Setting up AP with Fritzbox 7490 as router

$

Hello guys,

I have been attempting to set up my Apple Airport Express to act as an AP but the connection to the Fritzbox from 2degrees constantly disconnects (unstable connection). I have tried swapping the Airport Express with a TP-Link router but the problem persists. As the Fritzbox belongs to the landlord, I am unable to replace it but I do have access to the admin settings. Do advise on what's the best way to solve the issue

Demarcation wiring help

I've searched around and I think I know the answer to this, but would like some clarification if at all possible.

In my demarcation box I have a 4 wire black cable coming into the box. It has brown/yellow/black/white wires inside.

The black/yellow pair are left un-terminated free in the box.

The brown/white pair are hooked up to a couple of white phone cables into the house.

I want to run a new cat6 cable (because I don't have any alternative cable lying around) back to my comms cupboard but don't want to connect the wrong pair at the demarcation box.

I had planned on connecting the cat6 blue/blueWhite pair to the demarcation cable's brown/white and don't think the polarity of the wires matters. eg brown-to-blue or brown-to-blueWhite will work the same. Is this correct?

VDSL modem - non-router or with bridge mode

I'm looking at shifting from cable to xDSL.

If I do, I will need a new modem that will do both ADSL and VDSL (there is a wait for VDSL in Island Bay). I don't want a new router; very happy with what I've got and if I do upgrade I'm looking elsewhere.

Can you even still buy non-router modems? Failing that, what's a reliable (but hopefully cheap) combo unit that definitely definitely has a bridge mode. Definitely.

I'd probably go @bigpipenz if I do end up moving. Does their (your?) $99 Huawei option have a bridge mode? Definitely?

Fritzbox 7390 - IPv6 forwarding not allowed despite forwarded and ports open

Hi

I'm trying to access my Owncloud server from the internet via IPv6. I'm with 2degreesbroadband now and have a static /56 ipv6. The 7390 is connected via IPv6 and all the servers on the network have an IPv6 address that is valid. I can access the owncloud login via IPV6, IPv4 or the hostname so all is good. It's been added to my DNS server too.

I've set the IPv6 forwarding up in the fritzbox, opened port 80 and 443 etc. I've also added the address to my registrar so I can do my hostname properly owncloud.domain.com for example, but when trying to ping the IPv6 address from the internet it won't work. Using the online websites that can ping for you, I get the following:

PING Owncloud server IP(Owncloud server IP) 32 data bytesFrom Router IP Address icmp_seq=0 Destination unreachable: Administratively prohibitedFrom Router IP Address icmp_seq=1 Destination unreachable: Administratively prohibitedFrom Router IP Address icmp_seq=2 Destination unreachable: Administratively prohibitedFrom Router IP Address icmp_seq=3 Destination unreachable: Administratively prohibited

I've removed the Router IP Address from the results but that is what it shows, and it won't get past the router despite the ports being open.

Anyone else using a 7390 and port forwarding IPv6?

Cheers,

Chris

faulty internet comms

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but we have been having problems since January 2015 and are getting desperate. We moved our accounting business home for medical reasons some years ago. In some ways we have been ahead of the curve re "cloud" accounting (but most clients still use desktop software which we support with TeamViewer).

Last January our router died. It was just an entry level machine but we decided to go upmarket a little since we now ran our business from home. We may have had problems before then - but they've been bad since.

We eventually realised that we still had some Cat5 cabling in places, and also had a 10Mb switch. So we replaced those, as we have recently replaced our old VOIP box which expired. We've had Chorus in and they found some "unusual" things (we've only ever had Telecom in) and also reduced our peak performance marginally to minimise problems.

We also had outside help in in the early days - but they were worse than useless.

Mostly we've had our ISP (WXC) monitor and test the system. We've thought of changing ISP's, but we've been with them ever since we upgraded to broadband (remember dial-up days when the internet was smallish?). We've had really good service and we don't think swapping would be good. Plus we haven't found an ISP who would provide their service, including VOIP, and a home phone (for medical emergencies) (not that WXC do that hence we're caught with the stupid double charge that Chorus introduced last year).

