Unbrick the Huawei HG659 router
OK so you just loaded new firmware into your HG659 and now it's a brick (only the power light works) !Don't freak ! Here are the steps to unbrick it: 1.Make sure you have a copy of the last known firmware before you bricked it. I.e whatever was running last from Vodafone or Spark. 2.Set-up your PC Ethernet port to a static IP as below:IP 192.168.1.10Subnet 255.255.255.0Gateway 192.168.1.1 3.Plug a network cable into LAN1 on the HG659 and of course on the PC.4.Fire up browser and have it ready on address 192.168.1.1 (i.e ready to hit enter)5.You now need to enter Rescue mode on the HG659:Turn off the power on the side of the HG659Push and hold the RESET button the HG659Power up the HG659, do not let go of RESETYou will see LAN 1 flash a few timesAfter about 5-10 seconds hit enter on ChromeA screen will come up to load firmwareChoose the last known firmware that worked and uploadWait about 1-2 minutes, you will see LAN1 flashing as it uploads, then WAN flash, then LAN1-4 all flashAfter all this you should be all good to go !6.Set your PC Ethernet port back to DHCP and do ipconfig in CMD prompt and you should see the router assign you an IP and Gateway7.Your now back, have fun

Can't SSH onto Gargoyle Router Anymore
I've got a Netgear router flashed with Gargoyle and have been successfully connecting onto it with both the web interface and via SSH, using PuTTY and WinSCP. However, when I tried to connect today it's not connecting. The web access is still fine, but WinSCP and PuTTY are failing. I turned on logging in WinSCP and here's what it output:2016-05-01 14:17:56.692 Opening session as main channel. 2016-05-01 14:17:56.693 Opened main channel. 2016-05-01 14:17:56.727 Started a shell/command. 2016-05-01 14:17:56.739 --------------------------------------------------------------------------. 2016-05-01 14:17:56.739 Using SCP protocol.. 2016-05-01 14:17:56.740 Doing startup conversation with host.. 2016-05-01 14:17:56.794 Skipping host startup message (if any).> 2016-05-01 14:17:56.794 echo "WinSCP: this is end-of-file:0". 2016-05-01 14:17:56.794 Server sent command exit status 1. 2016-05-01 14:17:56.794 Disconnected: All channels closed* 2016-05-01 14:17:56.861 (EFatal) **Connection has been unexpectedly closed.** Server sent command exit status 1.* 2016-05-01 14:17:56.861 Error skipping startup message. Your shell is probably incompatible with the application (BASH is recommended). It last connected fine about a week ago. In that time, I've tweaked a couple of the QoS and DHCP settings, but nothing that should affect this. And as I say, the web interface connection is working fine.Anyone have an ideas around this please?

Changing router
I have changed internet provider from Vfone to Spark and have realised that my previous Vfone router gave better wireless distance than my new Spark router. What do I need to change on the Vfone router to enable it to work on Spark? Ihave read the Spark help page on using 3rd party routers but that was not very helpful to me. Thanks for your help.

Network Internet traffic monitoring?
Hi all.I'm a layman, and I have tried a seach, to be bamboozled by the results.Basicaly we are on 40GB fibre. We used to be on 40GB adsl, and we had plenty spare, to the point where our carryover was up to 200GB at one point. We are hitting full allocation usage now within about 2 weeks, without any significant alteration in actual usage.I am thinking there must be some method of installing an internet connection monitor somehow, that would allow us to view where all the data usage is coming from.I recently hid our Wifi SSID, customised the name and changed the password. What I can't figure out is how I could hook up *something/anything* to monitor traffic through the fibre connection, when 2 phones, 2 laptops are on wifi and streaming pc on lan attached to the wifi router, then into the lan of the fibre router. Secondly, my partner is working over dropbox, not sure if this is a red flag for high usage? Any help appreciated!

