix, and I love 1080p, but some of my devices won't give me 1080p, in fact it drops to 240p often. So, first here's the details. Xbox one directly to modem, Constant 1080p, Games room soughted. PS4 over wifi is 1080p, lounge is good.

Buts it's the bedroom, where I'm having issues. I have tried a Amazon fire stick, roku stick and most recently Apple TV 3rd Gen. All wifi. Lots of quality drops and sometimes buffering. Have tried 2.4 and 5 frequency. Have tried testing them in the lounge where the PS4 works well with poor results. I know they can work because in my last home using a Asus RT-N56u the Roku worked everywhere at 1080p. The WiFi signal is full according to each device. My modem is a Technicolor TC7210 which I must use because the 100/10mb Vodafone cable plan I'm on only works with this modem. I have used a WiFi booster. I have tried different channels. 2.4 is congested, 5 is not and the modem is literally on the other side of a GIB wall.

I would prefer not to put a hole in the wall to run a cable through.

What have I missed?