The last straw came when a TeamViewer session with a client failed - badly. We rushed out and bought another modem/router. And the problem's vanished. For a fortnight. We swapped back to the original router - and had no major problems for a month or so. Now they're back again. Sometimes a soft reset does the trick - but usually a hard reset is required.

Having tried two different routers we really think the issue is not the router. But we've reached the end of our ability - in fact we reached this a long time ago. So if anybody has any suggestions on what we might be able to do about this I'd reeally appreciate it.

Powerline Ethernet - Compatibility between different devices

Hi

If i have two different powerline ethernet devices (different manufacturers) will they be able to talk to each other, the bumpf that comes with them mentions homeplug av which is a standard i believe, so should they be able to talk to one and other?

Guidance on ceiling mount Wifi AP

Looking for recommendations on a ceiling mount wifi AP for home use. Currently on VF UFB 100/50 with stock Huawei gateway. AP not in best position to cover all areas (and gateway not easily moveable). Believe a single AP in upstairs hallway will do the trick. Ceiling mount required for WAF. Can run ethernet to roof, power difficult but not impossible.Desired:- ceiling mount/ 'smoke alarm' form factor (white) - web gui (no CLI/ mgmt app)- 2.4 + 5Ghz- 802.11g/n (AC optional)- POE preferred- under $200 if possibleUbiquity seems to get a few mentions here but some suggest it's overly complex for residential use case. Appreciate your thoughts...

Cable labelling Techniques - What works best for you?

So, I am going through the process of redoing a lot of the wiring in the place and it has come to my attention my labelling is all messed up.

Sharpie on the cable has warn off in pulling at certain points, Stickers are a PITA and seem to all fall off overtime.

What do you do to label your cables? in particular CAT5+ cables.

How many of you bother with DNSSEC/DNSCrypt? Impact to DNS resolution speed?

I'm currently using it on my router- it was installed by default, but I'm thinking about removing it and seeing if it speeds up DNS resolution.

I'm on fiber (100/20), and even local sites appear to be less snappy than what I would expect.

Is anyone else using dnscrypt or similar? Would be interested to know what your performance is like?

Off the back of that, even whether its worth it- how many people actually use it?

Netcomm NF5 N300 wireless VLAN in bridging mode

$

I'm trying to setup a Netcomm NF5 N300 router as a gigabit switch/wireless AP. I don't want a double NAT as I have another router in front of it.I know the common solution to this is to connect the other router to a LAN port instead of WAN, disable DHCP, give it a static IP and use the other 3 LAN ports, however I really want to use all 4 LAN ports.I've managed to solve this for all the wired ports by assigning all of them to VLAN 1, which I've assigned to the WAN in bridge mode (they were in NAT mode before) and also enabling remote administration for the router so I can still access the settings. Anything I plug into the LAN ports gets an IP address from the upstream subnet and works fine. However, I can't find this option for wireless clients, which are all still connecting through the NAT (I've left NAT and DHCP enabled for the LAN subnet, otherwise they can't connect at all). I've tried telnetting into the router, but that doesn't seem to work. Does anyone know if there's a solution to this or should I just live with my wireless clients being under a second NAT?

Poor WiFi coverage in the house with HG659

Hi guys/gals,

I have a 100/50 connection with Vodafone and use their HG659 RGW which is placed on the second floor of the house, towards the front. The house is about 250 sqm and a bedroom on the ground floor towards the back of the house has very poor (next to none) coverage on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. The area around me is completely covered with WiFi networks so I have exhausted my options in terms of changing channels to optimise range/speed/reduce interference as pretty much every channel is taken up by multiple networks.

I have currently resorted to installing OpenWRT on an old HG556a and running it as a repeater of sorts (it is placed downstairs closer to the ground floor bedroom) which obviously sacrifices throughput (only getting around 20/6).

It is not really possible to move the HG659 to the centre of the house because it requires two jacks at the wall (one for ONT -> RGW and one for RGW VoIP -> patch panel so that all the other jacks in the house can have phones connected) and I can only find single jacks near the centre of the house. Additionally, it will also require some tinkering with the patch panel in the garage which I am not so keen on.