Huawei HG659 unable to bypass DNS issue
Hi, I was given an HG659 a few days ago and have set it up using ADSL. All working well except for DNS. I use OpenDNS DNS servers, so that internet is safe for my kids. A couple of computers on my home network have custom DNS settings to allow adults to bypass the OpenDNS filtering. However for some reason the computers with custom DNS settings still get DNS resolution from OpenDNS and it is blocking sites need/want to access.Under Internet > Internet Settings > internet_adsl I have ticked "Static DNS" and have entered servers as 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.Under Home Network > LAN Interface > DHCP server I have ticked "Gateway acts as the DNS proxy". I have tried clearing DNS cache using CCleaner, restarting router, unticking Gateway acts as the DNS proxy, deleting network adapters and adding again, but they still get DNS from OpenDNS. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Wiring advice: to daisy chain or not?
Hi GZ,I had a scoping visit from a tech who will be doing some internal cable work for my house before UFB arrives. The arrangement is as follows:1. Set up a wall-mounted rack downstairs in a spare rumpus room for the ONT, Router (Edgerouter lite), Switch (TP Link 24-port POE SG2424P switch), and my 2 NAS boxes.2. Run CAT6 cabling underneath, over the roof or around the outside (as appropriate) and terminate to RJ45 plates in a few different locations around the house, including a few places where I'll put a Wireless AP. So the setup is ONT --> ER Lite --> 24-port PoE Switch --> Various RJ45 plates in the house.Simple enough, but one location, our entertainment centre area, is a big hive of demand. I have about eight devices that I'd like to wire with ethernet (I'm in a pretty densely crowded wifi area so would like to try and avoid wifi connections for these devices) at that location. Running eight cables and setting up eight faceplates feels like it's a bit much, and so I was considering a simpler option of say one or two RJ45 jacks in the TV area, and a second, smaller, switch for all the devices in the entertainment area. But switch daisy-chaining has a terrible reputation, and I can appreciate why that is. The question is, even if I'm happy to run a bunch of cables up there, is there a less ugly solution than 8 RJ45 jacks coming out of the wall that I could use? ThanksV

WiFi Problem
Hi.Wife has been having issues with the WiFi for the past 4 days, but I have been overseas, so upon my return this morning I had a look at it and this is what my WiFi signal is doing.I'm assuming my wifi router needs to be replaced? It is a TP-Link TD-W8960N?I've tried powering down the router for about 5 minutes and restarted it, but no change.

Detailed logging of network traffic?
I'm the head tenant of a flat and thus everything is in my name, including the internet.Something that's been inflating my paranoia for a while now is what happens if one of my flatmates turns out to be a fiend and is doing illegal things with reckless abandon on my connection? It's going to look pretty bad considering my name is the only one tied to the account. (I'll point out that this is just paranoiac contingency planning, as far as I'm aware my flatmates are perfectly normal and decent people). Not being an expert in copyright or illegal material law, I assume it would be enough to produce a log showing that the MAC Address belonging to flatmate 'X' was the one to connect to 'Y' (the unfavourable content).Ideally I want something along the lines of Draytek's Smart Monitor, but that requires me buying a Raspberry Pi/bare-bones PC to run the software, and a separate Wireless AP as it only logs traffic through the LAN ports. I'm currently running a Draytek Vigor 2760VN by the way.As this solution involves the purchase of hundreds of dollars worth of equipment anyway, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a more elegant solution, such as a router with this functionality inbuilt or attainable through flashing of open-source router firmware?

Modern alternatives to DC++?
Hey guys, Just wondering about finding a good sharing software for my flat of 6 people - waaay back in the day we used DC++ and I'm just wondering if anything better has come along in the last 10 years? I've never had much luck having windows shares work without issues and I can't be bothered constantly troubleshooting sharing issues the way I feel like windows shares always seem to do.Thanks, and sorry for the dumb question!