So I believe that essentially only leaves me with two options (please correct me if I'm wrong) - purchase an access point and run CAT5/6 cable to it from the HG659 (which is a bit unsightly) and place it near the centre of the house, or purchase a router which provides better WiFi range, set a static IP on it, disable DHCP, and connect it to the HG659 (and disable WiFi on the HG659).

I am not looking at spending too much ($200-250 max) and from doing some research online I keep seeing TPLink Archer C2/C7/C9 being mentioned. Does anybody have any experience with these or are there better (and affordable) options out there?

Cheers!

Chromecast not working with my Thomson TG585 v8 router

I can't for my life find out why this doesn't work (I'm a newbie).

If I use my Macbook Pro laptop or Samsung Galaxy S5, I CAN'T find the Chromecast, when I go into the Google Cast app and look for devices.

However, I CAN still stream content to the Chromecast.

But if I try to stream from a Samsung Galaxy tablet, I CAN'T stream (this is particular important, as this is the only device, which my mother in law can use to stream for example Netflix to the TV.

I've restarted the router several times, I've pulled Chromecast out of the TV and restarted it.

I've even gone in to the router settings and set the channel to a certain one (and not just let it choose an automatic number).

Then I've read elsewhere that someone else is having the same issues with the same router (Thomson TG585 v8 router).https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chromecast/11iSR0Xl_QQ

Apparently I need to disable the 'AP isolation', but there's no such option to do this, when I log into the router.

I'm starting to believe that I have to buy another router for my mother in law. Although that I can stream from the Macbook Pro or the Galaxy S5, it's still a bit weird that neither of the devices says that they can find the actual Chromecast.

Surely that can't true though...

Any help is much appreciated.

Lenovo laptop vs D-Link "Taipan" 890L router

$

I'm trying to reach a state where my network is stable for weeks or months. I want silent, solid household network infrastructure that doesn't need my time and attention and coaxing to keep it running properly. I thought I was almost there.

Not quite.

For some reason, if my D-Link 890L router is up more than 9 days my daughter's Lenovo laptop (Windows 8.1 - she refuses to upgrade to Windows 10 due to the reduced privacy inherent in it) can no longer connect to the router via Wifi. It not only can't connect, it's actually forgotten it ever was connected...so there is no Wifi AP to "forget". It's gone. When i try to connect, it asks for the wifi password....and fails...

......Just her laptop.

The Macbook Air, HP Chromebook and ASUS laptops have no issues. Nor do the 6-7-odd Android phones / tablets. But for her laptop, my router could run just fine indefinitely.

To rule out the device or Windows, her laptop CAN connect to any OTHER wifi AP, including various phones and the Huawei HG659b (in bridge mode - but 5GHz is left active for management).

The solution?

All I need to do to get her reconnected is re-boot the router. Works every time.

But why? Why just her laptop?

I thought maybe it was the PC name so I changed it. Nope.

I thought it might be the MAC address, so I plugged in an ASUS USB wifi adaptor....and it can't connect either. Hmmm.

I thought maybe it was the DHCP, so I reserved her IP address as static. At the same time I dialed the DHCP lease time way back from 7 days (10080 minutes) to 24 hours (1440).

She also keeps her laptop on hibernation mode rather than shutting it down. I've wondered if this is corrupting her system's view of its DHCP lease time....but I don't know.

Anyway.....after changing the lease time, the router required a reboot....and she was then able to get back on, as before.

But what happens in 9 days? *Sigh*. I may buy her a new laptop.

Fibre shower than VDSL

I live in Auckland and don't have access to Fibre yet. My (Vodafone) VDSL speed is approx 42 Mbps

A relative in Rotorua just upgraded to Fibre. I was expecting to see amazing speeds.....

but over the last 24 hours it's been approx 28 Mbps.

Why is her Fibre 34% slower than my VDSL?

Sky distribution around the house over ethernet

$

I've been looking around to see if a product like this exists and haven't found anything so far. What i'm looking for is essentially a HDHomerun with an HDMI input. So to distribute Sky around the house you would connect your Sky box to this mystery box (bonus points if it has HDMI passthrough so I can keep my sky box connected to the TV in the lounge), and the mystery box would create a stream which you could watch on say any DLNA device or computer attached to your network.

Does anyone know of a product like this? Or alternatively, how do distribute Sky around to multiple screens in your house? My place is wired up with Cat6, so i'm looking for a solution that uses that. Cheers.

IP route disappears after a few seconds of traffic

I am currently setting up a small vpn tunnel, which is then connecting 2 LAN's together, for nothing other than helping me understand routing, forwarding, etc.

I have turned an ubuntu host on the destination network into the VPN host and router.

Net1: 172.16.1.0/24

VPN: 192.168.0.0/24

Net2: 192.168.15.0/24

on the VPN host, I have added a route using this command to allow traffic to travel back to Net1;

ip route add 172.16.1.0/24 dev ppp0

I can then ping, browse, do whatever I want across the two LAN's.

So I open VMWare to connect to ESXi- it connects to the server, then stops responding. When I go to check the VPN host, I see that the route that I added just above has disappeared. This happens all the time and I'm really getting to the end of my tether with it - I cannot work out for the life of me why it disappears.

To be clear; I am not rebooting when this happens - it disappears mid transport of traffic.

Anyone else experienced this issue?

EDIT: here is the route print.

Can anyone recommend fibre modems: ASUS RT-AC66U, Netcomm NF8AC or something else?

$

Short and sweet; got set up with BigPipe fibre recently (excellent service btw) and just quickly bought the cheepo Archer C2 since I hadn't put much time into investigating for a new fibre modem.

The ethernet has been fine (aside from the odd connection hitches while online gaming etc) but the wireless has started to get frustrating.

I've always found that $200-$300 is a sweet spot for good modems and the ASUS RT-AC66U and Netcomm NF8AC fall in that region, but I would spend a bit more if someone could highly recommend something else. An important thing for me is stable performance for online gaming.

I had a very positive experience with ASUS N55U on my previous DSL connection which is why I am leaning towards RT-AC66U.

Thanks for your time!

Extending signal around the house. powerline adapter?

So current situation is that I have a wireless modem upstairs in my house but our floor is concrete so it's hard to get a food signal downstairs. Ive tried placing a wifi extender downstairs to extend the signal but that isnt working too well. Would my next best thing be to have a Powerline network adapter connected to my modem upstairs then place another Powerline network adapter downstairs to where I want it so I can connect my device via ethernet cable or wifi through the adapter? How reliable would the ethernet or wifi be through the adapter and what adapters should I be looking at getting (reliable and good performance)?

Resolve IP to HOSTNAME kinda

$

Ok, so I'll try explain this as best I can with the limited time I have to make this post...

I have a CommandFusion LAN Bridge that sends me push notifications for various events, but it only supports entering an IP for a push service. Recently Growl changed the way they do things and they require you to use their host-name which is api.prowlapp.com. If I resolve that into their IP using nslookup, I get: 54.225.207.133, 23.21.249.174 and 23.23.183.201. If I use any of those in the IP field, nothing gets pushed. After talking to their support they said we must use the host-name api.prowlapp.com, and that the resolved IPs will change from time to time.

So... Is there any way either in my router (Draytek Vigor 2120) or an app I could run on my Windows Server to allow me to resolve an IP I put in my LAN Bridge to prowls host-name api.prowlapp.com?

Cheers for any help and hope it makes some sense

Cannot see wifi access

$

I recently used a tablet running a wifi analyser to help my daughter get the best wifi signal around her home. Discovered that 2 or 3 neighbours were using the same channel as her router, so we changed the channel for less overlap/interference, and obtained better signal strength.

However, when I ran my analyser app again, I could no longer see her network ... even after a reboot and several minutes her network would not show on my tablet.

The network was still perfectly available on her laptop, and using the smart TV simply required a network search reset to find the amended channel.

Can anyone suggest why I couldn't see the network on my laptop after the channel change?