Was OS totally destroyed by hacker? (wi-fi button frozen in OFF position)
Tablet: Dell Venue Pro OS: Windows 8Age: One year old BUT hardly ever used, device sits on shelf collecting dustSymptom: Wi-fi button - unable to switch wi-fi button on - can't connect to the Internet - wi-fi button frozen in OFF position all the time.Steps taken:I formatted the OS not once but approximately 4 or 5 times in order to try and cure problem. Why 4 or 5 times? Because the wi-fi button is always frozen in the OFF position no matter how many times I format Windows 8.In between each format I did not go on the Internet because the w-fi button never works. The OS comes with Windows Defender already installed, a Windows based anti-virus program.I scanned the OS and nothing malicious comes up. Because the problem prevents me from going online, I am unable to update Windows Defender.I went to the device manager to inspect the network card, and nothing looked unusual. My opinion, as a layperson:Because the tablet was formatted approximately 4-5 times in order to solve the problem, because a tablet needs to be able to connect to the Internet wirelessly, and because the wi-fi button is always frozen in the OFF position,it would appear a hacker rendered the tablet's operating system completely useless, would you agree? The problem has not been solved, the symptom persists, if you have a cure please suggest one. The tablet will play a crucial part in my life when I relocate and move long distance, when I bed down in any one Airbnb and begin the hunt for a new place to live in an unknown land. As it stands now, because the wi-fi button is frozen, the virtually new tablet is of no use.

Where to buy short (10-15cm) cat6 patch leads
I've finally installed my new cabinet and I'm now after some short (10-15cm) cat6 patch leads. I usually buy the Dynamix cables from Cables Direct or PBTech but the shortest they seem to do is 25cm. Does anyone know where I can buy shorter cables (preferably in NZ)?

OpenWrt wan interface not connecting
Hi, I've set up OpenWrt several times in the past so I'm not a 'complete' noob, although still a noob. I have OpenWrt running perfectly on my WR1043ND, and I have set up OpenWrt on a HG556a Hardware version B in the past. Right now I'm setting up OpenWrt on several HG556a Hardware version C to help out some other people. I have the switch set with VLAN 1 as 0 1 2 5t (ports 0, 1 & 2 are my LAN ports these work perfectly, 5 is internal) VLAN 2 as 3 5t (port 3 being reconfigured as my WAN port) All following the OpenWrt website for the HG556a, https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/huawei/hg556a#switch_ports_for_vlans I overrode the MAC address for my wan interface to be one higher than the lan interface. Wifi is bridged to the lan interface. But I have two issues 1) Wifi is has its MAC address the same as the MAC address of the wan interface. 2) the wan interface does not connect. I have SSHed in to the router and run 'ifup wan'. In Luci I have pressed the 'connect' button next to the wan interface. But still no luck. The Status--> Overview screen still has the WAN as not connected. My own HG556a hardware version B, is not set up now so I cannot copy the configuration file over. Can anyone help? Happy to send over whatever configuration screen dumps you require. Yes I've searched through the OpenWrt forums, where this problem was manually solved with 'ifup wan', although the wan interface would not automatically connect and had to be manually connected every time the router was rebooted.

router that can use WiFi as a "WAN" interface
Just wondering - does anyone know of a router that could use a 4G wifi hotspot to share an ethernet connection with a LAN of 100-base-T ethernet workstations, is that ever done? I know there are 3G/4G enabled WiFi routers but just checking if there's such a low cost device where the source of the bandwidth is not an ethernet connection but a WiFi connection. Thanks, John

Powerline adapters not working after upgrade to fibre
HiAfter many months of waiting to get fibre (Spark) installed and running, it finally happened the other week - prior to this I had Vodafone VDSL with predominately a wireless setup. Trying to eke out some more speed (for my boys' gaming and Sky) I put in some powerline adapters (TP-LINK TL-PA4010P) which connected flawlessly. Since my fibre upgrade they no longer work. When these worked they had all the three status indicators lit, which are power, internet/network activity and connection status. They now show only the power and connection status.Has anyone else experienced or know of this and if so is there a solution / workaround I could try? Thanks in advance.Rich
